Do Not Recommend

I retained an attorney for post divorce decree modifications, assuming the same attorney that represented me previously would provide the same service and results. While things went well initially, the court appearance did not end in our favor. After that, I received no communication until I followed... up for an update, and in my opinion staff did not communicate kindly about their failure to send billing statements or updates regarding my case. They seemed more interested in arguing why they did nothing wrong than providing empathetic customer service when failure to provide billing statements became a concern.

Big Fees & Little Impact - Beware!

I was hesitant to write this review b/c I know how this type of lawyer will work overtime to spin the review/message I’m about write. I retained Annette Cox Sandoval’s services for my divorce in May of 2017 & fired her in October of 2017. I was impressed during the initial consult w/ Annette Cox Sand...oval, but after she was retained, she became an extreme advocate for her billing tactics, overly aggressive for payment and cared less and less about me as her client. Tons of meaningless filings were done to drain the retainer; none of those filings were EVER enforced by the court. A gigantic discovery was amassed, which she mandated I provide to the defendant; was lucrative for Annette, but did nothing to bring me closer to a divorce. In effect, for one 15 min appearance before a judge and one 30 min status conference call with the Judge to essentially admonish both Annette and opposing counsel, for being outlandish, I ended up paying Annette Cox Sandoval over $22k. I’m still trying to recover from this financial hardship she created for me! And, trying to figure out how a person hired to represent me for my divorce had such little impact on my case, yet charged such enormous fees? And, I am by no means wealthy at all. I was so disappointed in Annette Cox; every time I’d ask her to clarify her role and/or positions I should take in my case, I ended up being made to feel stupid for asking and being charged a ton of money for asking. Now, I will give Annette credit for one thing: She did a Yeomen’s job staying on top of every aspect of her billing & hiding behind her fee schedule as justification of her fees. But in the end, Annette’s impact is rated as inefficient and ineffective! No thanks to Annette, I’m Finally divorced! But, because her tactics & ineffective positions taken in my case, I’m no better in the end than when it all began. Potential clients all I can say is “Beware”. If you’ve worked hard for every penny you make, have assets you need to protect and stand to lose if your case is handled ineffectively, this may not be the right lawyer for you. Her, “my way or the highway” approach proved to be very costly during my divorce and after! I’m offended there isn’t an advocacy group that hasn’t already shut this lawyer down!

It is unfortunate to hear you had this experience. The Firm prides itself on providing personal and professional services. It appears that you may not have understood the fee agreement in full, and unfortunately no attorney at the Firm is capable of working for free except in specific pro bono circumstances. Unlike many law firms, I also provide significant discounts and no charge many fees in an effort to keep the costs more reasonable. However, in some cases the conflict between parties exacerbates the amount of work and increases the costs. With regards to tactics, I do not take any positions on cases - the client(s) take the positions, and so if you opted to take a certain position that in the end was unproductive or unsuccessful, that is ultimately because of a decision you made. My job is to provide information and options as well as to help the client weigh the pro's and con's of a certain strategy. I cannot and do not act independently without the client's consent. If there was ineffectiveness, it is often due to the Court's decisions, as I do not ultimately control or dictate the outcome - the judge does. The vast majority of my clients are pleased with their outcomes, and any complaints regarding services can be addressed by the State Bar of Arizona. Thus far, I have provided and intend to continue to provide ethical and responsible services in compliance with all State Bar regulations.

Poor experience

I unfortunately had a very bad experience with Annette M. Cox as my attorney. She takes days, sometimes almost a week, to respond to calls or emails and that is not an isolated incident over a mundane issue. The delayed responses dealt with sensitive issues about my divorce and child custody case ...and I don't know if she is overwhelmed by her case load or just doesn't care to respond on time. There are too many good lawyers out there to take being treated like this as a client. Ms. Cox also has a "my way or the highway" attitude about representation and she is quick to threaten to withdraw representation if even a MENTION of an alternative idea, settlement, etc. is made. We ended up parting ways and my new attorney is everything Ms.Cox wasn't. Accommodating, responsive, client-focused, etc. and I have learned that most of the work Ms. Cox "performed" was for naught in furthering my case. Rather, it just unnecessarily ramped up the emotion (and my bill to her) in the case. Be careful before hiring Ms. Cox as your attorney. There are better options out there.

I am pleased you found alternate representation with whom you are satisfied. I hope you take his or her advice, as you certainly did not want to take mine; There was no sense in continuing representation as a result, and no matter the outcome I achieved you would have been dissatisfied. The Firm had much success on your matter. We prevailed on a motion which resolved a large part of this case. You agreed to certain strategies and then reneged, without consulting counsel. Because we had differing viewpoints about how to proceed with the litigation, I believed withdrawal was appropriate. Your matter was set back by your own actions not by the Firm's. While you are right that it took me several days (approximately five business days) to respond to one of your emails, it was due to the fact the Firm was handling an emergency. It was also due to the fact that you demanded that I NOT respond to email(s) on the weekend because you did not want increased charges. With regards to the billing comments, you received numerous discounts and credits as well. I wish you and your family the best in spite of this very clear breakdown in communication.

DO NOT HIRE THIS ATTORNEY!!

My husband and I hired Annette to help us in a dependency case regarding our niece and nephew who BEGGED us for help. She took our case, charged us THOUSANDS of dollars and within 10 days of representing us threw a fit in court and quit because she didn't want to go against DCS, at the expense of my... suicidal niece. She is part of the delicate ecosystem of attorneys and government agencies who tread very carefully to not piss each other off at the expense of children who need help. I'll never get back the thousands of dollars I spent and am now back in the same predicament of family members asking me for help but not knowing where to turn because the system is so corrupt. I honestly have no idea how this woman sleeps at night.

Thank you for your comments. The reality and simple fact is that you failed to appear for a hearing on time and the judge made a decision that you were unhappy about. I wish I could control the judges, but I cannot. If I could, I'd be able to please everyone who hires me. Such expectations though were/are unreasonable, and as a result, it was best for both of us to cease representation. That said, I am always willing to challenge DCS when that is the best strategy, and likewise, I am also willing to work with DCS if that will yield a result in the best interest of the children. These particular cases are never about you as they are about the child and family as a whole. The judge ultimately is the decider of the facts, not me.

Bad experience

Based on reviews on this site, we contacted this office. We used the intake form provided to us by her paralegal. We e-mailed the form to the address on the form. We called at our appointment time and were told they hadn't received the e-mail, which they had they just had not opened it. They said we ...should have used a different e-mail. So we had made time for the interview and scrambled to get everything they needed, and were told they couldn't do the consultation. Then in an apparent cover up for her mistake Ms. Cox blamed us for being upset and threatened to sue us if we contacted her para legal. Maybe it was a bad day for them, I know it was for us, and they made it worse. She's not a nice person, if she treated us that way, it could be you next.

This type of response is a surprise and is not typical for any of my clients. Both my staff and I work diligently to provide compassionate yet aggressive services to clients going through Divorce. We also take these kinds of accusations seriously and are always open to feedback on how we can improve our services. From your comments, it sounds like you never retained our services, much less had a consultation. I am confident that you would have had a clearer picture of our dedication and professionalism if you had done so. I believe it is important to find an attorney with whom you feel comfortable, and likewise, my staff and I must be comfortable with the clients who engage us. I will defend my clients' goals tenaciously as well as my staff to ensure a proper, respectful working relationship - all with the intent of achieving positive results for my clients. We wish you the best in your pursuit of legal representation.
