THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR DIVORCE IS YOUR RECOVERY---FINANCIAL, EMOTIONAL, PHYSICAL, SOCIAL!

“The most important part of your divorce is your recovery.  Recovery means you are recovered financially, emotionally, physically, socially and spiritually---the whole person.  The joy is returned to your life, and YOU are okay.  You will be OKAY!”

Carolyn J. Woodruff JD, CPA, CVA

Carolyn uses her twenty-plus years of experience to help North Carolina family law clients realize their individual objectives in every case she takes. Carolyn’s practice emphasizes the client and their reasonable objectives.  She is experienced in business valuation in divorce, complex equitable distribution, complex custody, domestic violence, alienation of affection, alimony, grandparent’s rights, child support, and other areas of family law, such as adoption and termination of parental rights.

Many people ask, “how do you win a family law case?” This varies from client to client. Some clients are sensitive to their children’s well-being; others, sometimes with adult children, want to concentrate on their respective retirement. Some clients do not wish to leave the family home. There are also the closely held businesses amid a divorce. There are executives, or their former spouses, with deferred compensation who need help. Carolyn designs her case plan for the individual client, based on her wide background as both a family law specialist and as the only family lawyer who is both a Certified Valuation Analyst (NACVA) and a CPA.

Carolyn graduated with High Honors from Duke University School of Law after serving as Research and Managing Editor for Duke Law Review. Her legal career began with Tuggle Duggins and Meschan, P.A., where she became a shareholder and principal in only four years. While at Tuggle Duggins, she crafted a dynamic practice and tried complex cases in the United States Tax Court. At this time, equitable distribution was new in North Carolina. Carolyn consulted on various complex divorce cases and became a divorce business valuation expert, testifying across the state, in many instances, as an expert witness. Carolyn realized that she possessed a unique skillset due to being both an expert witness and a trial attorney, a skillset which qualified her to handle complex divorce cases. In 1994, she set out in her own firm as lead counsel in divorce and family law matters, forming what today is Woodruff Family Law Group. Carolyn continues her distinguished career as Woodruff Family Law Group has grown. The firm now has seven attorneys, two North Carolina Certified Paralegals, and a team of talented legal assistants.

Carolyn has also served as Chair of the Domestic Relations Tax Committee for the Tax Section of the American Bar Association. Here, Carolyn often was featured as a  national speaker, addressing topics such as corporate redemption regulations in divorce, child dependency regulations, and innocent spouse reform. Carolyn was a leader in getting the IRS to both recognize and examine domestic violence issues in relation to filing joint income tax returns. She was also vital in these domestic relations tax reforms, and due to her efforts, Carolyn became a Fellow in the American College of Tax Counsel, which requires a noteworthy contribution to United States tax policy and is a selective and esteemed national academic and think tank organization. Carolyn is the ONLY woman in the state who has been granted the position of fellow in the American College of Tax Counsel. There are currently 16 Fellows in North Carolina.

As a member of the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants (NCACPA), Carolyn has served as a trailblazing speaker in continuing education for North Carolina CPAs who need knowledge of business valuation and taxation in divorce in North Carolina. Carolyn authored two continuing ed textbooks for the NCACPA as well.  She has been an entertaining and award-winning presenter at more than 30 continuing ed programs for CPAs in North Carolina on these topics. Carolyn served for three years on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Association of CPAs, and has also served as the Piedmont Chapter President. Currently, she serves on the Symposium Committee, which hosts the largest annual continuing ed program for CPAs in North Carolina. She is also a frequent speaker at this Symposium.

Carolyn currently is leading efforts on domestic violence reform in North Carolina. The tragic and unneccessary death of Laurissa Armstrong spurred her to take an active role in seeking reforms to North Carolina domestic violence laws. She has also been a writer and spokesperson on this topic.

