I hired Jacob Mathis as my divorce attorney and paid him a $4,000 retainer. His communication was minimal and unclear, often forcing me to follow up multiple times just to get basic answers. I explained my job search and plans to attend school using my GI Bill, but the judge still imputed me an income of $90,000—more than I’ve ever earned. Mathis didn’t challenge this or advocate for me. I was awarded 50% of the gym equipment, but Mathis didn’t ensure the other party provided proof of purchase, which made dividing it fairly difficult. He also allowed the court to state I hadn’t completed the required parenting class, even though I had sent him the certificate. Later, he asked for an additional $2,000 just to fix the child support issue. In my opinion, all if not most lawyers in the downtown Clarksville area are buddy-buddy, and they just want a quick and easy buck. The ineptitude Jacob Mathis demonstrated in the courtroom continues to haunt my family. After providing no pushback on the District Attorney's offer, Jacob attempted to explain that "the defendants expectations were unrealistic. This is lawyer speak for, "Opps, I got my butt handed to me by the DA." ... Jacob Mathis in court displays the intensity of a tampon. And that's giving him way too much credit. The main criminal element in a courtroom is his total lack of guts and ability.

Jacob Mathis is the most unskilled criminal attorney I have ever had the displeasure to know. He is totally lost in criminal court. At best he displays the acumen of a high functioning autistic. His negotiating skills are pathetic as he proved by giving in to every whim of the District Attorney, and ...outright lying to the defendant about the relevant details and disposition of his case. Inside the courtroom I watched as the DA whispered something to Mr. Mathis and they retreated to the hallway. When he came back inside the courtroom the plea deal he had previously described to the defendant was modified so that the sentence suddenly became consecutive to the one he is presently serving. Mr. Mathis charged more than $3000 to sell out the defendant to the state. This defendant must now serve his entire sentence before even beginning to serve the sentence that the DA and Jacob Mathis collaborated on. Mr. Mathis was provided multiple letters of reference for the defendant that he failed to even bring up to the judge. He argued nothing on the defendant's behalf, seemingly developing a case of aphasia (that's inability to communicate) as he stood in the courtroom. I would not recommend this lawyer to anyone. A public defender would be far better than this "legal pretender." All hat and no cattle.

Mr Mathis was able to work with the prosecuting attorney to render a very positive outcome for my 18 year old daughter who found herself in legal trouble in KY. I hired this attorney to represent my Son in a child custody case. He required $3500 up front. I was very involved sending several data based emails, flew down to meet with him and participated in a conference call prior to the trial. Mr. Mathis is all talk , poorly prepared and just sat there du...ring the trial. He did not ask my Son's ex-fiance one question and was poorly prepared to take on the onslaught from her attack attorney At the end, no follow up call or letter, just sent the order that really did nothing more for my Son or us. We had used his partner prior and we were reasonably pleased, Mr. Mathis was a DISASTER for us !! What a waste of time and $$$$ All talk, Mr. professional but NO PERFORMANCE no gravitas when it counted most.
