Assisting in my debt collectiion settlement

I hired Barry Miller to assist me in a credit card debt settlement. I paid him $1500 upfront. Before he had all the information, he led me to believe he could settle it for $10K. Months later, it was settled for over $13K. At times I felt he was working more towards the collector's interest as he... kept trying to get me to pay them a large sum of money upfront or obtain a bank loan. He knew I was on a fixed income and did not have this type of money at my disposal. That is what makes me rate him the way that I did.

The notes in my file reflect the fact that I would "try" to settle the matter for $10K as the claim by the creditor exceeded $26K. This is what was communicated to the client. With the amount of the claim In this case, I thought that would be a fair offer. I am very clear with my clients that I cannot and do not guarantee an outcome (this language is in my legal fee agreement) but that, with 25+ years of experience in assisting clients with managing their debt, I strive to resolve claims against them to their satisfaction and only with their agreement. In this case, I believed that, if we could make the creditor an offer with a larger down payment, that could help to obtain a better long-term settlement. In the end, the claim was settled to the satisfaction of my client for the sum of $13K with payments over a two year period.

Finally Settled

Before I hired Mr. Miller, my credit card indebtments were being settled by a debt relief fund firm outside of the state of New Jersey. Aproximately two years ago: I decided that I wanted to get out of my credit card indebtments as soon as I possibly could. Because I knew that my time in the work Fo...rce was winding down, and I really wanted to quit working two jobs. While I was a part of the debt relief fund I was only able to settle one of my credit card accounts- across approximately two years. So, several months ago I decided that I needed to make a change in order to get the last two accounts settled, and save money. Every month I had to deposit 310.00 into the fund and 84.00 went towards attorney fees. I was losing money; waiting for the relief fund attorneys to negotiate my indebtments. And also, one of the credit card accounts was for a great sum, and I did not know how I would fare in the settlement. So, after many telephone conversations with other debt counselors I decided to get myself a lawyer (a specialist), someone who would negotiate the remaining two credit card accounts, for a one time fee, and as soon as possible. So, I turned to the telephone book, and Mr. Barry Miller Esq. was listed as an attorney in many of the counties here in New Jersey. I had one session with him to discuss my financial situation, and a one time fee to pay for his abrogating sevices. It was only about two month later, November and December of 2014 when the remaining two of my credit card indebtments were settled. The power of a lawyer.
