Monty has been a California civil trial lawyer since 1980 and a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates since 1995. He has extensive civil trial experience representing both plaintiffs and defendants in business, insurance bad faith and tort cases. Monty has tried to conclusion more than 100 cases, including 33 civil jury trials. He has obtained more than $50 million in settlements and verdicts for plaintiffs, and has obtained numerous defense verdicts and results for defendants.

From 2012 to the present Monty has been named in The Best Lawyers in America. From 2007 to the present he has been named as a Super Lawyer. Monty has been named numerous times as a Top Attorney by the San Diego Daily Transcript. Monty is a Master in the Enright American Inn of Court, has received two Outstanding Trial Lawyer Awards from the Consumer Attorneys of San Diego, and is "AV" rated by Martindale-Hubbell.

Monty was the President of the San Diego Chapter of ABOTA in 2014. He served as the President of the San Diego County Bar Association in 2002. From 2003-2006 Monty was a member of the Executive Council of the National Conference of Bar Presidents. From 2006-2010, Monty served as a member of the ABA Standing Committee on Judicial Independence. And, from 2005-2012 he served as a delegate in the ABA House of Delegates helping to set national policy for American lawyers.
