I had been wrongfully denied unemployment benefits after being laid off from my full time employment in January 2012. I thought this was a simple misunderstanding and tried contacting the State Unemployment office on my own. No one that I spoke to at the unemployment office seemed to care about my ...situation and told me the only option I had was to appeal the decision. I appealed the decision on my own, again thinking this was a simple misunderstanding and a quick phone conversation with a competent decision-maker would clear things up. Mind you, this process takes several months. When I finally spoke to an appeals examiner on the phone, I found her to be rude, not willing to listen, and treated me like a prosecutor questioning a defendant. I had been made to feel like dirt for trying to claim my benefits after working full time for the last 20+ years without any previous unemployment claim. Eventually, the appeals examiner denied my claim based on her perversion of the facts. I decided to hire an attorney. Omar's name came up while I was asking for referrals from my friends. My friends did not steer me wrong. Omar was very understanding, cool and calm. He exuded a quiet confidence that immediately put me at ease. He seemed to take my case personally but handled himself in a very professional manner at all times. Although the process was tedious and took a ridiculous amount of time for someone who has no income (no fault of my attorney), I eventually won my appeal 12 months after I was initially laid off.