Carolyn’s Mission Statement:

A Caring Bulldog
We recently met with Carolyn after our daughter received notice that the father of her child was suing for custody. Our daughter had fled to NC with her child several months earlier to escape the abuse of the child’s father. Concerned with the safety of our daughter and granddaughter, we sought an attorney who would be tough, and have a clear understanding of the maze of laws surrounding custody issues. We found Carolyn Woodruff to be all that and more. During our initial meeting, Carolyn used her extensive knowledge and expertise to guide the conversation in the most productive way possible. Even after it was determined that our case would fall under the jurisdiction of another state, Carolyn followed up with e-mails containing valuable research and advice. Most of all, during a very stressful and worrisome time, Carolyn was a voice of reason and genuine caring. Our only regret is that we did not seek her services the moment our daughter and granddaughter moved to North Carolina. We would recommend her services to anyone in the Piedmont Triad area of North Carolina who needs a “caring bulldog” to fight for them in a family law matter.

They Never Miss A Beat
Our case is complicated. It involves our daughter’s custody, visitation and child support from the father of our grandchild covering multiple states and attorneys. We researched firms in North Carolina extensively to be sure the attorney we hired here would be fully capable of first understanding, and then providing accurate guidance regarding the most important priorities in our lives – our daughter and our grandchild. The team at the Woodruff Family Law Group works in full synchronization. Even during our first meeting, Carolyn Woodruff listened intently to our situation and took action to verify what we couldn’t. While we met and talked with her, she instructed her team members to verify petitions filed in other states and other facts of our case, and even contacted our attorney out of state. She was precisely clear of what she needed to know, and in what seemed like no time, her assistants were swiftly providing her additional information as she requested it. In our first hour, she not only fully understood our case, but had verified facts, and was making insightful suggestions on how to proceed. Carolyn Woodruff does more in one hour than legal teams we have worked with do in days. She is not only an incredible value due to her efficiency, but, as the results of our case will affect the rest of many of our loved ones lives, she is the best investment in our future that we could make. To provide the best legal representation, an attorney needs to be knowledgeable, caring, and above all, respected – both by those who agree with her, and oppose her. Carolyn Woodruff earns and commands respect because it is who she is and what she is committed to. We can’t possibly recommend her highly enough.

Don't Go to Court Without Carolyn and Her Team
The simplified version is this: My case was complex involving children, financial issues, infidelity on the part of my ex and other points. As a father, the safety of my children was priority number one...and as it turned out it was priority number one for Carolyn and her team as well. She never made promises or guarantees, but laid out positions, plans and strategy that in the end ultimately benefitted my children and me. I have legal and physical custody of my children along with paying no alimony to my ex. Carolyn and her whole team CARE...and that's what makes her so awesome work with and to have in your corner.

Highly recommend
“When I made the decision to file for divorce, I was very nervous and had absolutely no idea of what to expect. During my initial meeting with Carolyn and Steve, I knew I had found the best possible firm to represent me. I immediately felt comfortable explaining my situation. From the beginning, the firm eased my concerns and lowered my stress level. They analyzed my situation and put together a sound strategy to achieve the best outcome for my divorce. Words cannot describe how grateful I am to Carolyn and Steve. I never felt like my case was not a priority. Carolyn and her team were thorough and detailed oriented. I was updated every step of the way and always received a quick response to my emails and phone calls and my concerns were addressed clearly and compassionately. I fully trusted that Carolyn always had my best interest throughout the entire process. She is extremely knowledgeable of current tax laws and their implications regarding my equitable distribution and the outcome of my settlement. Carolyn negotiated the best settlement for me and I avoided having to go through court hearings. Woodruff Family Law firm treated me like family. They are sincere and trustworthy. My biggest priority was my children and how they were handling all of the changes that our family was having to deal with. It was so reassuring to know that I never had to worry about my case and I was able to give my children the attention and emotional support they needed during the difficult time. I highly recommend Carolyn and her firm.” *Pursuant to the Rules of Professional Responsibility, the results of this client under their specific facts may differ from your results under the facts of your case.

