Scott is the managing attorney and founding principal of Lanin Law P.C. He began his legal career in the late 1980's while in law school and passed the N.Y. Bar Exam in 1989 at the young age of 23 (he skipped the 8th grade). Scott gained experience at several top firms for 10 years before founding his own firm. Lanin Law P.C. traces its roots back to 1999. The firm has moved over the years from the Lincoln Building, One Grand Central Place, NY, NY (across from Grand Central Station), to 1065 Avenue of the Americas, NY, NY (across from Bryant Park), and now to 505 Eighth Avenue, NY, NY (one block from Penn Station), always maintaining a Midtown Manhattan presence under Scott’s leadership. Scott has extensive experience representing individuals and businesses, including lenders and borrowers, mortgagees and mortgagors, corporations, and trustees in commercial (business and real estate) litigation and in cases involving debt collection, replevin, asset recovery, orders of seizure (equipment and vehicle leases), mortgage foreclosure and receivership, contract and real estate disputes, Chapters 7, 13, and 11 bankruptcy cases, and a wide variety of creditor rights and bankruptcy matters, including adversary proceedings and motions. Scott also gained extensive experience in the areas of real estate and co-ops as the First Vice President of the Board of Directors of 1266 Apartment Corporation, the largest co-op in New Jersey, where he was responsible for 6 hi-rise buildings, 32 acres of property and over 114 employees.
Scott teaches other attorneys how to litigate. He stays current by constantly reading and studying the law and by always striving to improve. He participates in at least 24 hours of continuing legal education every two years. He has taught national online CLE courses to other attorneys on Commercial Litigation and on New York Foreclosure Law.
Scott is approved as a law student mentor at six local law schools: Brooklyn Law School, Cardozo Law School, New York Law School, St. John's University School of Law, Touro Law School, and Hofstra Law School. Over the years, he has trained many law students who are now practicing attorneys.
In April 2020, during the Covid-19 crisis, Scott remained active and was a Judge for the Touro Law School Moot Court oral arguments held by Zoom.
On a personal note, Scott grew up in New York and attended only NY schools, graduating in the top of his class from the NYU Stern School of Business and St. John's University School of Law. He began college at NYU at the age of 16. He is married to Lisa Lanin, and is the proud father of Samantha and Jessica. Scott is a dog lover and also lives with Riley and Maisy, a Norwich Terrier and a Morkie.
Scott is The Blackbelt Litigator (SM). He also holds an internationally certified 4th Degree Black Belt in ITF TaeKwon-Do and a 2d Degree Black Belt in Karate. He is a certified Taekwon-Do instructor with more 3 decades of teaching experience. He is currently preparing to test for his 5th degree Black Belt. He has been training in the traditional martial arts and kickboxing since 1984 and teaching since 1987 and finds martial arts philosophy and concepts useful in his law practice. He has trained with his daughters who both hold certified First Degree Black Belts themselves in ITF Taekwon-Do.
Scott is also an accomplished musician and plays lead guitar in his rock band. He is an avid fan of the Mets, Jets, and Knicks but will accept Yankees, Giants, and Nets fans as clients. He has also been a member of the International Diabetic Athletes Association, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, and the American Diabetes Association, having been a juvenile diabetic since age 12. He was the Athletic Director of the New York Diabetes Association summer camp in upstate New York and has been a public speaker on diabetes and exercise. He has never allowed diabetes to prevent him from doing anything. He uses his own experience in overcoming adversity to help his clients meet the challenges they face.
