success

She gets the job done. I had to hire her because without her help, I would’ve ended up with a felony on my record. I’m extremely grateful that she was able to prevent that. Even though the cost felt high at the time, the outcome was absolutely worth it.

Horrific experience extremely painful

I retained Deanna during one of the most traumatic periods of my life. At the time, I had filed a serious civil lawsuit against an attorney who had engaged in an inappropriate intimate relationship with me and later retaliated by involving his estranged wife in obtaining a restraining order. Instead... of advocating on my behalf, I felt pressured by Deanna to sign a unilateral settlement agreement with the estranged wife—an agreement that ultimately resulted in significant legal and personal consequences for me. During the course of representation, she suggested that I may have been responsible for sending the allegedly fabricated messages that formed the basis of the restraining order. Hearing such an accusation from my own attorney was deeply distressing. Months later, a key witness came forward and admitted she had been paid to fabricate threats and had not been fully compensated as promised. This information directly contradicted the assumptions that had previously shaped my case. I have since retained new counsel who believes me, has reviewed the evidence, and has filed an appeal based on this newly surfaced information. In my experience, I did not receive meaningful advocacy in the restraining-order matter, despite being charged $7,500 in legal fees. No substantive court argument was made on my behalf, and I felt pressured into accepting a one-sided agreement rather than being supported through a thorough investigation of the facts. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend her services. Individuals facing serious legal matters deserve an attorney who will advocate diligently, fully investigate the evidence, and stand firmly by their client rather than encourage agreements that may cause lasting harm.

Extremely Frustrated Hiring Deanna!

I rarely leave negative reviews, but I felt compelled to share my experience. Due to changes in immigration policies due to the new administration, I hired Deanna to help vacate my disturbing the peace convictions after she assured me on three separate occasions that she could advocate with the prose...cutor’s office in ways other attorneys could not. That high level of initial optimism with a “let’s win this attitude” was the primary reason I chose her over others who were more candid about the limitations of post conviction relief in Michigan. Once I retained Deanna, however, the direction of the case became unclear. The creative alternative strategy initially described never materialized, and the MCR 6.500 motion, which was not mentioned until much later, was ultimately presented as the only option, along with significant additional costs. By that time, months had passed without meaningful progress. As the process continued, communication also became increasingly hostile, strained and difficult. During the case, I was advised that challenging my earlier plea based on ineffective assistance of counsel is a feasible option but I was told that my former criminal defense attorney would not be willing or able to help, only to later learn directly from him that he was fully willing to assist. That contradiction was troubling and made me question whether there was ever a clear and consistent plan in place. Despite my concerns, I followed Deanna’s advice to proceed with the 6.500 motion. She recommended working with an appellate attorney of her choice whose fee was far beyond what I could afford. Because of financial constraints, I explored more affordable options, but each one was dismissed without consideration. After discussing with Deanna, I ultimately relied on my former defense attorney, who knew the case well, to draft the motion. It was filed with Deanna’s approval, yet the prosecution opposed it anyway. In hindsight, it appears the outcome would likely have been the same regardless of who authored the motion. No attorney can guarantee results, but the optimism and assurances I received were misleading. I made significant financial sacrifices to afford her services while caring for my son with autism, and I feel deceived, unsupported, and set back tens of thousands of dollars without any meaningful relief.

I pride myself on providing ethical and zealous representation to every client, and have never promised a specific outcome. Many attorneys avoid clients who are already in a tough position, but I believe those are the clients who need the most help, and I do everything I can do to provide it. Past clients will attest to the fact that I am clear and realistic about potential outcomes. I remember things differently than what you describe, but am ethically prohibited from commenting publicaly. You have my number, please feel free to text me to discuss your grievances.

HIGHLY recommend!

Deanna’s name is highly regarded in the law community. Her name was given to me by several attorney friends in a time of need, I’m so thankful to have met her. She began working on my case within minutes of my initial call to her. Deanna was nothing but empathetic and hard working when resolving my ...case for me, I’ll be forever grateful for her expertise!

Excellent legal representation

Deanna represented me in a 2nd DUI case out of the 52nd district court. She came up with a solution for the most favorable outcome in my scenario and was able to work with my specific judge to make this happen. The outcome was exactly what we were both looking for in my particular case based on the s...ituation she was given. Deanna and her paralegal Shirley are excellent to work with, very timely and able to get a hold of either of them very easily. I would recommend Deanna, she was well respected in the 52nd court and seems to very well known in the legal community.

"As a criminal defense attorney, if I were facing a criminal charge myself, there are colleagues whom I would turn to for help and those whom I would not trust. Deanna Kelley is one of about 4 or 5 that I would count on because she has proven herself again and again. Whether you're seeking a plea deal or planning to fight your charges all the way by taking it to Trial, Deanna is the lawyer who will pay attention to those important facts that lesser attorneys ignore, and her meticulously planned Trial strategies unravel like an intimidating checkmate that Prosecutors don't realize they're in until it's too late. I'm not being forced to write this review, so let the very fact that I felt compelled to give this endorsement stand as a testament to Deanna's prowess in the courtroom."

"Deanna Kelley is an outstanding criminal defense lawyer and a well respected litigator. What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
