Why do I love being a criminal defense attorney?

I get to be the bright light of hope in an otherwise dismal situation. I get to be the voice that eases my clients concerns when they are terrified about what might happen to them. I get to fight with them, challenging every allegation against them, and working tirelessly to prove their defense. There's no other job I'd rather have.

Criminal defense is my passion.

Recognized as an aggressive defender who gets impressive results in serious cases, Emily M. Gause is committed to compassionate representation, working with clients to devise an investigation plan and craft the most effective defense strategy.  She defends people charged with serious felonies in state and federal courts across the State of Washington.  Ms. Gause has overturned convictions in the Washington State Court of Appeals and obtained many favorable results in felony trials.  She has carved an impressive reputation in the criminal defense legal community as a rising star.

After graduating with a degree in criminal justice from Washington State University, Ms. Gause dove into law school with the intent of becoming a criminal defense attorney. Her commitment to this path never wavered.

While attending Seattle University School of Law, Ms. Gause worked at Northwest Defenders Association, a public defender agency in King County. Prior to that, she was a Rule 9 Law Clerk with the Washington State Attorney General's Office where she focused on dependency cases and juvenile law.

For the formative years of her practice as a criminal defense attorney, Ms. Gause worked alongside renowned criminal defense attorney John Henry Browne and his partner Emma Scanlan. She learned from Mr. Browne's extensive trial experience and developed a practice of defending high-profile felonies throughout the State of Washington.

In November 2014, Ms. Gause launched her own firm. At the Gause Law Offices PLLC, Ms. Gause and her team are committed to providing affordable, aggressive, and compassionate advocacy for their clients.

Ms. Gause has appeared in 22 counties in state superior courts across Washington state, and represented clients in all five United States District Courts in Washington.  She has handled hundreds of felony cases and obtained impressive victories in a wide range of cases, from shoplifting to murder cases and everything in between.

I believe that everyone has a story, and my role is to be the advocate that tells your story.

Best of the Best Super Lawyer! Got my Charge Dismissed!
Emily Gause and Laura Robinett are the best of the best super lawyers in Washington State. I was falsely accused of something I did not do. Before the accusations, I was at the top of my career with great reputation. I was successful through hard work, innovation, and being kind & generous. Unfortunately, I had the misfortune of teaching an immature ethically questionable student clinician who I caught lying, broke rules, and was late for work multiple times. When I counseled this struggling intern, she broke down, cried, and gained my sympathy. Over time, she called me her mentor and acted as though she could improve professionally and ethically. I was wrong. At the end of her training, to benefit her and her future patients, in her grading form, I wrote an honest feedback that she needed to improve professionally and ethically. She got murderously angry, but I didn’t know that she would retaliate the very next day with false accusations. She even lied to law enforcement officers. My boss told me to go with the special agents and answer their questions. *If law enforcement special agents want to ask you questions and accuse you of something that you did not do. Stop the interview. Tell them you want to invoke your 5th US Constitutional Rights. Then, call an attorney stat - Call Emily or Laura ASAP. If you don’t, you will be in a legal nightmare.* Most people believe law enforcement officers are helpful and are unbiased neutral enforcers of the law, and from my experience, this is true. However, when it comes to special agents who are trained as interviewers/interrogators, it seems, these officers will do what it takes, getting you tired, stressed out, shocking you, taking things out of context, using indirect threats, implied promises, hypothetical questions, repeatedly asking the same questions, denying your answers, cutting you off from answering, putting words that they want you to say right after asking a question, tricking you to wrongly remember, tricking you to miss speak, to get you the suspect to “go along” with their line of questioning, and much more. Then, they will write a one-sided mentally biasing report that contain only the pieces of the whole story in order to get you prosecuted. When the human brain is in a mental shock or stressed, it cannot process information correctly. The Special Agents are trained to trigger the stress hormone in your brain. The longer you talk with them, the more likely the stress hormones will make you wrongly remember. Eventually, you will miss speak. This is self-incrimination. Fact is, the law enforcement special agents have qualified immunity when they are interviewing suspects. This means, they can legally lie to you without problems. In my case, the interrogators used all their interrogation tactics with the guise of a neutral interview. In hindsight, I realize now, the special agents didn't care about the actual facts. They just wanted to get me to wrongly remember and miss speak in order to take things out of context to get me prosecuted. It is their job. They are good at their job. Please note: the special agents had evidence the accuser had lied to them. But, the special agents never mentioned this fact in their investigation report. Why wouldn’t they? Remember, their job is to get subjects prosecuted. Investigators will publicly say they are supposed to be unbiased and neutral. But, from my experience, this isn’t true. In the beginning of my case, I had incompetent prior lawyers. Only after Emily Gause and Laura Robinett took my case and pointed out to the prosecutor the non-credible evidence of the accuser and the mischaracterization of the special agent’s report, did the prosecutor offered me a guaranteed way, an SOC, to get my charge dismissed with prejudice. Emily and Laura explained all my legal options and risks, and I am grateful. I most highly recommend both Emily Gause and Laura Robinett above all other defense lawyers in Washington State.

