Reprimand means an attorney did something wrong but may still practice law. The State gives the lawyer a public reprimand in hopes that he or she will not repeat the behavior.
Michael’s comment: “One of the reasons I received a “Leader in the Law” award from the Wisconsin Law Journal in 2013 is my philosophy that the only reason the legal profession exists is for the benefit of our clients and the public, including criticism of the legal profession when to do so benefits the public. Illinois lawyer regulators brought no proceeding against me. They merely copied Wisconsin’s reprimand. Two justices said I did nothing wrong. For further information, see the Wisconsin entry.”

Michael’s comment: “In 2003, when an attorney went to prison for defrauding some 200 of his personal injury clients, I was the only lawyer to publicaly criticize lawyer regulators for allowing him to have his license the entire time he was in prison. His lawyers pressured lawyer regulators to charge me with unprofessional conduct. 2 of the 3 charges were dismissed and the court came within one vote of dismissing all 3.”
