Biography
Michael Elbert is the lead attorney at the Elbert Law Firm. His primary practice areas are criminal defense, DWI and personal injury litigation.
After receiving his Bachelor's degree from the University at Buffalo, Michael attended St John's University School of Law on an academic scholarship. He began his career at the Bronx County District Attorney's office where he prosecuted thousands of cases ranging from misdemeanors to homicide.
Since entering private practice in 2001, Michael has distinguished himself throughout the area as a skilled trial lawyer, winning acquittals for clients on a wide array of charges such as, murder, robbery, burglary, weapons, narcotics, vehicular crimes, obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, possession of stolen property, harassment and disorderly conduct. Michael's trial success and experience with area prosecutors and judges has given him the knowledge, experience and credibility necessary to achieve the best possible results for his clients.
Michael has been recognized as one of the best criminal attorneys in New York by being selected to the New York Times Super Lawyers publication annually since 2014. Michael was also recognized as one of he top ten criminal attorneys in New York by the National Association of Criminal Attorneys and nationally ranked among the top 100 DWI attorneys by the National Advocacy for DUI Defense. Additionally, rates Michael as a "superb" attorney for criminal defense, DWI and personal injury matters and in 2013, 2016 and 2017, awarded him their "Clients' Choice Award".
Michael has lectured for the New York State Bar Association and Iona College and recently authored, "A Consideration of the Repugnant Verdict" (Nassau Lawyer, 2012). Additionally, Michael is an adjunct professor at Hofstra Law School where he teaches in the Foundational Lawyering Skills program.
Michael is a Past President of the Nassau County Criminal Courts Bar Association (2017-2018) and is also a member of the Suffolk County Bar Association.
