Had a consultation with Joseph Hoffman for a false accusation I was being charged with. He told me it will cost over $6,000 to retain him because of the nature of the charges. I even showed him proof I had that would clearly have the case dismissed. He talked about himself the entire time and didn’t want to hear me. He went on and on about how he grew up poor and took public transportation to and from law school. I had a bad feeling about him so I hired a public defender for $150 instead. The charges were dismissed the first court date.

I just wanted to reply to your recent post. First and foremost, let me just say that I was extremely happy that the charges were dismissed. As I advised you when we met, the charges that you were facing called for a potential lengthy state prison term, and even if we were to reduce our fee down to $6,000.00, based on your financial situation, I thought you would be best served by retaining a public defender. I said that because, assuming the prosecutor and the judge were to believe you, then the charges would, in fact, be dismissed and there would be no reason for you to incur counsel fees that you were not in the position to afford. It is for this reason that I advised you that in this particular instance you would be best served to stay with the public defender. It was not because I didn’t care about you, but it is because I did. I wish you well.
