There's life after your divorce, although it may not seem like it now.
I've been practicing family law almost 20 years. Shortly after I started practicing family law, I was trained as a Guardian ad Litem--a lawyer appointed by the court to represent the children in contested divorce cases. After handling several GAL cases I was struck by how devastated the children were by seeing their parents try to destroy each other.
I think it's possible--and preferable--to pursue your divorce in a way that doesn't hurt your children and lessens your own pain as much as possible. Every day I try to help my clients analyze the benefits of their actions, and weigh them against the costs to themselves and their children.
It takes 4 reasonable people (the 2 parties and the 2 lawyers) acting reasonably to lessen the pain and keep your kids healthy during a divorce. But it's possible to come out of a divorce in one piece. My most successful cases are those in which I can work together with my client to make sure that everyone is able to move on with their lives as seamlessly as possible.