Professional, Candid, and Highly Effective
Emily was recommended to me and I will be forever grateful. This legal situation involved false accusations of child molestation and was the most traumatic event of my 68-year life! With Emily representing and advising me for 26 months, we navigated this troublesome legal process we achieved a highly beneficial and life preserving outcome. Most helpful was Emily’s straight and candid advice with detailed explanations of the legal process specific to my case. Emily’s excellent experience always focused on what was needed most and she completed an incredibly efficient and successful legal representation. Emily was a strong legal advocate for me and the prosecution was overcome. I highly recommend Emily for your pertinent legal needs.

Empathetic, Resilient, Resourceful
Emily and her team did an amazing job representing our family in a very tough mental health federal case. Not only was Emily competent and an expert on mental health federal cases, but she was also incredibly kind and empathetic. We felt like she was always in our corner, advocating for our family while representing my father. She and her team worked diligently to put together various strategies and documents to ensure our case was addressed with urgency. We are so glad we chose Emily to represent us and so grateful to find an attorney who was passionate and experienced in her field while treating her clients as human beings.

Smart, tough and empowering!
Working with Emily was a great experience. She was straight to the point on what she could do for me, she knew what she was talking about and right from the get-go she considered my situation and gave me options. She was very informative and supportive in our initial call. Emily considered my personal/financial situation and empowered me to stand up for myself in my anti-harassment case with or without her. Though she made me feel empowered to do it on my own, I knew it was worth it to have her backing me up. She was tough when I wasn't sure I could be. I am so grateful that I came across her and if I ever have to go through a situation like this again or if anyone else I know is looking for a lawyer, I won't hesitate to call/refer her. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I was scared going into this situation and came out on the other side feeling empowered. Thank you, Emily!

A Pit Bull on a Pork Chop
A rare find.... Emily and Kim worked tirelessly on my daughters case. There was no option for a plea because of her career path. It was win or nothing. I was amazed at her skill and grace. I can only say that it was money well spent it was not cheap by any means; but if you want the best you have to pay a little. I am thankful and grateful for their hard work.

Case dismissed
Emily and her partner Andrea Kim were very through when it came to my case. It took approximately five months for my case to get dismissed but she was very transparent about the possible outcomes. From the beginning I let her know that anything but a dismissal would not be acceptable. She worked diligently all the was up to pre trail where my case was finally dismissed. She is a tenacious and tough lawyer who anyone would be happy to have on their side. I highly recommend her and I am very greatful that my family and I choose her and her associates to represent me in my assault/domestic violence case.

Emily is Incredible!
I was so scared upon first meeting Emily, as I had never been charged with a crime before and I was completely clueless on what to do. Not only did she explain, in detail, regularaly what was going to take place - but she worked HARD to get the results I wanted. As a client, Emily opens her doors. You can reach out to her at anytime and she is so professional and knowledgeable. You will feel reassured just knowing your case is in her hands. And today, because of Emily, I am happy to report that I am conviction-free! I would recommend her to anyone and everyone. She is the best of the best!

The very best I could have hoped for
Emily was an absolute godsend to me in a nightmare situation. She expertly handled all aspects of my case professionally and with a great deal of compassion. Since I had never been through a legal situation before, she helped me understand the process and she was a tenacious advocate for my innocence. The result was no charges filed and absolutely nothing on my record. She is highly respected by all levels of the legal profession from judges, prosecutors, detectives, and police. If you are looking to hire an attorney, she is definitely worth every single penny. I couldn't have asked for a better legal counselor. Thank you, Emily. You are amazing.

