Biography
I am a graduate of Georgetown University Law School and focus on federal and state criminal defense and asset forfeiture matters. I also represent licensed professionals facing disciplinary actions by their licensing boards, as well as public officials facing government ethics investigations and other political inquiries.
At Georgetown Law, I was selected to join Georgetown’s Moot Court team and won Best Brief in a regional competition. Before going to Georgetown Law, I attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where I was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honors society and graduated in the top 3% of my class.
I have developed substantial experience in complex litigation. For example, after a three week federal criminal jury trial in which their client was charged with embezzlement, false statements and tax evasion, Joe Cheshire and I litigated numerous post-trial motions and won a new trial for our client. In another case, I obtained the release of over $2 million of seized client assets in a federal asset forfeiture matter related to a long-running federal bribery prosecution. My state court work has included representing people charged with tax evasion cases, drug offenses and murder.
I have represented two members of the North Carolina House of Representatives; a former gubernatorial candidate; a Superior Court Judge; the chairman of a county school board; and numerous bankers, doctors, lawyers, accountants and real estate agents.
I have been a featured speaker for the North Carolina Advocates for Justice lContinuing Education Program and am an active member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
