Eric Goodman is the managing partner of the Goodman Mooney, a firm specializing in intellectual property law and related business matters. A business entrepreneur as well as an intellectual property attorney, Eric has extensive experience in the fields of information technologies and brand protection.
Eric is a California native and grew up Orange County. He attended Pepperdine University where he earned his Bachelors of Science degree in business management. While an undergraduate student, he worked at the corporate headquarters of Denny’s Restaurants where he was responsible for implementing the company’s first local area network. Once graduated, he ran a small consulting firm which specialized in information technologies. Later, he formed an e-commerce company distributing specialty music and videos within the action sports market. At the same time, Eric launched a snowboard distribution company serving wholesalers around the world.
He graduated with honors from Whittier Law School where he earned a certificate in intellectual property law, was a member of the Law Review and the Moot Court Honors Board and president of the Whittier Intellectual Property Organization and the Entertainment and Sports Law Society. Eric is published in the Journal of Art and Entertainment Law, as author of A National Identity Crisis: The Need For A Federal Right Of Publicity Statute. Capitalizing on his technical background and experience in brand development, he was recruited by pioneer sports agent Leigh Steinberg to help launch an online forum for fans to interact with professional athletes as part of a joint venture with AOL. Eric also worked with Jeff Moorad (owner of the San Diego Padres) in securing internet domain names and protecting the right of publicity of professional athletes.
His practice currently focuses on trademarks, copyrights, trade dress, trade secrets, unfair competition, false advertising and contract disputes for brand owners, manufacturers, retailers and distributors in the apparel, fashion, sports, entertainment, food services, finance and gift item industries. Eric is admitted to practice law in the State of California, the Federal Court for all districts of California, as well as the Federal Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
Eric teaches advanced courses in intellectual property as an adjunct professor at Whittier Law School where he has also acted as the interim director of the Center for Intellectual Property. Mr. Goodman is quite literally one of only a handful of attorneys to whom I will refer clients. I have known Mr. Goodman on a professional level for more than 15 years. I have worked and consulted with him many times over the years and I cannot think of a negative thing to say. He is always willing to help someone, regardless of the subject matter for which they are seeking assistance. He is one of those very rare individuals and almost non-existent lawyers who is willing to compromise that which may be in his own best interest if, by doing so, he can make a difference in the life of another. I have a great deal of respect and admiration for his intellect and skills but, most importantly, his kindness. At a time when most attorneys are motivated by greed and ego, Mr. Goodman is one of those very rare individuals driven by his ideals and his humanity; this, I can honestly say, is what I respect the most about him!
