Did not listen

I met Jay at the Second Saturday Divorce Workshop. As I consulted with him on the phone, I got the impression that he was not hearing me in regards to our decisions and priorities. My husband and I are very non-contentious, have decided and agreed upon nearly everything, and anticipate a fairly drama...-free divorce. I explained this to Jay, but he disregarded or argued with our choices, and seemed to foster drama where there was none. He didn't clearly answer many of the questions that I asked, and when I told him I thought I would have to postpone our first meeting in order to talk about some things with my husband his immediate response was "well I need to get paid!". I did not end up meeting with him or signing a contract.

Many divorce clients have difficulty accepting the realities of the divorce process--which is both complex and nuanced. A few cling to these mistaken beliefs despite being told "that is not how it works". When someone steadfastly refuses to accept this reality, I tell them they will be better off finding a different attorney. I was a volunteer presenter at the Second Saturday Divorce Workshop for quite some time (during which I confronted these myths in the short time allotted). This particular person, who I remember well, insisted repeatedly on doing things that the law would not permit --which included me agreeing to meet with her husband to explain the process. When it became obvious that the lady was not happy with my advice, I ended the series of discussions by saying there was nothing more I could do for her (or her husband) since she would not listen.

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
