TAD NELSON & ASSOCIATES
Tad Nelson
Founder, Tad Nelson & Associates
Both Sides of the Lake
For 35 years, Tad Nelson has represented clients on both sides of Clear Lake. From the south shore, he built one of Southeast Texas's most battle-tested trial practices. From the north shore came a steady stream of Harris County families, professionals, and business owners willing to make the drive for the lawyer who wins in the courtroom.
After three decades of crossing the water to stand beside them, Tad has finally been persuaded to make the move himself. Tad Nelson & Associates is coming to the north side of the lake to serve better Harris County clients who have trusted the firm for years. Same lawyer. Same team. Same standards. Now closer to home.
Learning the Game from the Other Side
Tad was licensed to practice law in Texas in 1991. A year later, he joined the Galveston County District Attorney's Office under District Attorney Mike Guarino and prosecuted felony cases in the 10th Judicial District Court. Over three years, he tried 39 jury cases and lost only one.
Those years taught him exactly how the State builds a case: how prosecutors think, what they lean on, and where their arguments are weakest. He has used that knowledge for his clients ever since.
Building a Firm Around One Mission
On June 1, 1995, Tad opened Tad Nelson & Associates with a single mission: fight for people when the stakes are highest. A year later, in 1996, he earned Board Certification in Criminal Law from the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. The credential requires demonstrated trial experience, peer review, continuing education, and a rigorous examination, and only a small share of Texas lawyers ever earn it. Tad has held it for 30 years.
To Tad, certification was a starting line, not a finish line. The real measure of the firm has always been what happens when a client walks into the courtroom with everything on the line.
A Trial Lawyer in an Era of Plea Deals
Most criminal cases today end in a plea bargain. Tad built his reputation by being ready to try the ones that shouldn't. He has tried more than 400 jury trials. Between late 1998 and early 2000, he won 18 straight "not guilty" verdicts in high-stakes felony cases, a run few trial lawyers anywhere can match.
Prosecutors know when a defense lawyer will actually pick a jury. That reputation changes how cases are negotiated, and it is one of the most valuable things Tad brings to every client he represents.
The Case That Defined a Mission
Early in his career, Tad saw that the forensic science used to convict people was not always as reliable as juries were told. He challenged a state breath-test technical supervisor's practices with discovery motions and subpoenas, and he kept pressing even under the threat of contempt.
In 2008, prosecutors arrested that supervisor. In 2009 she was convicted, and more than 1,200 DWI cases were overturned. The experience cemented Tad's mission: master the science himself, and never again let a client's freedom depend on evidence nobody in the courtroom was equipped to question.
Answering Science with Science
Between 2010 and 2014, Tad made five trips to Chicago and spent two and a half years in hands-on scientific training in Dr. Edward Polite's working laboratory. In February 2014, the American Chemical Society designated him a Lawyer-Scientist. In December 2016, he earned a Master of Science in Forensic Toxicology from the University of Florida.
When the government puts its chemists and toxicologists on the stand to talk about blood alcohol, drug analysis, or lab procedures, Tad doesn't have to guess what they will say. He has done the science. He knows what sound analysis looks like, and he knows exactly where to look when it isn't.
A Firm Built to His Standard
Tad has built a team that holds itself to his standard. Managing Partner Amber Spurlock, a former Judge Advocate General in the United States Marine Corps, joined the firm eight years ago. She brings military discipline and precision to a practice that covers criminal law, family law, juvenile law, military law, and criminal appeals. Like Tad, she is an American Chemical Society Lawyer-Scientist (2015) and a Texas Super Lawyer, selected for the sixth consecutive year in 2026. Two Lawyer-Scientists leading the same firm is something almost no other defense practice in Texas can offer.
Behind the scenes, Shelly Darnell keeps the operation running with the same precision the firm brings to the courtroom. Great representation depends on great support, and Shelly delivers it every day.
Today the firm handles the full range of criminal defense, including felonies and misdemeanors, DWI, drug charges, violent crimes, and federal cases. It also handles divorce, child custody, and personal injury, and every practice area gets the same preparation that has defined the firm since 1995.
Recognized by Peers and by the Community
In 2026, readers of The Galveston Daily News voted Tad Best Attorney in Galveston County, an honor that comes from the community he has served for more than three decades. This is the second time Tad has received this honor. That same year he was named a Texas Super Lawyer for the 12th consecutive year, a peer-reviewed distinction given to only a small percentage of Texas attorneys.
Giving Back
Tad believes a law firm should strengthen the community it serves. As former President of Galveston County Big Brothers/Big Sisters, he understands what it means to give your time to benefit the community. Tad Nelson & Associates funds scholarships for local high school students and keeps Little Free Libraries stocked outside its offices for neighbors of every age. The firm shares these efforts in the "In the Community" section of .
Teaching People Not to Make It Worse
After 35 years of watching good people make a bad situation worse, Tad is putting what he knows into a book. Don't Make It Worse: The Clueless Person's Guide to Tiptoeing Through the Criminal Justice System is a plain-spoken guide for anyone who suddenly finds themselves, or someone they love, caught up in the system. Set for release by the end of 2026.

Why the North Side, Why Now
For 35 years, Harris County clients have crossed the lake to reach Tad Nelson. Now he is crossing it for them. As a proud member of the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, Tad looks forward to serving the families and businesses of the Bay Area as a neighbor, not just their lawyer.
Thirty-five years. Both sides of the lake. One standard: prepared, committed, and ready to fight.

Excellent defense lawyer
Tad was a great help to my and my family. The Houston Police stopped me for suspicion of DWI and I was arrested. After I talked with a few lawyers, Tad was the only one that didn’t suggest probation. I didn’t feel I was guilty or did anything wrong. I needed help and Tad was there for me and said he ...