A great hire!
I am glad that I hired Carolyn for my domestic case. She was efficient, and got the job done for me. My ex was a handful. We sent the ex questions to answer. Carolyn explained every step of the way with clear communication. Steve was great as well. I would hire them again. Well worth the money.

Strategic
Carolyn Woodruff was strategic in her approach to my case. She studied the facts, and she came up with a creative solution. I cannot say enough good things about Carolyn and her staff. Her paralegal Steve was so helpful when she was not available. I highly recommend her.

Highly recommended as the best lawyers in the Greensboro area!
I spent weeks searching and interviewing attorneys in Greensboro and in all the surrounding areas looking for the most experienced take no prisoners attorneys to handle my case. The firm took on my losing case against a behemoth of a DSS agency who think they can just do whatever they want to you and your family, and they applied their professional legal expertise, and constitutional knowledge to make my wishes come true. I have absolutely no regrets in choosing and hiring the Woodruff Law Group professionals to handle my case. Carolyn & the entire Woodruff Family Law Group listened to my Family Law needs and wishes and respected me as a client. From the start they spent the necessary time to listen to my story to understand all of the underlying issues. In addition, if they had any additional questions or clarifications that were needed on my case, they would promptly contact me to keep from wasting valuable and costly billing hours that I would otherwise have to pay for, and that could better be used to properly litigate my case. As the need would arise if I had a question, or I had something on my case that needed to be immediately addressed, I was always able to reach Carolyn or any of her other staff via email or phone. Unlike my prior experience with most other law firms, I would normally get an immediate response within minutes, or within a very short timeframe once they were available to respond to me. Everyone at the firm took the necessary time to speak to me and understand my case, and in the end made me feel like a part of the Woodruff family. They continually showed me time and time again that they truly cared about me and my case. Not just that I was a number or a client. Carolyn Woodruff is an extremely intelligent litigator and is a hard worker for her clients. She is worth every single penny of her hourly rate with the amount of her expertise and her multitude of years of experience in Juvenile & Domestic & Family Law to get you the desired results that you want. I fully recommend her to anyone who is serious about protecting their family’s rights. *Pursuant to the Rules of Professional Responsibility, the results of this client under their specific facts may differ from your results under the facts of your case.

Difficult Situation, Excellent Results
My unique set of needs and circumstances were very well addressed by Carolyn Woodruff. Her knowledge of multiple facets of the law, including family, business, and tax law, made it obvious that she has been in this market for a very long time. The entire staff of Woodruff Family Law Group is extremely nice. Despite their dealings in a not real happy business, they did a good job of trying to make clients feel at ease and comfortable.

Legal Separation and Property Settlement
A friend of mine referred me to Woodruff Family Law Group, and more specifically, to Carolyn Woodruff. She was able to take my seemingly unresolvable case and find resolution in four months*. Carolyn has a comprehensive knowledge of the law, as well as strong communication strengths. When either she or Steve Coggin, one of the firm’s paralegals, said they would get something done, it got done. Ultimately, I wanted to see results and I did. Every time I entered the firm, I was greeted by name and never left waiting to be seen. I would highly recommend Carolyn Woodruff; my money was well spent on a great value, and I enjoyed the experience wholly. *Pursuant to the Rules of Professional Responsibility, the results of this client under his specific facts may differ from your results under the facts of your case.

Equitable Distribution
I came to Carolyn Woodruff with a case that had been 3+ years in the making. Yet, despite walking into a huge mess and not being able to build my file the way she may have ordinarily done it, I know that when Carolyn is handling it, there is no question the work will get done in a manner that is both efficient and timely. Carolyn is straight-forward, no-nonsense, and listens really well. Even though she is very, very smart, she is more than willing to delegate a task to other firm associates if she feels they could better serve you. Woodruff Family Law Group offers excellent hospitality and support.

