My daughter was in an 18-month cosmetology program when I moved to Boston from Michigan. She was having a hard time adjusting to her mother being so far away, and took a break from school… They told her she had to formally withdraw in order to do this, so she did. She went back a while later and afte...r being back at school for a couple of months, and only 6 weeks away from graduating, the school closed its doors and filed for bankruptcy. She looked into transferring her credits to another program and was in process of doing so when she suffered an accident at home while washing dishes, and severed the nerve in her pinky finger, requiring surgery. She would no longer be able to become a cosmetologist due to the damage, so she applied for student loan discharge through the government. The federal government, however, approved only a partial loan discharge, stating that because she had withdrawn from the school for a period of time, her earlier loans would have to be repaid. Even though she lives in Michigan, I contacted Adam and set up an appointment with him while she was in town for a visit. He went through all of her paperwork, and showed us exactly how to file an appeal to the decision with the government, as well as suggested verbiage for the letter we would send in with it. Nearly two years later, the appeal has worked and the rest of her student loans have been fully discharged! If we wouldn’t have contacted Adam and sought his counsel, she would be in $13,500 worth of debt for a degree she is unable to pursue any longer, and $3,500 worth of debt for her medical deductible.
