Ever since the last summer of 2012, when i was arrested for DUI with BAC over 0.12, Matthew has always stood by my side no matter what. I was really nervous and extremely anxious about the outcome, but he always did his best to let me calm and always on time to keep me up to date. My BAC was so high, a really tough one to battle, but Matthew refused to settle for anything less than "dismiss," and much to my delight, he finally made it happen. This tough-ass lawyer fought it to the end for me going all those extra miles. I cannot count how many times he had to be at court just to work it all out with the judge, not to mention DMV officials. Yes, it was my first offense, and when I think back the day I was arrested, it still gives me a shiver and again and again I say to myself, "do not ever drink and drive again, not ever again!" I will keep this promise with myself until the day I die, and that is a swear.

Matthew is quite a big guy, and when you first see him, you may get a bit intimidated by his aura (as I did), but when I sat down with him, started explaining my case to him.. I was already feeling like I am not alone not just because he said everything was going to be fine, but more importantly because he was genuinely listening to what I had to say. Yeah, sure I was mumbling throughout the first meeting out of extreme trauma, mental fear and anxiety, and as I was walking out of Matthew's office, I knew my mind was at ease, and miraculously I was able to go on with my life. And, for that I am sincerely grateful to my Attorney Matthew J Ruff. He successfully persuaded the judge to allow me the second chance and the chance to appreciate what "driving privilege" really means.

If you have been arrested for DUI in California, You need a good DUI Lawyer, not just any good one, but a tough one. Any lawyer can be good in terms of brain, but I am sure, not every lawyer is as tough and caring as my attorney, Matthew J Ruff.

I found matthew for a friend who needed a lawyer for a DUI. Not being from the area, it was hard to find someone who was experienced and honest. His work on the case put us both at ease right from the start, he was always updating us and telling us the next step, when the case was over it was beyond our original expectations. I definitely can recommend him to anyone looking for a lawyer they can trust.

I am writing this review knowing that most people have nevr had to hire a lawyer same as me. I hired Matthew for a criminal case . At first I was intimidated when looking for a lawyer, then I came across Matthew's website. I called him and he spoke with me immediately, not days later like some attorneys, he was not judgemental or demeaning and he took the time to listen and get a grasp of my case, I knew he was the right layer for me. When he went to Court all of the other attorneys came up to him and the Judge seemed to know that he was an ethical guy. Matthew fought my case tirelessy and kept me informed all the way, not ever did he try to get me to take a plea deal or twist my arm for a pleabargain. In the end all charges were dismissed and he earned my trust as a lawyer I can refer all my friends and family to. I know lawyers have a bad reputation as dishonest and underhanded, but not Mr. Ruff, he's not out to simply make a buck, he cares that caring shines thru in the way he speaks to you and handles the case.

I hired Attorney Matthew Ruff in February, 2010 to handle a bogus assault case filed by a disgruntled ex-girlfriend who was also a coworker. Because of my prior criminal record from 20 years ago, the DA filed the case under the three strikes statute and was attempting to bury me with a Criminal Threats charge as well. Mr. Ruff told me in the initial interview that he was very familiar with the judge handling my case and that she was very fair.
Once Mr. Ruff came aboard, he repeatedly ignored my evidence submissions which showed the alleged victim was faking injuries in order to collect disability insurance and take months off work. Additionally, the alleged victim was running a business while she was "recuperating" from her injuries. When presented with this evidence, Mr. Ruff indicated that he wouldn't bring it up during the trial because he didn't want to appear to be picking on a female victim and he didn't want to get on the judge's bad side.
During the trial, the alleged victim perjured herself several times and I had given Mr. Ruff the legal proof that she was lying. Mr. Ruff failed to raise an objection during the trial when the alleged victim made mention of my prior criminal record(which inflamed the jury, creating bias against me) and his indifference was noted by the judge, who refused to grant a mistrial due to Mr. Ruff timidity and lack of pursuit of the facts of the case.

Mr. Ruff showed very limited legal acumen and clearly did a poor job of litigating my case. Furthermore, while the Criminal Threats charge ended in a jury deadlock(10-2) in my favor, I was convicted of an Assault I did not commit and, despite being on bail for 18 months with no incidents, was immediately remanded to custody.

Once in custody, I was shocked to hear Mr. Ruff disclose that he did not know the judge in my case and this was the first case he ever litigated in front of her. He then told me that I should just call my job($91K annually as an IT programmer) and resign, but maybe the judge would give me probations(hardly likely, considering her bias).

Two weeks later I was sentenced to the upper term of 4 years in state custody, Mr. Ruff was nonexistent once again in the courtroom and timidly offered a feeble argument to the now frothing-at-the-mouth judge. This display of legal cowardice cost me $16,000 and my $91K annual job, as well as two years of my life!

I urge any and everyone to avoid dealing with this individual as he was deceitful and indifferent to me in my time of need for legal expertise. A complaint is being filed with the California state bar association and I'm also filing for legal fee arbitration to recover the money I paid to him. Hope this factual information helps someone before the same fate befalls them.

