I once hire him to defend me on a misdemeanor assault charge where I was completely innocent. I was defending myself from being attacked, was thrown on the ground and held down for several minutes. I got up and punched the guy several times, I admit. But, like I said, it was self-defense.
I paid $3,000 to represent me. We shook hands and he was my counsel.
I go to a couple of court dates and Scott comes back with a plea bargain of 300 days in jail and advises I should take it. What? The maximum I could have gotten was 365 days. And that's if a jury found me guilty. He went on about how you never know what juries will do. But that he'd be glad to try it if I gave him another $3,000. Are you kidding me? I have a right to trial, and I already paid him to represent me for the case.
So I decide Scott isn't the right lawyer for me. I went to his office to get a refund. All he did is show up to court and talk to the prosecutor, so it's not like I worked him to death with my case. Scott declined to give me his money back. So I told the people in his office he's a crook and to stay far away from him. He threatened that if I came back to his office again, he'd shoot me. Literally. So I called a detective and told him what happened. Scott claimed he would have me arrested if I came to his office (I was his client), and that he would shoot me. I told him I'll stand out in front of your office with a sign if I have to. Again, he said if I did that on his property, he'd shoot me. I was talking about the sidewalk.
Long story short, I discussed what happened with the detective. The detective said, "actually, we've had several complaints about this same issue with this same guy. Let me give him a call and advise him to give you your money back. You're well within your rights. And I'll not arrest you if you protest on the sidewalk in front of his office. But first, let me see if I can get your money back."
The detective called and told me to come pick up the check. So I did, and hired another lawyer who was recommended by my university. A couple of court dates later, the case was dismissed.

Took my $1500.00 and did absolutely nothing on my case.
