Insult to injury

Here is the thoughtful review I wished I had available before I “hired” this woman. I had a landlord falsely accuse me of non-payment of rent, stalk and harass me for context. Your options with Debi Rumph: 1) a strategy session for $2,500 or 2) full representation for $5,000. Don't worry, these price...s WILL change, but not in your favor!! I opted for the strategy session, although I could not get any elaboration on what this entails. Normally, this is what another lawyer would call a consultation. There is absolutely no strategy. She listens to you explain your case. And with that comes a lot of confusion where she blames her “staff” for how they loaded your information into her software system. She offers a host of “free” services, and will email spam you with her tenant’s clinic, but you will NOT be eligible for this! . When you question why you’ve been quoted such a high price, she will tell you your case is complex. This is code for ‘she has to do some work’. But, I was assured that if my landlord did not return my security deposit, she will do that for free when in reality, she won’t do anything at all. I will give her the credit of editing my “Amended Answers and Defenses” and “Counterclaim”. I was as happy as I was going to ever get and if she was honest, that’s where my story would have ended, but she wasn’t honest. If you move forward, you will see that your strategy session is actually a DIY - with assistance. You’ll find this out when she tells you she’s rendered all the service you will get for your $2,500! She never sets an expectation. You will find yourself constantly asking for clarity, email after email, in which she tells you she’s on vacation. I lost count on the times I had to ask for clarity. The only constant is terrible communication and enough frustration that you’re ready to just give her the money to be done with the added pain she causes. This is called throwing good money after bad. Don’t do it. When I went down that path, I gave her enough rope by asking her to come back with a couple different quotes for a couple different scenarios. This is the part where she should have strategized, but after a week (this time she was busy training a new staff person) she came back with one line. Pay me $5,500 more for a total of $8,000. She claimed she had to be there in person but would have to hire local counsel. After 3+ months, I was just told in 3 separate emails that I would not be able to recover damages without her but also that I can't recover damages with her - yes, it's that's bad. I'm not asking for clarity again. It’s a bait and switch operation. She never tells you what to expect, but you can expect to pay more money to find out. First sign of a bad landlord, get out. The only thing worse than a bad landlord is a bad lawyer who admittedly cannot communicate and is trying to take advantage of you and the situation. Listen to your gut because it's talking to you the same way as mine spoke to me. Use the money to get yourself out of the nightmare you're in and do not hire this woman to help you. It's a lose-lose situation. And if you're confused at how her prices just kept increasing with no rhyme or reason, join the club! When I finally asked if the attorney was the one responding because of endless emails that just create more confusion she responded that she doesn't have all day to read emails, but for the low price of $8,500 and counting...you can tho! Ms. Rumph, or Ms. McRae (she goes by both) I will be filing a complaint with the Bar as well the AG's office. Govern yourself accordingly.

She had ideas about damages I could seek that I hadn't thought of, and I felt confident in her strategy and abilities so paid her $1500. Unfortunately years later, she has been wholly ineffective and just repeatedly expressed her lack of confidence in her ability to litigate the case successfully. She played no role in getting the collection attempt by my old property manager off my credit report-I did that on my own. She had no idea I wasn't on a month to month lease despite my furnishing her a copy of the annual lease. She asked me to find an expert to determine the value of my vintage wardrobe destroyed by the mold which was so severe the floor had rotted through in my apartment. This was after I sent actual receipts, which she then asked me to put on a spreadsheet for her. She had no idea how I could find such a person, but insisted it was necessary. Attorney Rumph also said after the fact that neither her fees nor the other attorneys fees were likely to be recoverable. She did nothing at all to help and just gave reason after reason why she couldn't or shouldn't move forward. It really seemed like she doesn't believe she can successfully argue on behalf of tenants. I wouldn't waste money on what turns out to be a consultation.

Ms. Spears, as I informed you in a letter this afternoon, I not only got you the relief that you sought, but I offered you additional free repeated, emergency services. It was in those free services that I advised you as to the weaknesses in your case. I did not make your facts or your evidence. From this review, it appears as if you are dissatisfied with every attorney and landlord that you come into contact with. It all appears to all spiral into conflict. I am sorry that I cannot fix that. I also think that your review contains misstatements of fact. As I have repeatedly told you, I hope that life gets better for you, and I wish you well.

Professional, Knowledgeable and Caring

From the start and all the way through to the end Debi explained everything in terms we could understand. She is reachable and always willing to answer our questions. Debi ROCKS!

Debi is incredibly knowledgeable about very specific statutes. She is experienced, she is empathetic, and at the same time hard-core and determined. She didn't back down when faced with unexpected opposition but came right back with facts, clarity, and respectful disagreement. She went above and be...yond, in my opinion, for my case. She kept me informed, gave solid advice, and maintained an essential integrity throughout the entire time I have known her. She has a brilliant mind, and a wicked pen, I love her.
