Since 1999, I have practiced solely in the area of family law. In the context of a typical divorce case, I will address matters of property division, assignment of debts, determination of spousal support, determination of custody and visitation, and determination of child support.
Prior
to entering private practice in Virginia, I was an
active duty Judge Advocate in the United States Marine Corps for seven
years. While on active duty, I spent a year and a half as a
court-martial defense counsel where I dealt with a wide range of cases
including child and spousal abuse as well as sex crimes. I was the
Officer in Charge of the legal assistance office at Camp Lejeune. While
at legal assistance, I dealt with a variety of family law issues
including divorce, support, wills and estate planning, and consumer
protection.
I then became the Staff Judge Advocate for the 26th Marine
Expeditionary Unit. During our deployment from 1995 to 1996, I provided advice to the command as well as individual Marines and
sailors on a variety of criminal and civil matters to include custody
of children and support of family members. I was later assigned to the
Naval Justice School in Newport, Rhode Island to instruct judge
advocates and paralegals on civil law matters of family law and estate
planning.
While at the Naval Justice School, I participated in a
military-to-military training program sponsored by the State Department
that took me to a variety of countries including Bangladesh, Uganda,
Ghana, Togo, Cameroon, Bolivia and Paraguay. After leaving activity
duty, I maintained an affiliation with the United States
Marine Corps Reserve. My latest assignment was as an appellate defense
counsel at the Navy-Marine Corps Court of Military Appeals. I began my military career in 1985 as an enlisted infantryman.
I have used my background and experience in accounting to
analyze complex financial matters arising in the course of divorce.
In addition to my formal education, I am also a graduate of the Pennsylvania Gunsmith School and Washington School of Photography.

I had a very negative experience with Mr. Miller as my divorce attorney. He is a smooth talker when you first meet him, but in court he was unprepared, disinterested, and needlessly argumentative. The sole weapon in his arsenal appears to be constant objections, which only served to annoy the judge...
“cb” came to Cole Miller PLLC through an employee benefits program, CLC. He received a free initial consultation and discounted rates thereafter. When he came to me, his wife had already docketed a hearing seeking relief to his detriment. I was able to avoid that preliminary hearing for him. Shortly thereafter, I was able to get him the custody and visitation he wanted by agreement, without a trial. On the matters of property and support that did go to trial, the judge used portions of my argument in her ruling. During his case, I sent “cb” monthly invoices that he ignored. I had to eventually file a collections action. To avoid the collections suit, he sought a fee arbitration hearing. The arbitration panel ruled in my favor and awarded me more than I offered him to settle the balance due. “cb” then threatened he would write adverse reviews on social media sites if I proceeded with collection on the balance due. He got the representation that the other reviews describe. His complaints about representation did not arise until I asked to be paid for my services.
