In March of 2015 I filed a complaint with The Division of Human Rights. I was a homeless Veteran with two pet therapy animals. On 2/12/'15 my two Emotional Support cats and I reluctantly found ourselves in The Department of Homeless Services [DHS]. At first DHS told me that they could provide shel...ter for me but not my pet therapy animals. That same day I had to go and get verication from my therapist in writing that my animals provided and served a medical purpose and that they were not to be separated from me. The East 30th Street Shelter for Men allowed us into their system and then started hassassing me by telling that my cats could not stay there! I filed a Reasonable Accommodation Complaint because on the 8th day of our stay Mr. John Hammond, Program Director, denied my complaint and forced a two week separation from me and my animals until The Mayor's Alliance for NYC'S Animals advocated for me and my two cats on appeal of Mr. Hammond's decision. I went through two separate DHS Processing Hubs and finally after abuot Three weeks my pet therapy animals and I were relocated inside of DHS'S shelter at Borden Avenue Residence for Veterans. I have a spinal condition and my pets were and still are family to me. I was further harassed at Borden by staff. ANYWAY, IN MARCH 2015 I FILED MY COMPLAINT WITH THE DIVISION OF HUMAN RIGHTS. SHORTLY THEREAFTER THE DIVISION FOUND THAT PROBABLE CAUSE EXISTED AND THEY ORDERED THAT MY CASE BE HEARD AT A PUBLIC HEARING. ON 12/18/2015, I ENTERED INTO A RETAINER AGREEMENT WITH MICHAEL REDENBURG -- ATTORNEY AT LAW. TODAY, 3/28/'16, I RECEIVED MY SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT FROM THE CITY OF NY AND DHS WITH A BROAD SMILE ON MY FACE! THANK YOU, KINDLY MR. REDENBERG. YOU ARE A GREAT ATTORNEY WHO FOUGHT HARD AND FAST WITH SWIFT JUSTICE. I AM NO LONGER A HOMELESS VET AND I CAN NOW TAKE GREAT CARE OF MY PET THERAPY ANIMALS...
