Patrick Erney Maher

About a year ago I was involved in a hit and run, this was my first offense. I called a couple laywers before reaching out to pat and got no response. then I called pat and he responded right away. So that same phone call he told me exactly what to do without hesitation. Pat told me to do community service first right off the bat, then go to Columbia drug and alchohol clinic to get evaluated to see if I had problems with alchohol or drugs. After I did those steps I attended a seminar at the university of Maryland hospital at the shock trauma center on drunk driving and how serious and life threatening it is. Pat knew the steps for me to go any further in this process and I listened to him, did what he told me to do and when it was time for court he had me ready to go in there and stand in front of a judge. While in court I was extremely nervous and scared, but knowing that Pat was standing next to me, made me feel very safe and comfortable. Pat is very knowledgeable and passionate of his practice and the law. Having him by my side is and was one of the best decisions I've ever made. He saved my career of being a truck driver and no points on my license. I also wanted to say something on a side note when I had first called pat and finished the phone call I got a call back from a lawyer I had tried to reach out too. We talked about my conviction and what happened, but I kindly and politely told him I have a lawyer. He kindly asked who he was and I said his name is Pat Maher. When this unfortunate event occurred, I was very upset and from our intial phone call, Pat showed great client care by calming me down, and getting me focused on what was ahead. Patrick was referred to me by another attorney; that attorney was a trusted friend of mine, but did not practice DUI law. That in-its-self was an endorsement and a compliment. Upon contacting Patrick, I recognized that he was a good listener and clearly demonstrated subject matter expertise. As you likely know, there are two major parts for "keeping or loosing" your license - and being fined ... and/ or going to jail. Patrick's MVA administrative skills preserved my driving privilege unencumbered (no car installed breathalyzer); and at trial, he was a cogent, respectful, and a successful advocate. And I must add, he did a good job managing his client; that is, although I objected to certain police officer testimony, Patrick calmly dissuaded me from commenting/ testifying. Apparently, the judge was persuaded, in part, by Patrick's case law references/ defense and, generally, his presentation. Whereby, the judge decided that "my particular situation" (DUI charge) did not constitute driving under the influence. Postscript - As you likely know, the probable cause regarding all DUI arrest/charges can vary significantly. In my case, when I was confronted, I was not operating/ driving my vehicle, but I was in the driver's seat; and I was on private property, asleep. However, having access to the car's keys (they were in the ignition), the confronting officer's position was that intoxication and "access to the car's keys" constituted DUI. However, it was winter and a cold night, and to keep warm, Patrick explained that I had been cycling the engine/ heater. Fortunately for me, we had a discerning judge that was also "a good listener."

I hired Mr. Maher after interviewing many other lawyers. He was the only lawyer that wanted to take time out of his day and give his insight on the case, even before i hired him! Patrick went above and beyond for me. This was my first time dealing with any legal proceedings and Pat helped in every step of the process. Pat helped to have us win our case in a not-guilty plea for DUI. We were offered a plea deal and other options, but Pat believed he could win based on the evidence to get a lesser sentence or win outright and he was right. Mr. Maher came to our rescue when our family found ourselves encountering the court system for the very first time when our son was charged with three serious crimes related to a traffic misunderstanding in a Maryland parking lot. The charges involved potential jail time and major fines. Mr. Mayer patiently explained the laws and the process, and conducted thorough research. From the very beginning, he expressed compassion (a real contrast with other attorneys we interviewed) and make clear throughout that he was a firm advocate for our son’s interests. In the end, prosecutors agreed that the police had filed egregious charges and presented a joint proposal to the judge for a very minor fine related to our son’s status as a permit holder (not yet a licensed driver). This was my fourth contact with the law regarding alcohol related offenses (third DUI charge).
