Divorce

I hired after Johnson when she was with the firm Ward Black. After a couple months she went into her own independent company which no one shared with me that was going to transpire, I prefer working with a firm. During consultation and our first meeting we discussed the game plan for my divorce and w...hat was in my best interest. Months down the road we meet with opposing counsel and my ex-husband and do our negotiations and everything we had talked about went down the drain. Afi was not up for the fight. I could have saved $9,000 and did that myself. I found Karla her paralegal to be rude and condescending. I would not hire her again.

Child Custody

I could not be more satisfied with my experience with Ms. Afi Johnson-Parris. As a single father dealing with custody issues, I often felt the weight of the system stacked against me. However, not only did Ms Parris help me achieve my legal goals, she educated me and helped me understand the legal ...framework (or lens) I needed to view my situation through. Many times through this journey she helped me understand the difference between legal sense and my perceived common sense. I highly recommend her (and her team) to all my family and friends.

divorce mediation

I found Afi, and her assistant Karla, to be both professional and courteous. They always returned calls or emails the same business day, Afi was well prepared for my mediation meeting and fought to negotiate the best possible deal for me.

GREAT ATTORNEY

BLUF (for those who know what it means) Afi is a great choice for an attorney. I met with Afi after being referred by one of the mothers of my daughters softball team. She explained Afi was an ethical lawyer who can fight when a fight is needed, but also is just a decent person, which is impo...rtant to me because that's how I was raised. After approximately 2 years of trying to be civil and work things out with an unreasonable ex, I met with Afi and explained my situation. I felt my situation was worse than most because of my civilian job, and military service being involved after my ex continuously made false accusations and tried to demand any and everything to be her way, "or else" according to her. Afi did a very good job navigating me though all the steps of custody and helping me remain focused to get the situation handled as quickly as possible. I'm sure Afi even questioned her sanity having to deal the ex's lawyer(s) whom one is probably the most unethical liar I have ever seen, next to the ex-wife of course. After the ex lied on the stand, under oath, her lawyer began accusing me of "violating her civil rights", and accusing me of criminal acts. Her attorney even seemed to question the credibility of Afi openly in court in regards to information which was subpoenaed as per the "conduct of court proceedings" (her attorneys words during a later encounter between he and I) in order to deflect the outright and obvious lies the ex said on the stand!!!! Throughout it all, Afi maintained her composure, and presented the FACTUAL information to show just how outlandish and idiotic the ex and her attorney's behavior was which ended up with the judge having to remind the how to conduct themselves in a court of law!! End result of that day was the Judge reminding the ex's attorney of his "ethics as a lawyer", both being seen for the liars they were, and even a conversation between the ex and the unethical attorney outside the courtroom where he told her "i'm worried about what we tried". Throughout it all, Afi remained professional conducting her self as a respectable attorney should, sticking to the facts. Afi also advised me on completing child support, equitable distribution, and divorce as my financial situation didn't really allow me to have full representation. Her advice even helped me point out lies in the equitable distribution information my ex submitted during our required mediation (The Lawyer the ex used on this one quickly requested their "supporting documentation" back from the mediator after expressing my discovery of more lies again). Afi is very professional and had to deal with more than one attorney on this matter because the ex had to swap when the lies didn't work. She is very professional even when confronted by liars making outlandish allegations, gives very good advice when you can't afford to fully use her to represent you, actually cared about the situation. I can't thank her, and her team enough for all their help. My daughter is doing so much better now!

Not Satisfied

I, too had a bad experience with this attorney. Mine was for a divorce. I was charged $300 to make an appointment to speak with an attorney (most bill you on the day of the consultation). So I pay, speak with an attorney who writes the date on a piece of paper, then advises me that it will be anot...her $495. Understandable. The initial $300 would go towards the total cost of the divorce. I WAS advised that there may be additional fees for serving my ex because of the different methods that may be required. I was fine with that. So the lawyer said that when I was ready to move forward with the divorce, give the paralegal, whose card was included in the packet a call; this person would handle everything. About a week later, I called Ward Black Law. The person who answered the phone was VERY courteous and professional. I was transferred to the paralegal, who didn't even know the attorney had my case, and who, also, was very RUDE. So, I tried calling the attorney and got no answer. So I figure, 'well... probably in court.' The paralegal calls my phone (I recognized the number after dialing it so many times), and when I answer, there is no response. I mean, I say 'hello' several times, and though the person is still on the line, the person doesn't answer. I, then, reached out to the person who called me that Tuesday to see if that person could help. NOPE! All I got was a 'paralegal tried contacting you several times (one breathing, no-response phone call amounts to several times); please contact the paralegal, as this is the person who handles these things. Thanks!' Never got my divorce through. However, I DID get a phone call a day later saying that this attorney couldn't handle my divorce because she "had too much on her schedule," something I should have been told DURING the consultation. In fact, if she was so busy, there should not even have been a consultation. So, now I'm out $300 for a consultation that led to nothing.
