Biography
Jill Sullivan Sanford is Of Counsel to Sanford Heisler Sharp, LLP, a national law firm with offices in Washington, DC, New York, California, Tennessee, and Maryland. She received her law degree from Harvard Law School in 1996.
Ms. Sanford has tried cases involving gender discrimination, sexual harassment, contracts and business fraud. In her most recent gender discrimination trial, the defendant offered to settle the case after closing arguments for more than fourteen times its highest pretrial settlement offer.
Ms. Sanford has acted as co-lead counsel with Sanford Heisler Sharp, LLP in several class action cases, including a certified wage and hour class action against Costco, which she continues to litigate as Of Counsel to the Firm.
Ms. Sanford has made many presentations to attorneys on topics relating to trial practice. Most recently, she spoke to the San Diego Federal Bar Association about taking depositions and to the Association of Business Trial Lawyers about judicial ethics.
Ms. Sanford sits on the Board of Directors of San Diego Harvard Law School Alumni Association. Ms. Sanford sat on the Board of Governors of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers in 2011 and 2012, and on the Board of Directors of the Consumer Attorneys of San Diego in 2008 and 2009. She is a Barrister in the Enright Inn of Court, which is a San Diego Chapter of the American Inns of Court. She chaired the San Diego Bar Association’s Jay Wheeler Civility Seminar Committee, and in 2008 was a member of the San Diego Bar Association’s Committee on Civility, Integrity, and Professionalism in the practice of law.
Ms. Sanford volunteers as a Court Appointed Special Advocate through Voices for Children, a program advocating for abused and neglected children.
Ms. Sanford was recognized by the Los Angeles Magazine for excellence in class action and employment litigation as one of the “Top Women Lawyers in Southern California” in 2014. She was also recognized by the San Diego Daily Transcript in 2010 as one of the “Top Attorneys” in San Diego for corporate litigation. From 2011 through 2016, she has been named a San Diego “Super Lawyer,” a distinction that is awarded by peer vote and is highlighted in Super Lawyers magazine. Ms. Sanford was selected for inclusion in the 2013 and 2015 Editions of The Best Lawyers In America in the practice area of Employment Law – Individuals. Before joining Sanford Heisler Sharp, LLP, Ms. Sanford began her trial practice in 1996 at Latham & Watkins, where she successfully represented business clients in complex commercial cases through every phase of their litigation, including trial and appeals. In 2005, Ms. Sanford started a San Diego law firm, where she focused on representing plaintiffs in business and employment litigation.