This woman is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!
I consulted Ms. Gause via phone from afar (we don't live in the same city/county) for advice on sealing a civil anti-harassment order and her generosity and assistance to me with the filing and the process were the SOLE reason my Motion to Seal was granted by the Court. The Court Clerk herself said she doubted it would be granted, (and gave me other misinformation), but Emily pointed out the Clerk's errors, encouraged me all the way, and we prevailed! Ms. Gause also helped me win my case by telling me EXACTLY what to focus on during oral argument, and it worked flawlessly--the Court Commissioner said he was impressed with my pro se presentation. DO NOT HESITATE TO HIRE THIS WOMAN IF YOU WANT TO WIN YOUR CASE, OR HAVE THE BEST SHOT AT DOING SO.

professional and compassionate
Ms. Gause is that rare and necessary mix in an attorney: professional and compassionate. I hired her to address an outstanding warrant from my past. I was frightened, scared, and dealing with the trauma from being in an abused relationship, and Ms. Gause kindly walked me through the necessary steps we would take to address my warrant and resolve me case. Despite having the warrant for many years, Ms. Gause was able to negotiate the quashing of my warrant and complete dismissal of my case. Additionally, Ms. Gause was able to negotiate with the courts for me to appear telephonically (I lived out of the state and as a college student found traveling to be beyond my finical means). Ms. Gause kept me informed during the procedure and arranged for partial deferment of her costs. I am so grateful that I heard about Ms. Gause and hired her. One could not ask for a better representative, a representative who cares about her clients and their futures.

Satisfied Client
Upon the recommendation of a third party, we engaged Emily Gause to help with a criminal matter. Without doubt, that was an excellent choice. She is personable and reassuring. Her fee structure seemed fair and reasonable, and she was forthright and clear in explaining it in detail. Ms. Gause was considerate in trying to schedule meetings and communications at our convenience. She described the best and worst possible outcomes, promised neither, but did estimate (accurately) the likelihood of events. She followed up on every pledge and informed us of developments in a timely manner. Her demeanor with the investigators and prosecutors was defensive, naturally, but seemed marked with an appropriately measured degree of cooperation. We would not hesitate to suggest the name of Emily Gause to anyone needing the services of a criminal attorney.

Very Professional and Result Oriented - I give Emily A+
I hired Law Offices of Emily M. Gause PLLC to seal vacated criminal records that have been hunting me for months and she delivered. I talked to number of attorneys before hiring Emily and in every instance it seemed that I knew more about the law then they did. After speaking with Emily I felt that she was very knowledgeable and very experienced in criminal defense as well as she really cared about getting me results that I wanted. After hiring Emily I got prompted attention and always knew what was going on. Because of her knowledge and experienced she got the records sealed. I hope I will never have to use her services again, but I would strongly recommend her firm to anyone looking for a professional and caring attorney. Thank you Emily!

"Tour De Banks Bank Robber"
In October 2012 I was arested for 8 counts of robbery in the first degree. The FBI nicknamed me the "Tour De Banks" because I used a bicycle to commit each bank robbery. Because my case was highly circulated in the media, my family tried to get me the best representation possible. After retaining some of the best attorneys that Washington state had to offer, only to find out that I would spend the rest of my life in prison, I was advised to hire "The Law Firm of John Henry Browne", with Emily Gause as the counsel. Her professionalism, hard work and dedication gave me and my family new hope, but the results speak louder then words. Emily arranged a bail reduction hearing on my behalf. My bail was reduced from 2 million to 500,000 and I was able to spend 16 months on house arrest with my family. I was very surprised to see that in contrast with other attorney's , Emily responded promptly to all my emails and phone calls. I was facing 50 to 60 years in prison, 40 of which were without good time due to the gun enhancements. With Emily's excellent negotiating skills and preserving, I was offered to sign a plea bargain for 108 to 144 months without any gun enhancements. Even more impressive was the sentencing memorandum that she put together and her arguments in front of the judge that gave me a downward departure sentence of 100 months. With all my confidence I can say that Emily Gause 's knowledge, skills, and passion for law makes her one of the best attorney's in Washington state. Thank you Emily.
