Biography
Prior to joining Rocky Mountain Defenders, P.C., Kevin S. Vander Werff, Sr. worked for approximately 6 years as a full-time criminal defense attorney with Keith Barton & Associates, P.C. and previously as corporate in-house counsel for a technology company.
Mr. Vander Werff has experience in business law, bankruptcy law, insurance defense, criminal law and personal injury law. Kevin Vander Werff currently focuses his efforts as a criminal trial attorney whose practice is limited to criminal defense cases.
Kevin has tried both felony and misdemeanor jury trials and has dealt with a wide range of cases involving everything from sex charges to traffic cases. Many of Kevin's trials involve defending DUI cases. Kevin has received specialized training for DUI defense and has completed the NHTSA course for the Standard Field Sobriety Test (SFST) which is the same training received by police officers who are administering the Sobriety Tests in the field. Kevin has earned a reputation for aggressively defending his clients against criminal charges and is an effective negotiator when you need someone in your corner.
Mr. Vander Werff graduated with his Bachelor's degree in Business Management from Utah Valley State College in 1998. He attended law school at Creighton University School of Law in Omaha, Nebraska and was a visiting student at the J. Reuben Clark School of Law at Brigham Young University, receiving his Juris Doctor degree in 2001 from Creighton University. During law school, he clerked for the Federal Defender of Nebraska, David R. Stickman, where he learned the great importance of protecting constitutional rights of all citizens. While in law school, he served as president of the Intellectual Property Law Society.
Kevin is a member of the Utah Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and admitted to practice law in all state & federal courts in the state of Utah.

Wouldn't hire again.
Prior to contacting Kevin, I had heard charges might come forward for a crime I did not commit. I decided to retain a lawyer just in case. Replied last April 07, 2018This review is unfortunately very untrue. This client was a Dr. charged many years ago with a very serious crime (I am choosing to protect this client by not posting his name, or the nature of the crime). We represented him from the pre-file stage of the case to the filing of the case, and started representing him in court after his arrest. We were still in the discovery stage of the representation. This was a very complex case, so discovery issues were voluminous. Unfortunately the Dr. was in custody as we worked the case, including attempting to get bail reduced to a reasonable level. The state was very zealous in not wanting the good Dr. out, given the nature of his charges, and opposed any reduction to bail. The Dr. could not post the bail that was determined by the judge on the case, and was understandably upset by this. I was very sympathetic to his situation and continued to work the case. The Dr. decided to hire a new attorney and let our firm go on the case. Ironically, he later fired his other attorney as well. I have spoken with her about this. I am happy that the case was ultimately dismissed against the Dr. I find it sad, and unprofessional that the Dr. is choosing to falsely smear people who were fighting FOR him throughout the process. That being said, I wish him well.
