John Rodney Crowley

I was not John's client in the case but was a co-defendant. He saved all of our lives though and that is why I am reviewing him. Me and 3 others were charged with wire fraud. It went federal. We were all really scared. The case did not start very well but after a day or two of watching Crowl...ey work, he just kind of took control of the whole case for all of us. There were 8-10 former co-workers who pleaded guilty and were testifying against us saying we conspired with them. That was a lie. But the other lawyers looked up to john and asked John to question them. Watching him work was kind of like watching a lawyer movie except this movie was real and my life and my family's life was real. Sometimes I started to feel sorry for the people he was questioning because he was so tough on them. He could be really cold with a witness. But he got every one of those former co-worker witnesses - every single one - to admit that they were liars, cheaters and thieves and had been for a decade. Serious. Sometimes he would ask the witness to turn to the jury and say "I am a thief" or "I am a liar". But he had the witness boxed and they had to do it. That actually went on for 4-weeks the same way every single day. This trial went on for a month in federal court but the guy does not seem to really get tired. Every time I would see him outside of court, he looked fresh and aggressive. Didn't go to the bar after court like everybody else. Just kept to himself and was always working on the case and always was ready. Organized. Aggressive. Sharp. Federal Judge really respected him. He convinced all of the lawyers not to call clients as witnesses. We weren't real happy with that and just went along with it but he was right again. You could tell at the closing that the two federal prosecutors looked beat. They were a lot younger than John but basically he beat them down for month and beat them down hard. Those prosecutors learned a lot from him. They respected him too. The last word comes from the jury though. John told us early in the morning that deliberations had just started from a one month trial that he thought the verdict would come in around 4:00 in the afternoon. How this guy thought he knew the verdict would be in at about 4:00 on the same day deliberations started is a different matter. But that is exactly what happened. All the lawyers and clients were just sitting in a room at the courthouse talking when the judges clerk came in the room to tell us the jury had a verdict for us. We looked up at the clock and it was exactly 4:00. lt was really just eerie but we were all so scared that nobody really said anything about it until later. It seemed like it took forever to hear the verdict but all of us were found innocent of wire fraud, major economic fraud, conspiracy. 16-counts in all and lots of prison if we had been convicted.
