Learn John’s areas of practice.

I grew up in Oxford MS. Went to Ole Miss as an undergraduate studying history, served in the Navy in Newport, RI, NY City and eventually Norfolk, VA where I was assigned as Gunnery Officer onboard the USS Ainsworth (FF1090). While onboard the Ainsworth traveled to Northern Europe, Scandinavia, the Mediterranean, Africa, and the Middle East. Returned to Ole Miss to law school, after which I worked for the MS Supreme Court and Federal District Court. I have practiced primarily business estate and elder law in North MS and Western Tennessee since leaving the court system in 1987. Married to Cynthia Freeland, CCRN. We have two adult children, Catherine, lives in Philadelphia, PN works for the Hepitius B Foundation and Jason is a SSGT in the Air Force. We like outdoor activities in the mountains or ocean, particularly sailing & good food. We are active in the First Presbyterian Church of Oxford, teach an adult bible study and I am a Rotarian.

integrity
I had a bad exsperience with a dealership that lied to me and tried to use the distric attorney's office in a attempt to exstort money from me. Where no other attorney would take a case such as this. I found Mr Freeland a man of great honor and integrity. He manage to keep me from being arrested and losing a great deal of money to the dealership. in a time where nothing was what it seemed and I found myself being lied to. it was refreshing to have someone who shared the same values as u share. I would recommend Hale Freeland to anyone.

We are grateful to Hale Freeland
Hale Freeland handled my father's estate. Dad had completed his will with Hale years ago and when he died I (as executor) contacted Hale to advise us on selling Dad's property and completing all remaining legal matters. Having a parent die is very difficult of course, and what I learned working with Hale is that having an empathetic, knowledgeable and committed attorney to help out makes all the difference in the world. Hale was all that and more. He has been a blessing to our family and we are grateful for his help and support.

Review
My sister and I needed some guidance regarding directions and actions to take following the recent death of our mother. Our parents had made decisions a number of years ago regarding their wishes. Having never had to deal with this type of situation, we were unsure of our responsibilities. Mr. Freeland was very helpful and gave us valuable information and direction. His advice gave us peace of mind and helped us move on. He was recommended by a friend and I would recommend him to others in our situation.

Hale was very professional and kept us updated on the progress of an estate matter. He went over and beyond his duty. He met with the session five times at the church to let us know of the progress of the estate. We were very pleased with the results and would use him again.

Integrity and Fairness
Hale Freeland recently helped me deal with one of life's unfortunate certainties - the death of my mother. As tough as everything was, I was very comforted by the fact that I had someone like Hale to deal with all the business of the estate and probate. Hale is dependable, fair, and always acts with integrity - and you absolutely cannot overstate the value of this. The billing was very reasonable and Hale and his associates at Freeland Martz were always quick to respond to my "dumb questions". I would recommend Hale to anyone thinking of doing estate planning, probate, etc. without hesitation.

The good lawyer
I have been a client of Mr. Hale Freeland long enough to have a good sense of his personal and professional integrity / constitution. I have worked with him on a variety of needs that required the expertise of a legal counselor. I have found in Mr. Freeland a very sensitive, humanitarian approach to handling my personal legal issues that at times were emotionally overwhelming for me. Mr. Freeland consistently kept me updated on the procedural process and progress of the situations and gave me a sense of confidence that he truly had my best interest at the heart of the legal matters. He gave me detailed explanations of procedures whereby at times I lacked understanding of what and how the legal process unfolds. I have found in working with Mr. Freeland that his approach is holistic, not a 'one size fits all' approach to matters relevant to my specific concerns. The initial contact with a lawyer is of utmost importance in recognizing if that person is the right person for you and has similar demeanor in approach to matters and has the competance of knowledge when encountering difficult issues that need a sensitive handling. That 'feeling' / 'evaluation' will be different for everyone, as we all have different expectations of outcomes and how we deal with difficult encounters, but that initial gut feeling about the person you will be placing your trust in should be paid attention to. I have felt that the legal issues that i have placed in Mr. Freeland's care have been handled with professional competence and sensitivity to the processes involved. Mr. Freeland cares deeply about his work and he demonstrates a selfless confidence and dignity to his profession of the law and the clients in his care.

Hale Freeland - An Exceptional Attorney
I have known John Hale Freeland for about five years. He has handled two legal issues in Mississippi for my siblings and me. The first case was a dispute regarding a parcel of land that had belonged to our father and mother and of which our uncle had bought our father's portion of the land. Actually, my uncle thought he owned all of the land, but in reality he owned half - the other half belonging to my siblings and me through inheritance from our mother. Our uncle, being convinced he owned the whole parcel, would not acknowledge otherwise. We had to resort to suing him to clear the matter. Since my siblings and I live thousands of miles from Mississippi, we looked at Martindale and chose Jphn Hale Freeland. Over the past years, we have thanked our lucky stars that we chose Mr. Freeland, and all three siblings feel that Mr. Freeland is "our hero". Over the two year span of this case, Mr. Freeland demonstrated his skills multiple times in multiple ways. His research for our case was thorough, accurate, and impeccable, and his interpretation of all the research was logical, methodical, and accurate. I really appreciated his logical thinking skills since I am an educator and logical thinking is one of the content areas in my classes, His solutions for the problems as they arose were reasonable, fair to all concerned, and were always absolutely honest and followed the law. In addition, his demeanor when obtaining a deposition from our uncle, who was quite difficult sometimes, was respectful and considerate. We really admired and appreciated that. Mr Freeland kept us informed every step of the way. In the end, we won our case and could feel that it was equitable, just, and had been done with dignity and honor throughout. At the present time, Mr. Freeland is our representative as heirs for an estate in Mississippi. Even though we are still thousands of miles away, we have no worries or concerns about our rights and obligations. We are confident that Mr. Freeland has everything in hand. Mr. Freeland has always been absolutely far above the average about communicating with my siblings and me and has been very accessible to us. I have the highest esteem and regard for Mr. Freeland, as do my siblings. I would not hesitate to recommend him and his law offices to anyone. Mr. Freeland is indeed a credit to his profession.

Complex Banking Issue
Hale Freeland and his staff have gone overboard in their attempt to solve some very complicated issues. Their knowledge, preparation and attention to detail cannot be matched. They keep you involved and value your input. Most of all, they care about their clients.

Reliable and knowledgeable
I needed someone I could trust since I don't live in Mississippi, Hale was the exact person I was looking for. He impressed me from the moment I talked to him about my case. In our conversations, he never said we "can't" or "I don't know." He was confident about my case from the very beginning and he got the job done.