"I endorse this lawyer. Tad is excellent. Has been handling various matters for several years and has the ability and temperament to handle the most complex matters. He will take care of you."
"I endorse this lawyer. Tad is a highly respected criminal defense attorney who zealously fights for the rights of his clients. Tad was a fine prosecutor early in his career when he worked for me in the Galveston County DA's Office and now is enjoying a distinguished career as a top notch criminal defense attorney practicing throughout the State of Texas."
"I endorse Tad Nelson. Tad is a force to be reckoned with at every stage of the process. He bars none and in our line of business, that trait alone is what you need in tough times. Thanks for your guidance and pace setting."
"Tad is a very learned and professional attorney. I have had the pleasure of working with him as opposing counsel and consulting with him as a colleague. He is an asset to the legal community."
"I endorse this lawyer. Mr. Nelson is always gaining new education to seperate himslef from the competition. I've seen him at seminars in New Orleans and Chicago in the last year. For a lawyer from California to see the same person at seminars so often, it is obvious that he takes education and science very serious. I've also seen his colegues at several seminars as well. He expects the most of everyone around him. Great lawyer."
"I endorse this lawyer. As a former prosecutor in Galveston County, I had countless cases with Tad. I have also seen him in trial numerous times. He is a strong advocate and is always fully prepared to fight for his clients."
"Attorney Nelson embodies everything one could want in a true trial attorney. He is gifted in the courtroom. He is diligent, very prepared, and highly ethical. He has a thirst for knowledge like few I have ever met. He spends a great deal of time learning true bedrock scientific theory. He knows the value of learning and mastering forensic science. if you are a potential new client, you can trust him with your liberty. I know I would."
"As an attorney who has been on the opposing side during trial with Mr. Nelson, I can truly tell you that he is an excellent advocate. He is not just a storyteller. He puts in the actual homework and preparation needed to win the case. He is relentless in advocating for his clients both in and out of the courtroom."
"I met Tad Nelson at a Forensic Solid Drug Dose analysis in Chicago. Boy, he impressed me. The knowledge this lawyer has in Forensic Science is beyond that of most forensic chemists relied upon by State Prosecutors. Tad is a real advocate for those charged with DUI and other criminal offenses. His knowledge, education, and skill have made him a leading defense attorney in not just Texas, but in the United States."
"I endorse this lawyer. During my tenure as a prosecutor in Galveston County, Tad Nelson was that guy I knew was going to fight til the very end for his clients. He gained my utmost respect as a lawyer, litigator, and gentleman, due to the passion he exhibited for each of his clients. Even though we have spent the majority of the past six years on opposite sides of the isle, I consider Tad to be a mentor and a friend."
"Its always a good idea for a lawyer to get to know at least one lawyer in the 'the next county over'. For me, the next county over includes the greater Galveston-Harris Counties and Tad A. Nelson is the lawyer I have gotten to know over there for many years. He's a great lawyer, a tough negotiator, an accomplished litigator and someone I have recommended to others with very positive feedback received. Naturally, I endorse this lawyer."
"I endorse this lawyer. Tad is a very nice guy and a fighter in the courtroom. I met Tad at a seminar for gas chromatography and he showed knowledge and a desire to learn. Well known and respected, he is not afraid to go head-to-head with anyone. Highly recommended."
"I endorse this lawyer.I have had the pleasue of knowing Tad for more than 20 years.During that time he has shot to the top echelon of criminal defense attorneys in the country. This is not only my opinion, but the opinion of many others as evidenced by his regular appearances on national networks discussing current legal issues. I have worked with Tad on cases ranging from murder to traffic tickets and he invariably has brilliant insight and strategy in handling any matter. No situation or case is too big or complex ,he genuinely seems to welcome any challenge.Over the years I have sent numerous clients to Tad,always with excellent results. If I was ever to find myself facing a legal accusation,Tad would be the first person I'd call."
"I have worked with Tad Nelson when I was a prosecutor and then as a criminal defense attorney for the past several years. He is on my short list as a "go to guy" if I have a legal question or if I have a question about how something may play out in front of a jury. He knows people and it is easy to tell that he cares about his work and delivering excellent service to his clients."
"Tad is a highly respected, dynamic criminal defense attorney who understands that top-notch representation takes dedication and determination. Fired up and focused in the courtroom, he fights for his clients until the last second. Eager to stay on top of the science and law out of the courtroom, he pursues the latest education and certifications. Tad Nelson not only sets the bar extremely high for himself, ensuring his clients get the best representation possible, but sets an example of what quality criminal defense should be."
"I endorse this lawyer. Tad is one of the best attorneys in the state. He consistently obtains outstanding results for his clients. His results in jury trials speak for themselves, as his high percentage of "not guilty" verdicts is second to none.Rapidly gaining national attention as a legal analyst on various news programs. Outstanding representation at the highest level."
"I endorse Tad Nelson. I have known Tad since he was an Assistant District Attorney in the early 90s. Tad is a great lawyer and gets excellent results for his clients. Tad stays on the cutting edge of DWI/DUI defense by attending advanced seminars and being an active member of the top trade organizations. When I have a legal question, Tad is one of the first people I call."
"I met Tad because of his reputation for excellence in defending DWI cases but he has established himself as one hell of a criminal defense warrior in the Houston area. Tad attends all the top criminal defense seminars in order to stay on the cutting edge in the courtroom. I assure you that the prosecutors know who can take cases to trial for the win and Tad is definitely in that small group of trail lawyers. I know for a fact that I would refer every Houston area sex offense case to Tad as well as all other serious felonies. I do not give my endorsement lightly and assure you that Tad has the full backing of the DWI Dude when it comes to DWI representation and all serious felony accusation - when winning is the only option.