If you believe in yourself then believe in Matthew Ruff.He is one of the most trustworthy,valuable and efficient attorney who knows what he is doing.

I was up a creek without a paddle, I was facing felony domestic violence charges by my ex wife for something I had no part in, hell I was gone the who day and came home to find the cops at my door accusing me of beating my wife! Like an idiot I tried to talk my way out of it by telling them I've been at work since 4AM, and got home at 9PM. They arrested me anyway, when I got bailed out of jail I immediately started calling around to other attorneys and all of them said the same thing "lets hit a plea bargain" I told every one of them I wasn't going to plead guilty to something I didn't do, and everyone of them said "sorry but its your word versus hers and in California the woman always wins no matter what, it doesn't matter if you did it or not shes accusing you and that's all it takes". Frustrated I called one my friends and asked him if he knew a good attorney he immediately mentioned Ruff. He said it at best by telling me to call him ASAP and he will get the charges dropped, so I did and told him what happened, he told me not to worry and to come by his office ASAP to fill out some paperwork because I had to be arrained in 2 days, I went to his office with a 5K retainer cheque and signed the power of attorney paperwork. He told me to keep my nose clean and wait for him to call, surprisingly the next day Ruff called me and told me I didn't have to go to be arrained because he got the charges dropped and full pardon from the courts. I am a middle-aged man, who never had faced this type of trouble before, Mr. Ruff confidently guided me through an experience I that could have permanently ruined the rest of my life. I was arrested for domestic violence charges under section 273.5 and section 243.e.1. After spending 3 days in jail, I walked out of the LA county jail, I was totally perplexed and didn’t know what to do. As soon as I walked out, i hired a lawyer to prove my innocence immediately. This lawyer promised me that he would get the charges dismissed immediately. However, on the date of pre-trial instead of forcing for a speedy trial, he bought more time (and without telling me that he is going to get more time). On the same day, by god’s grace I found Matthew Ruff. I told him what had happened, and then I hired him immediately. He took me to the Torrance court and filed papers for change of attorney, and also requested the court for a speedy trial instead of buying time as sought by my previous attorney.

The prosecution gave few plea bargains until the date of trial but Matt never tried to convince me to accept a plea bargain (many attorneys would try to do that as it saves time for them), and stood by me through the trial and tribulations, as he truly believed that I was innocent. On the first day of the trial, Matt convinced the judge to dismiss 273.5 charges even before the trial started. As a result, the trial was set for section 243.e.1. My spouse and my sister in law was well educated (Ivy league), and came up with lot of coherent stories to prove that I was a wife batterer. Also they tried to use the culture (we hail from south asia) to their benefit and tried to convince the jury that in a south asian culture it is common for the man to exercise control and physically abuse the woman. The prosecution had 2 very young and energetic lawyers working day and night and coming up with more and more concocted evidences provided by my wife and sister in law to prove me guilty. However, Matt was never perturbed. He demonstrated his confidence throughout the trial. If I was convicted, it would have resulted in me being deported out of the country as I am working in this country on H1b visa.

No words could describe Matt’s skill and the knowledge of the law. Matt proved to the jury that I was innocent and ensured the case got dismissed. I am truly impressed with the work of Matt, and I would not hesitate to recommend Matt in a heartbeat. Good luck!

If you find yourself in the unfortunate position with a DUI charge I highly recommend Matthew for your defense. After my arrest and failure to submit to a breathalyzer test I was ready to give up and take my punishment to get it over with. My wife insisted I get a lawyer and we met with three attorneys before selecting Matthew. We selected Matthew mainly because he specialized in DUI cases and he gave us a comfortable feeling.

Matthew took over our case and met with the courts and DMV allowing us to continue our plans for a four mouth long RV trip. Matthew continued to reassure us and was successful in getting the DUI reduced to Wreck less Driving and, through numerous meetings with the DMV, convinced the case worker to set aside the mandatory one year license removal. The outcome far exceeded my expectations.

I was arrested for a DUI while traveling here from England. Being a simple English bloke I did not know where to turn for help because I didn't want to go to jail and I could not do any types of schools or such since I would be going back to England. I attend school in northern California and was on my way home to southern California after finals when I was pulled over for exceeding 100 mph. As a student, my biggest concerns were getting my license suspended, missing school, traveling back to so. California to attend court and what it was ultimately going to cost me (fines, travels costs, increased insurance, etc.) Attorney Matthew Ruff represented me in my case and took care of everything so that I could just focus on school and not have to worry about a thing. He was able to get my case dismissed, saving me a lot of time, money and stress. He was very professional, easy to contact, reassuring, responsive and I cannot thank him enough.

Came across as very professional and approachable over the phone, however, his follow up was poor and he says one thing and then during the next conversation, he changes it, says something else, and becomes rude when you question him about it. He actually hung up on me and when I called him back about it, he stated he "thought" we were finished with the call.

In my case, he failed to follow through with two commitments he agreed to and he became aggravated and rude when he was questioned about it. Hey, I'm the client looking to you for answers and you're supposed to make me feel better and at ease. This guy stressed me out until I finally decided to hire somebody else, who really did what he said he was going to do.
