26+ years Criminal Defense - Never a prosecutor. I have no experience putting people in cages, only keeping them out. Criminal Defense SuperLawyer - Faculty at Trial Lawyers' College for 7+ years - Title IX University Sexual Misconduct Defense Lawyer
Discovering the true story of your starts on day 1. It starts with you and your experience. It continues as we learn about the witnesses, police response, prosecutors and society. Motives, pressures and other blinders lead to false beliefs or false accusations. As we learn the true story, we investigate to support it, and to disprove the prosecution story. Its basis is found in science and psychology. The true story of your case provides the best way to win at trial. It also allows gets to the best plea bargain, if that is your desire. This process works. It works to give you #honestresults.
My job is learn the facts, know the law and present it all to you so you can make good decisions. If your decision is trial, my job is to win (attorney regulation says I cannot promise more than my sincerest effort towards that goal, so that is my promise). This is best done by telling the true story of the case. The Trial Lawyers College taught me how to do that. Now, I teach it to others as part of the Trial Lawyers College Faculty. Second to winning a trial is helping a lawyer to learn how to win.
We handle many University Sexual Misconduct claims, also known as Title IX or Institutional Equity. The standard criminal defense rules are not followed and the burden of proof is 50.1%. It is highly unfair and the schools rarely follow their own rules. Despite these facts, we win at each level. While most of the case is handled at the University level, we also fight these cases in State and Federal Court. The Federal Courts very clearly see the lack of Due Process.
Plaintiff Injury work is quite enjoyable. My goals are for 1) the client to regain health, 2) someone else pays for it, 3) the client gets money to become whole. The work is challenging, and I love getting to know my clients and their friends/family.
The law is important. After more than 26 years practicing, I know law. I always find new bits. Every year, the legislature changes the law and appellate courts interpret it with greater nuance. Sometimes it helps, more often the District Attorney council lobbies to make convictions easier. What never changes is the power of story. A well told true story of a case will win where reliance on law will not. As powerful as "proof beyond a reasonable doubt" sounds, jurors focused on harm and emotion will convict. The true story solves that. The true story challenges the prosecutor to disprove this story of innocence beyond a reasonable doubt. The true story is one the jury sees and feels. It does not rely upon the cold reason of logic, of law.
I love the spirit of the west and Colorado in particular, standing for what you believe in, courage, self determination. The mountains call me, and I ski, mountain bike, dirt bike, hike etc. More recently, I started surfing. Now the ocean waves call every few months.
As a youth, I learned how to eat, dance and speak with neighbors in Louisiana. I will always love my LSU Tigers football team. If you can understand Coach Orgeron, good on you. Geaux Tigahs. For law school, I traveled to Washington DC, attending Georgetown. The East Coast was a different experience, and not much like here. No matter where I go, there is nothing more beautiful than our mountains. Colorado is home. After school, I became a Colorado Public Defender and tried every type of case you can imagine. I won more than I lost. Despite my success, I felt there was more I could do in my cases. In 2010, I attended the 3 week Trial Lawyers College in Wyoming. The work we did there changed my life. I remain passionate, but now I am happy as well. It changed my practice too. I am a better lawyer, and a better human.
I have believe in the individual, not corporations nor govenments. In my time, I have seen too many injustices committed by corporations or govenments to work for them or help them. I hope they will act for the benefit of all, but that is not their motive. Money and power are their motives.

I am extremely grateful to have had Jason as my attorney in handling my case. There are not enough words to describe how professional, knowledgeable, and outstanding Jason is both as an attorney and as a human being. I encountered Jason during a very difficult moment in my life when false accusations...

Hiring Jason for my case was the best decision I could have made! I was facing a felony DUI and had a concurrent probation violation and was beyond stressed. As soon as I was referred to Jason and spoke to him, I knew he was the right lawyer for the case. I immediately felt relief and began to get sl...

Jason Savela answered on my first call and he answered many questions I had after being arrested for my first offence. He was candid, straight to the point, and really helped calm my nerves. He walked me through the judicial processes with ease and got my case completely dismissed. I would highly rec...

In October 2019, I was pulled over for illegal lane change and refused to provide roadside tests/breathalyzer with my son in the car. I was arrested and booked into jail for DUI, and child abuse. The entire experience was devastating. I previously used Jason 15 years ago and called him right away....
"I met Jason when I first practiced in the Public Defender's office in Colorado Springs. Jason was and is very knowledgeable and he is always eager to assist other attorneys. Jason is very diligent and helpful."
"Jason is a highly skilled trial attorney who is intelligent, creative, and a tremendous advocate. I endorse this lawyer."
"Jason is a top-notch trial lawyer who is totally dedicated to his clients. He will fight for you. I highly recommend him."
"I endorse this lawyer. If you want a fighter than Jason Savela is your man. Jason is one of the best litigators I know and a person I would not hesitate to hire if I needed a lawyer. I would highly recommend him to any family member or friend who was charge with a crime."
"I endorse this lawyer. Jason Savela is a truly excellent attorney. He has both the intelligence and professional savvy to obtain excellent results for his clients, but even more importantly, he cares a great deal about getting those results. Mr. Savela continuously furthers his already advanced knowledge of the law, and continuously develops the skills needed to defend those that have been accused of crimes. In a world where there are plenty of bad attorneys, a client is very fortunate to have chosen him as their lawyer. He will undoubtedly leave no stone unturned for his clients, often with uncommonly favorable outcomes for them."
"I have known Mr. Savela for over 17 years when both of us practiced together at the Public Defender's Office. Mr. Savela is both tenacious and caring; aggressive but able to use the soft touch when required, and most importantly, Mr. Savela is a helluva litigator. I hired Mr. Savela as an expert witness on a case where my client was wrongly convicted. Mr. Savela's preparation and expertise helped me immensely. Further, I have watched Mr. Savela represent, defend, an advocate in other settings for his clients, and nothing impresses me more than his singular vision to solve the issue, crisis, or problem for each and every client."
"Mr. Savela's is a lawyer that is truly passionate about his work and excels at devising strategies in both the pre-trial and trial stage. His extensive training in trial advocacy makes him a force to be reckoned with in the courtroom. He has helped me in developing my practice immensely and his advice reflects the years of experience and knowledge that he possesses."
"I had the opporutnity to meet Attorney Savela at a Trial Lawyers College jury selection seminar. After spending nearly 4 days together I was left impressed with his trial skills and his exceptional knowlegdge of the law. I would not hesitate to endorse Attorney Savela to anyone facing criminal charges in Colorado."
"Jason is an excellent and committed attorney. He is knowledgeable and committed to helping his clients. He is quick to aid his peers and is a leader in our criminal defense attorney. You would be well served to hire him as your attorney."
"I endorse this lawyer. Jason has considerable experience and is always willing to share his experience, intellect, and keen insight with fellow attorneys, clients, and members of the Avvo community. He is a true credit to our profession and I regularly refer clients who are closer to him geographically."
"I have known Jason professionally for several years. We are both members of the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar and we have attended legal training together including DUI breathalyzer school where were we became certified operators. On several occassions I have used his well-written pleadings and insight in my cases. Both my clients and I have greatly benefitted from his knowledge. He is well respected among his peers."
