About Matthew
Biography
Matthew T. Marin is the founding partner of Marin & Murphy Law Firm and a Rhode Island criminal defense and DUI attorney whose litigation has shaped state DUI law. In State v. Zimmerman, his challenge to Rhode Island's DUI "Rights for Motorists" form led the Attorney General's Office to revise it statewide. In State v. Corcoran, a suppression motion he won at the Superior Court level became the foundation for a Rhode Island Supreme Court ruling on when roadside DUI questioning requires Miranda warnings.
He founded the firm in 2008 and has spent 17 years building one of Rhode Island's most established criminal defense practices. Over that span he has handled more than 2,500 DUI cases across every Rhode Island county, with results that include numerous breath-test suppressions and not-guilty verdicts in District and Superior Court. The firm holds a 5.0 rating across all locations on 444 Google reviews.
Attorney Marin has been selected to Super Lawyers for 11 consecutive years (Rising Star 2014–2018, Super Lawyers 2019–2024), holds an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell, and has been named to the National Trial Lawyers Top 100.
Before founding the firm, he worked on the prosecution side as a Rule 9 student attorney with the Rhode Island Department of Attorney General, representing the State in probation and bail violation hearings and prosecuting breathalyzer refusal cases at the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal. He approaches each case by working through how the State will build it, then identifying the constitutional and evidentiary weaknesses. He has also instructed recruits at the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy on DUI enforcement and presented to the Rhode Island District Court Prosecutors Association.
His practice covers DUI and chemical test refusal defense, domestic violence, drug and felony charges, assault, sex crimes, probation violations, expungement, and federal criminal defense in the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island. He is admitted in Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, and holds a J.D. from Roger Williams University School of Law, an M.B.A. from the University of Rhode Island, and a B.S. from Clark University.