A Happy Ending
I felt very confident going to the arbitration, knowing I had someone knowledgeable, capable, professional and savvy going to bat for me. Every person I dealt with at Woodruff Family Law Group was cordial, efficient and professional. When you add to that they seem to enjoy their jobs and have very caring attitudes, you have a very well run office that helped me navigate the most difficult sea I have ever encountered. I want to thank every person there for their part in seeing me through this ordeal. Though I know you were just doing your job, you listened and never forgot that among the facts and figures of divorce, there lies a broken spirit. That sounds depressing, but, hey, I've got my 'happy' back!! Things are good. My house is ready to go to market in March, the same month my first grandchild is expected!

Family Law
I came to the firm to get a divorce and divide the marital estate. During the course of our time working together, what has impressed me the most is what Carolyn Woodruff has been able to pull from the file cabinets of her memory, regarding detailed aspects of my case. Carolyn has also been a safe haven during a time of being very concerned with my well-being. When I think of Carolyn, I would say she is intelligent, quick on her feet, a quick thinker, and very friendly and warm in times of stress and duress. She has a calming effect about her. Overall, the Woodruff Family Law Group is efficient. The staff members have all become family. They offer a family environment. I have felt I could call on anyone day or night. Communication lines are always open. With the length of time my case has taken, it would have been easy to slip to the back of the firm’s caseload. That doesn’t happen at Woodruff.

Woodruff Produces
Representation from Carolyn and Taylor Daniel has been exceptional. Both attorneys value the clients input and rely on their knowledge of law, in culmination with concentration on the facts - to produce.

A strong team during difficult times.
Carolyn Woodruff, Taylor Daniel and Steve Coggin did a terrific job handling my case. Carolyn put together a well thought out and fair custody order. Taylor kept me at ease during a brief court hearing and Steve was terrific with the numbers when it came time to work out the property settlement. This is a strong team to have when it comes to family law issues.

Skilled Lawyer
When I met with Carolyn Woodruff at Woodruff Family Law Group, my goal was to obtain full custody. Carolyn was extremely knowledgeable in the legal aspects from the first meeting. She was also very responsive to emails, explaining things in a way that I could understand. Carolyn, Steve Coggin, Lauren James, Cookie Karabin and everyone… I felt like everyone was there for me if I needed something. If you need help with a family law matter, you want intelligent, capable, understanding, skilled and compassionate people to help you. You want Woodruff Family Law Group on your side.

VERY DISAPPOINTED
I hired Carolyn a long time ago. There was real estate involved and the day before my ex in-laws foreclosed on me , I received a call from Carolyn stating that she could not represent me because real estate was involved. She knew this as I had already sold 9 plots of land. After giving her a lot of money all I got in return was a foreclosure of $300,000 and my ex still living on our property for free. It took me 12 years to get back on my feet after this disaster with her and my ex. I don't know who was worse, her or him. Also I believe she didn't want to go up against a Hatfield in court. I will never forget the money I lost during this time. But I rose above all of them and have more now than I ever would with her or him on my own. Very disappointing time in my life. All I got was a box of papers with multiple duplicate copies that made them look like they were working on my case. That was a joke. By the way, I still have that box and it has been over 17 years ago. I look at it from time to time to remind me on who I can trust.

Injustice
Carolyn Woodruff worked my difficult custody case a short time. Made a great sales pitch, charged way too much and once I couldn't pay her fast enough, she abruptly quit with no notice. Left me hanging going to court to represent myself. Would not recommend her at all. Talks a good talk but is not a woman of her word. Continued to bill me after she withdrew and left me hanging. Her business manager is a nightmare to deal with, very unprofessional. Over-priced and deceptive.

Response from Carolyn Woodruff January 25, 2018
Dear Anonymous: We would like to talk to you about your concerns. Please call me at 336 272 9122 extension 3004. I can assure you that I have never withdrawn from representing a client in a custody lawsuit or any other kind of case without proper notice, a proper reason, and permission of the Judge with notice to the client and with a chance for the client to be heard. Withdrawal from representation has a very specific legal procedure to be followed, and I have always with no exceptions followed the required procedure of the Judge and the Court. What you allege is not something I have ever done. Anonymous, I would be happy to explain this further. Thanks for your consideration.
