I was looking for an attorney through Smart Law referral website, and after they contacted some attorneys on my behalf--James picked up the referral almost immediately. Over the phone, he seemed very interested in my case and wanted to meet the very next day, and also asked that I make physical printouts of a lot of documents to bring with me.
However, once I arrived at his office, he spent the entire time trying to talk me out of suing. He did not even LOOK at the documents he had asked me for, and seemed to go out of his way to take the side of the people I wanted to sue.
I have no idea why he picked up a referral he clearly had no interest in as he was trying to talk me out of suing from the very first minute we started talking. The entire meeting felt weird and like a huge waste of time since it actually took a while to drive to James's office, and he could've easily told me what he said over the phone. The enthusiasm gap between what he said over the phone and then the next day in person was beyond weird, and I also didn't care for the abrasive way James talked.

They should start calling him, James "The Magician." I had been struggling with a "plagiarism" case that had been ongoing for 2 years. I hired 2 different lawyers prior to hearing about James. These lawyers were very convincing in how much experience they had and their aggressive approach to ensure the best outcomes possible, but this was not the case. I had to consistently follow up with these lawyers personally and propose potential solutions they should have come up with on their own. These 2 years had been a very very frustrating time for both me and my family as we were very worried about potential suspension or expulsion. However, 1 week prior to my UCLA hearing, I shared my case with a friend, who told me about James. In a matter of 1 week, the tables had turned. James was very experienced with the hearing process at UCLA and was aware of the obstacles students run into when representing themselves. We spent several sessions together strategizing the witnesses, and how to organized a strong oral presentation in my defense. This presentation was incredibly powerful in conjunction with the witnesses and James' presence at the hearing - the case was dismissed! James is very efficient and supportive, if you listen to what he says, he will get you out!

I hired James Kosnett to dispute an explusion from a medical program I was in. I believed the instructor they hired had no experience in teaching and they let me go without due process. The letter he wrote to the school was well written and had all the legal bullet points to why they should settle with me. I paid him $1000 dollars to do the government tort ( it was a public college). The claim was sent to the college to see if they would settle with me. He told me whatever amount they would settle with me, would be mine to keep, he did not charge a fee if I got anything back.
A few months later after sending the tort I got a letter from the insurance company representing the school that they did not agree to the claim. The next step was to go to court. Kosnett further did not take the case since the college was out of area for him. Kosnett originally told me if we had to move to the next level (which he said he highly doubt it would) he would represent me. He then told me to find a school closer to the area, which I probably should have done in the beginning.
Overall I am out $1000 but it was somewhat worth for me since I found out the teacher was let go. I feel proud that I decided to defend myself. However Kosnett should have told me to find another representative closer to the school.

I had a bad experience for a legal counsel / non-litigation case.
After James Kosnett wrote a simple one-page letter and the school turned down the request for me to meet with an Ombudsman, I changed my mind and asked for a portion of my retainer back (for medical reasons I was trying to retroactively re-take an exam or get a W).
In my free consult he had told me that he could likely handle my entire situation with my full $900 retainer or less. $900 was more than I hoped to spend, and we discussed this. I reconfirmed this during the one brief phone call after that as well, stating that I definitely did not want to pay more than the retainer to solve this, and would help as much as I could to keep the cost under that, which he said was possible. I did not understand/realize that the wording in the retainer contract I signed allowed them to bill me beyond the $900 without my authorization. I expected a decent portion back when I decided not to pursue my requests from the school further after just one short letter.
Instead, the firm sent me a bill for $1575.00 that overcharged me beyond my retainer by $675, which I was unaware was even possible for them to do. When I called to dispute that, they insisted that I come into their office in person to discuss returning any of the retainer, as they would not do it by phone - more time/money of mine. They had a saccharine office assistant named Santiago come into the room and tell me he'd hate to see a nice person like me have to pay above the retainer and that if I ask nicely to just pay the retainer amount that they'd probably absolve me of the rest. When I got in the room with Mr Kosnett expecting to negotiate a fair portion of my retainer back, his son Louis who I had not met in my free consult joined, and they played good cop bad cop against me, telling me if I signed an NDA they had prepared that I wouldn't have to pay the extra $675, they would just keep the full portion of my retainer. I balked and walked without signing it, feeling highly manipulated, and upset they were billing me $900 for just the one 15 minute phone call and one short letter they wrote after having given me different verbal expectations in the consult and phone call. To add insult to injury, I got a parking ticket while there.
I then filed for an arbitration with LACBA to dispute their $1575 bill and get back some of my retainer. This was delayed for many months, and scheduled in Pasadena despite the fact that I lived in Santa Monica near their office. No one from their firm showed up to the arbitration (James Kosnett joined by phone). I had taken half a day off work and driven all the way to Pasadena to be there. I did not win any of my retainer back. It was ruled against me. Legally how they billed was fine based on the retainer contract I had signed, it turns out.
Next time I hire a lawyer I will be certain there is a written clause in the contract stating they are not allowed to bill beyond the retainer without my authorization.

I went to James for a UCLA academic misconduct case. James is very knowledgeable about cases like this since he has dealt with many dean meetings and hearings. At the initial consultation, he explained to me how the general process works. At our first meeting, James gave really on-point advice based on his past experience dealing with the school about what to do at the dean's meeting. He had a way to help make my wording more convincing. So James is very sharp about these things.
A the end, we were able to win our case at the dean's level without going through a hearing. So, if you're involved in messy academic dishonesty accusation, I'm sure James is able to help make the case better.

Kosnett was just very disinterested, arrogant, old and unprofessional during the whole matter. He was so rude that he often interpruprred our talking. He doesn't not care much the result and the process, all his interest lies on the money, because he charges the same amount of money no matter what the result is. He did not better our chance of wining the case by any means- He wrongly assumed his good old little strategy would work everywhere without tailoring to the situation of individual client. Unproeasionally dressed and talking arrogantly to clients. People hire him out of desperation but all he is interested is the money, not about doing all he can to help people win; money always come first for him!!

James Victor Kosnett Esq. is an extremely experienced education lawyer, and as his client I felt he 'had my back.' He is responsive to email and phone inquiries and gives you the best advice. Every time I have hired Mr. Kosnett, he has resolved the matter quickly with one or two strongly worded letters. Santiago is a prompt and professional legal assistant. I would recommend the Kosnett Law Firm without reservation.

We hired Mr. Kosnet knowing it was an uphill battle. He did nothing to defer the suspension or guide us. He sat idly by and collected his fee. Waste of money and time; we would have been better representing ourselves.

I highly recommend Kosnett Law Firm, Santiago is also wonderful.

Above all, Mr. Kosnett and his staff were very well versed in my nursing license case and a pleasure to work with. He was able to clear my record of all wrongly accused offenses and I was able to continue working in the nursing profession that I love. I highly recommend Kosnett Law Firm.
