Our church school closed this year and a bill slipped through the cracks. Instead of calling the church and letting us know about the outstanding debt they called their lawyers. The way we found out about the lawsuit was that one of our 80 year old members got a letter offering to represent them in... the upcoming lawsuit and called me. "Make it go away." The lawsuit asked for principle, interest, and all court and attorney's fees for the plaintiff. More than this, it required my 80 year old member and an officer from the church to go to Palm Beach or face a default judgment. Needless to say it caused him a great deal of unnecessary anxiety as he didn't really have anything to do with the school operation but that is how it is when you have aggressive lawyers and unreasonable clients coming at you. We were not billed for incidentals as is typical with attorneys. More than this, because we are struggling church in a poor neighborhood, he provided an hourly accounting of the work that he did in negotiating the settlement and then provided a flat fee for his services to pay. We saved 1/3 of the total cost and it probably cost us a quarter of what a Palm Beach attorney would have charged us. On top of this he saved us thousands of dollars with a final settlement that we would pay the outstanding bill and interest only. He saved us hundreds of dollars by accepting service on our behalf. When I offered to pay the principle and interest they wouldn't even call me back but with Mr. Gunthert they agreed.
