Biography
I'm a retired Marine Corps infantry officer, judge advocate and military judge who practices criminal defense law in state and federal courts out of my law firm located in the high moutains of northwestern North Carolina. I still consult on and handle military criminal defense cases, as well. My primary focus is on felonies involving drug offenses, sex offenses, assaultive behavior offenses, fraud-based offenses, and white collar crime offenses. The great majority of my cases are in North Carolina (with 85 percent of my efforts devoted to federal matters), though I have and am still willing to travel to other states and overseas to handle criminal matters.

Replied last February 14, 2018This is a review posted not by "Adam," my federal client, but by his roommate's father, who I refused to provide discovery to after my client was sentenced in federal court in Raleigh, NC. At the time of the posting of this adverse review, my former client was in federal custody and did not have access to the internet to make this post. His roommate was also sent to prison because of the drugs/firearms found in their apartment and as a result of my client's cooperation against him. Therefore, when the roommate's father asked for discovery from my client's case (that would have shown my client's cooperation against his son--the roommate), I refused to turn in over. He got very upset and later he posted this under my client's name. The fact that my client received such a light sentence in a drug growing/weapon possession case reflects the true quality of my legal services. I always cover with every client their right to address the court and what they are going to say in advance of sentencing, so I know what I need to say at sentencing.

Replied last February 14, 2018This review by an angry mother of a federal appointed client is not accurate whatsoever. I refused to continue talking to her in mid-case because of her abusive language and lack of appreciation for the facts and reality in general, and I thereafter would only deal directly with her son, my client. This upset her. I advised her that if she wanted an attorney to talk to her, she could hire one. She did the weekend before sentencing, and I gave him all of my pertinent file. I appeared at the sentencing and was excused by the Court, and the new attorney thanked me after the sentencing because he said he used my sentencing memo and the judge went with my recommendations. A PSR is a sealed court document and I would never mail it to someone and I did not in this case. Her son could have received a life sentence and received substantially less as a result of my efforts. You cannot hold against a client his abusive mother.
