A Personable and Compassionate Immigration Attorney
McCathern Painter is a bilingual immigration attorney at our High Point office. McCathern brings a great deal of first-hand and practical experience in helping families deal with a variety of immigration issues. She has experience in cases involving defensive asylum, cancellation of removal, special immigrant juvenile status, U Visa, waivers of inadmissibility, consular processing, adjustments of status, citizenship, travel authorizations, employment visas, DACA, and family petitions. She looks forward to listening to your immigration needs and advising you on your options.
McCathern has always been interested in the justice system. She recalls how she and her father, a high school history teacher, would spend time talking about famous cases, the history of the U.S. Constitution, etc. McCathern’s father always wanted to be a lawyer but with his learning disability, and having grown up in the 80s, it meant he had to choose a different dream. As a result, when McCathern’s passion for law, justice, and history flourished, she wanted to live this dream for both of them.
Before joining the Dummit Fradin immigration team, McCathern gained experience working in the non-profit sector of immigration law, providing deportation defense, status changes, and relief for clients seeking asylum. McCathern also worked at Elon Law’s Humanitarian Immigration Law Clinic and Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy’s Immigrant Justice Project. In addition, McCathern worked in Elon Law’s Constitutional Law Appellate Advocacy Clinic. There, she worked alongside her colleagues to write amicus curiae briefs to the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.
Through her experience in working with families facing various immigration issues, she’s come to find that many people don’t spend much time thinking about their immigration status. They have full lives, often have families, jobs, and myriad other responsibilities. Because of this, their status gets put on the backburner.
“By talking to an attorney, you’re able to know if your options are time sensitive, if you need to make any lifestyle changes prior to applying for an immigration benefit, or if you have active options that could help you right then. Talking to an immigration attorney is the best way to assure your future security in the United States.”
Since joining Dummit Fradin, McCathern has had the pleasure of working with many deserving clients. One notable case involved a client facing deportation. Our client had been in the U.S. for over twenty years. He and his wife shared four U.S. Citizen children, one of whom has Down Syndrome and several health conditions. McCathern wrote the brief in support of canceling any removal proceedings against him. She compiled evidence, interviewed the client and his family for their declarations, and prepared them for taking the stand at trial.
The particular judge that heard the case has a less than 4% approval rating across the board, but our immigration team helped him see the humanity in this case and make the only correct choice. Despite multiple decades of unlawful presence in the United States, the Judge decided that this client deserved to stay in this country. Now, the client will have his green card in a few short years and can live in peace with his family.

Cat talked me through what needed to happen to try and bring them all to the US for an extended visit. I had very positive results with the Firm before, s...
