About Elizabeth

Learn Elizabeth’s areas of practice.

I currently practice law in Washtenaw County, Michigan at the law firm of Kitchen Sharkey, PLLC, where I handle complex family law matters (divorce, custody, separate maintenance, paternity, child support). I am also a trained family law mediator and am regularly selected by my peers to mediate family law disputes.  While Washtenaw County is where the majority of my cases are handled, I also have practice experience in Genesee, Ingham, Jackson, Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland and Wayne counties.

In 2015, I was elected by my peers to serve on the State Bar of Michigan, Representative Assembly.  From 2009-2012, I also served in an elected position on the Family Law Council for the State Bar of Michigan. In addition to my State Bar work, I am also active on a local level.  I am a past-president elect of the Washtenaw County Bar Association (2015-2016) and a past president of Washtenaw Region of Women Lawyers Association of Michigan (2012-2013).

For each of the years from 2011 through 2018,  I was selected as a "Rising Star in Family Law" by Super Lawyers Magazine. Additionally, in 2013 I was awarded the State Bar of Michigan Kimberly Cahill Bar Leadership Award for my work in developing the WCBA Modest Means Program.  This program affords lower-income individuals an opportunity for legal representation in family law matters at a reduced hourly rate.  In 2017, I was awarded the Women Lawyers Associsation of Michigan (Washtenaw Region) Mary Foster Award.  The Mary Foster Award is bestowed annually to a member of Women Lawyers whose leadership, talent, and significant contributions to women provide a role model for women in the profession and women in general.

In my role as co-chair of the Family Law Section of the WCBA (2006-2009), I hosted monthly luncheon meetings as well as annual seminars on a variety of family law topics. The seminar topics included, “Clients in Crisis: Dealing with Difficult Clients” (2007) and “Same Gender Issues in Michigan Law” (2008, featuring keynote speaker Justice Marilyn Kelly of the Michigan Supreme Court).  I have also served as a contributor for the Institute of Continuing Legal Education (ICLE), presenting on the matter of Managing Clients While the Divorce Case is Pending (Family Law Institute, 2017).

I come by my love of the law naturally. My father, Leonard Kitchen, practiced law in Dexter, MI for over 35 years. In addition to family law litigation and mediation, I also work as a parenting coordinator and a guardiam ad litem.

Very Good and Honest Lawyer
I was very happy to have Elizabeth represent me in a divorce case. She was honest and clear, and she obviously has very good experience. She never tried to drag the case longer, and she actually helps find a realistic and efficient solution to the problems I was having, while putting my kids as top priority. She did not overpromise anything and she explained the possible outcomes clearly, which I was very important for me.

Sharp, Knowledgable and A True Advocate
I worked with Elizabeth on complicated parenting time, custody and division of marital property issues. She listened and advised, while providing realistic information in a caring, compassionate and professional manner. She was able to absorb lots of intricate details very quickly – highly efficient and effective in all of her interactions. Honest and trustworthy and I always felt she had my best interests in mind. A true partner and true advocate for my needs. I highly recommend her to handle even the toughest cases with ease.

Incredible
Elizabeth helped me achieve exactly what I hoped to achieve in an already existing custody case. She was extremely efficient every step of the way. After our first meeting, she retained every bit of information I gave her, to the finest detail. Which was extremely impressive and made me feel very confident in her. She was, compassionate, determined, honest, and always accessible. I highly reccomend Elizabeth to anyone involved in divorce, custody, or any family related matters. Thank you Elizabeth for the incredibly positive change in mine and my son's life.

Excellence Found
I retained Elizabeth in 2014 for a divorce matter involving 3 minor children. While I imagine that nobody enjoys going through the divorce process, I will say that I felt confident and well-informed throughout the often arduous process. Full credit for that goes to Elizabeth’s care and expertise in her handling of my case. My case ultimately settled during mediation, but also required court presence concerning various motions. I can say that Elizabeth is as comfortable in a courtroom setting as she is in a mediation setting. When in court, she was a zealous (and successful) advocate, achieving great results for me. When in mediation, she really helped to brainstorm possible resolutions and provided me with very objective and well-reasoned advice, even when it wasn’t always what I wanted to hear. Divorce is a process that can bring out the worst in people (as I personally experienced and have witnessed in friends/family during divorce), and my divorce was no exception. I will say that Elizabeth did a great job reeling me in when I needed it and helped me keep my focus on my children. She is level-headed and thoroughly pragmatic. I hope to not require her services in the future, but if I do I know that I have the trust and confidence in Elizabeth to look out for my best interests.

a fantastic lawyer
I highly recommed Elizabeth. Her knowledge, abilities and experience made the difference.Having Elizabeth to help get through one of the most difficult experiences of my life gave me peace of mind and comfort knowing these things too shall pass and resolve. In divorce custody challenges, I wouldn't go any where else she knows the law and will apply it appropriately to your situation for the family's best outcome. She has a passion for her work and cares about doing her best for you no matter the hurdles and hoops, she will give sound advice.
