OUI - Not Guilty Verdict

I came to Nick after I had been arrested for OUI at the age of 20. I was arrested in the summer of 2015 and was set to deploy overseas within 3 months. I had no idea what to think of my situation. I had refused both a field sobriety test as well as the breathalyzer. I first contacted Nick because of ...the great reviews he had online. His expertise in the law and also his familiarity with each judge helped win my case. We ended up going with a bench trial based on his knowledge of how the judge may be with certain cases. Nick was also helpful in staying in contact with me about my case even when I was overseas. I was arrested in the summer of 2015 and received a not guilty verdict January of 2016. Safe to safe I got my moneys worth. I was given no extra fees even though my case had taken so long to resolve. Nick was flexible in how i payed him. All in all, Nick was hardworking and his experienced showed with his knowledge of the court system. I would and will recommend him to anyone in the need for a lawyer.

Nick was the right attorney for me.

I began working with Nick in winter of 2015. I had consulted a number of attorneys before deciding to go with Nick. What separated him from the others was his confidence. Not that he promised me a not-guilty verdict or a painless trial process, but that he had confidence in his ability to provid...e me the best legal counsel possible. You’d be surprised how many [top-notch] attorney’s I spoke with that seemed to lack this confidence. This confidence was important to me. How can I put my faith and my future freedom in the hands of an attorney that doesn’t even have confidence in himself?! I had been charged with DWI and this was my first offense. I declined the breathalyzer and was cooperative throughout my time taking the field sobriety tests and during booking. As a single mother to three, I was obviously eager to move forward with my life and anticipating a plea to reckless driving or some other lesser offense. Imagine my surprise when I received notice that I was being charged with Aggravated DWI just before my ALS hearing. Nick too, was surprised by this. Without using radar to clock my speed the officer included this charge based on having ‘paced’ my vehicle to the inflated speed of 70mph in a 35. I was shocked but Nick remained confident that we could get through this with a not-guilty verdict. The process was long and sometimes stressful. We knew that the circuit court judge would find me guilty but believe it or not, this was part of the plan and would allow me to appeal to the Superior Court. I would have my case heard before a jury of my peers and that was very important to me. As expected, I was found guilty and appealed to Superior Court. From beginning to end, the officer’s testimony changed from one trial to the next. Nick was sure to make this known during every opportunity he was given. He was sure to put emphasis on these inconsistencies throughout his cross-examination of the officer during each of my trials. The jurors were able to pick up on this and it definitely shook the prosecutor. My first jury trial ended in ‘mistrial’ which was certainly frustrating but better than a guilty verdict. Nick and I had decided that having me testify during this trial was not the best idea but by the time my next trial date was set and a new jury selected, we decided that my testimony might be all that is needed to get those last few jurors feeling confident in supporting a not-guilty verdict. He took the time to walk me through the testifying process and we both entered that courtroom with confidence. Nick’s examination of me and the cross-examination of the officer were both thorough and to the point. Keeping his message simple allowed the jury to process the facts without being overwhelmed by technical details that only those in the legal profession may understand. His opening and closing statements were spot-on. Reasonable doubt was all that was needed and he was able to articulate several examples of this doubt in his delivery to the jury. We were right and the jury was gone less than an hour during my second trial before returning with a not-guilty verdict. Throughout my yearlong journey to this not-guilty verdict, Nick was responsive to my calls and emails and stayed on top of my case. Making calls to the courts and filing paperwork, I know he had my best interest in mind throughout this time. I would recommend Nick to those finding themselves in this unfortunate situation. Stay positive and move forward with the peace of mind that comes along with hiring an attorney that knows what he is doing. You have so many other issues to deal with at this point—why add to it? I’m happy to have had Nick on my side. He listened to my concerns, he eased my fears. He’s a great attorney and a good human being. Choosing the right attorney was the most important decision I made after my arrest. I’m confident I chose the right attorney to represent me.

I would highly recommend Nick Howie

The service and representation which I received from Nick Howie was outstanding! I was charged with a DUI and had never had any previous problems with the law. I can honestly say I was scared of how such a serious charge would affect my life, both personally AND professionally. My case seemed to be ...a tough one and I obviously thought I would receive the worst outcome possible. I found Nick online and placed a phone call to him. He called me RIGHT back and was very responsive, calmly and thoroughly walked me through what our next steps would be and scheduled to meet with me shortly after. He answered EVERY question I had and I felt some relief knowing that I had someone with experience dealing with these cases on my side. Nick developed a strategy and fortunately, I was found innocent of the DUI charges. I can’t thank him enough and I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a very responsive, and highly knowledgeable attorney.

Not Guilty, Somerville District.

Last St. Pattys’s Day I did something pretty stupid: I thought it would be a good idea to drive into Boston after drinking. I was pulled over for speeding on 93 in Somerville, and after failing my field sobriety test, I was arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated. It didn’t hit me how bad... I had just screwed up my life until the next morning. I didn’t really know what to do, who to contact to represent me, or how much it was going to cost, so I did what any other person would do: I Googled it. I found the listing for Nick Howie, and after reading someone’s review of him, I thought he sounded like a stand-up guy. I went and met with him the following week and left his office with not only a better understanding of the procedures involved in a DWI case, but also with a huge weight off my shoulders. He was straight forward with me about our chances of beating the charges, he didn’t judge or look down on me for making a mistake, he didn’t take advantage of me when it came to his fees, he was generally a nice guy, and he was very pleasant and easy to talk to. It took a few months to resolve everything due to delays by the prosecution, but then my trial date came up and I’ll admit that I was extremely nervous. Nick was not only professional, but really knew what he was doing. If there is one thing in this world you want to see at your trial when the arresting officer is testifying, is a juror with a look of distrust on her face while shaking her head. I KNEW I was going to be ok after that. During deliberations, Nick hung out with me, we went and got a couple burgers for lunch, and when we came back we only waited about a half hour for the jury to complete their deliberations. Needless to say, I was found not guilty of the DWI and Nick was able to knock my nearly $500 speeding ticket down to $200. It was a really good day… When it comes to lawyers, Nick is one of the good ones. I’ve contacted him a couple times since then and I can always get ahold of him and he always sounds genuinely pleased to hear from me. If ever I’m in a situation where an attorney is required, I will never hesitate to trust Nick.

"I had the recent opprotunity to watch Attorney Howie conduct a trial in the Salem District Court. He was highly prepared, and presented an effective and well-thought-out legal defense on behalf of his client. The result of the trial included multiple entries of not guilty verdicts that I believe were obtained due to Attorney Howie's skill, preparation, and effective use of cross-examination."
