Experience.I have more than 45 years legal and business experience, having served as partner in several law firms, as vice president of and legal counsel to the multi-billion dollar investment advisor of a group of publicly held mutual funds and as president and CEO of a mid size Chicago real estate brokerage, management and development company. A highly experienced real estate developer, I have developed shopping centers, office buildings, mixed use buildings and literally thousands of condominium units.
I served as president of a mid sized condominium association for more than ten years. Because of my varied experience, I bring a highly practical and pragmatic point of view to legal representation, having acted both as client and attorney in many complex business, condominium association and real estate transactions. I am highly sensitive to the issues and pressures being faced by and the practical concerns you are facing, while being highly proficient in handling the technicalities of legal transactions.
Education.I earned an undergraduate degree in accounting from Northwestern University Kellog School of Management. After qualifying as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), I attended the University of Chicago College of Law And Graduate School of Business where I received a Juris Doctor degree in Law and a Master of Business Administration, with a concentration in Investment Finance. I am licensed to practice in Illinois and have been admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the United states Tax Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and before the Supreme Court of the United States.
My Practice. I practice in Chicago and maintain a convenient neighborhood office on the North Side of the City. I am a general business and real estate law practitioner, focused on business and real estate transactional matters as well as condominium law and estate planning and administration. I have represented condominium associations and advised clients as to condominium law since 1970.
I bring an educational background including the most highly respected rated law and business schools in the country to the informal environment of a small local firm. This gives my clients the benefit of direct access to sophisticated and highly experienced representation but without the overhead, much higher fees and bureaucracies of large and downtown law firms.
I take my own calls; so when you call, you will not be "filtered" through a receptionist, secretary or assistant. I make it a point of being absolutely responsive to my clients and of trying to return every call the same day, no matter how busy I may be at the time.
I am a member of the Chicago and Illinois State Bar Associations, the Association of Condominium, Townhouse and Homeowner's Associations as well as the Chicago Association and National Association of Realtors. I serve on the Real Estate Law Committee and The Condominium Law Subcommittee of the Chicago Bar Association.
Give me a Call. If my approach and background seem to suit your legal needs, give me a call ((773) 394-6400, ext 1) or e-mail me ([email protected]). I'll be happy to set up a free, no obligation, telephone or office consultation. If I don't feel I have the experience to best represent you with your matter, I'll try to refer you to another attorney who does.

Mary Riordan, Real estate Attorney on Jul 2, 2010
Relationship: Worked together on matter
Barry is very smart, understands the development and real estate business and is a very tough negotiator. He has worked on both the development and legal side of real estate so he has a broad perspective when dealing with issues. I represented Barry on some very tough City of Chicago deals. Even though I was his attorney, I learned about the business and became a better lawyer as a result of having worked with him.
