After being confronted with a legal matter, I spend several days researching attorneys and finally choose Jonathan Katz. My reasons were simple: I wanted results!!! During this recent ordeal, Jonathan Katz has shown me why he is called a “Warrior for Justice”. Mr. Katz NEVER stops fighting for his clients. Jon Katz is an excellent attorney. I did something very foolish and was charged with a career ending felony. Through hard work and diligence Mr Katz got the charges reduced to a misdemeanor. I believe this was the first time the prosecutor agreed to a misdemanor plea for this type of case.
Getting arrested puts one in a vulnerable situation: it is difficult to trust your future to an attorney you have just met. Jon Katz cares about his clients, he is ethical, diligent and hard working. He is also very honest when it comes to money. I was somewhat of a difficult and demanding client, and Mr Katz showed me nothing but patience and respect. A client should be thicked skinned when seeing Mr Katz for the first time. In my experience, he used F-bombs and carried himself in a manner that extinguished any hope I had to make a case. After I was visibly shaken, he did tone himself down and became receptive to what I had to say. He took my case and there were a few instances, in accordance with our contract, he would threaten to drop me over unexpected events or failure to contact him in a timely manner [which was the fault of his staff not getting him the message on time]. He blamed his staff for a couple of mismanaged incidents. In addition, during meetings, Mr Katz is very aware of time that's spent with him. So much so, it's a distraction to the meetings. Lastly, the final bill that was verbally stated turned out to be different than the final itemization. I write this criticism because Mr Katz boasts a 10.0 AVVO rating on his website and this is simply not the case. I compare him to my experience with a divorce attorney and it just may be a simple fact that you can't compare a family attorney to a criminal defense attorney. Be prepared for an abrasive experience.

Lawyer's Comment: My staff and I strive to provide clients the best service in every respect. Even one dissatisfied client is one too many. Due to client confidentiality and discretion, I would prefer to reply directly and privately to the commenter. However, I do not know who the commenter is -- which extinguishes confidentiality issues -- and make the following brief observations:
- If I spoke four-letter words with the commenter, it likely was in the context of commiserating with his or her plight. See: http://katzjustice.com/underdog/archives/596-I-like-when-you-swear.
- The commenter seems to say s/he was dissatisfied with our first meeting, but still hired me despite having countless other lawyers to choose from. How does that jibe?
- A lawyer and client do not join forces intending on weakening their ability to help each other through non-communication. It is rare for me even to need to bring up the matter with clients.
- My staff has blessed me and my clients over and over again. It is curious that the commenter puts down my staff, and then says I put down my staff, too, as if s/he and I were in cahoots against my staff that I stand behind 100%.
- The poster seems to be addressing hourly work for a non-criminal case; the vast majority of my work is flat-fee criminal work. If the work was hourly non-criminal work, it should have been easy for the poster to hire a replacement lawyer at any time if s/he was dissatisfied.
- I do not know whether the poster's main axe to grind is being billed for my time, As the 1970's New York City Opera commercial went "We can't live on love alone." The poster confirms s/he had a contract from me, so it is not clear why s/he mentions a verbal bill.

- I appreciate the commenter's acknowledging that s/he is comparing me to a divorce lawyer. One of the very reasons I stayed away from divorce law and the rest of family law is the highly-charged emotions involved that makes criminal defense seem to be a cakewalk.
- When a lawyer accepts a new client, the lawyer can only try to work as best as possible with the hand that has been dealt the client., while also trying to alter the rules of the game within the bounds of ethics and the law. I am honest to clients that I will go to the mat for them, but that I do not have any magic dust to sprinkle on their case.

Jon Katz is a great lawyer. I had a 2nd DUI case and was really stressed. He puts things in prospective and gives you alot of things that can help you with the case. Jon provided me with everything I was hoping for in a lawyer. He was able to get all my charges dropped with exception of the Failure to Maintain Control, and was able to get a very low penalty of $100--a very good outcome. This was a true learning experience for me, and I will NEVER make the same mistake again. It was great to have an experienced and knowledgeable lawyer such as Jon to take care of everything. I highly recommend Jon to anyone facing a DUI/DWI case, as he will treat you with the dignity you deserve, and ease all of the stress involved with a criminal charge. Katz won me an acquittal in the 15 minute trial by establishing that the officer lacked probable cause to pull me over. I was referred to Jon Katz by a family friend and it certainly paid off. I was up for a first offense DUI and was expecting to get a PBJ but Jon wanted to fight it. From the moment Jon entered the court room I could tell he had a powerful presence, one that was noticed by both myself, and the prosecutor. Jon waited the long 6 hours with me until my trial time finally came. During that wait he offered a lot of comfort and lightened the mood with this humor. Right before my trial started Jon talked with the prosecutor and got us a plea bargain where the DUI charges were dropped and amended to a mere negligent driving charge. I got PBJ for a far less, nonjailable offense which only had the terms of 24 hours of community service! On top of that, we completely avoided a long trial!! GREAT results and only possible due to Jon's reputation and powerful attitude. I highly recommend him.

I had court with Jon as my representation today. I had a miserable driving record, and was charged with yet another Reckless Driving offense (number 3). Intially, the Commonwealth Attorney (in VA, they are not called a DA or Prosecutor....but same thing), would not offer a plea bargain. Jon was like a bird dog, got the plea I wanted, and I left with a traffic infraction (instead of a misdemeanor criminal offense), a much lesser fine, no restrictions on my driving. All MUCH better than the 1-year in jail that I could have faced if we had gone to trial. Jon also counseled me on what I could do proactively to mitigate my risk of an unfavorable outcome (he had me complete several driving courses, do community service, get my speedometer checked, and visit a psychiatrist). I have to credit Jon for saving my butt - literally - had I gone to jail, my job, my family's welfare, and my reputation. He's expensive, but worth every penny. By the way - he's never been a prosecutor...which means he's on the side of justice....not the side of the state. He's also very responsive (usually thru is full time assistant), and allowed me to talk with him whenever I liked....as long as I gave notice and worked with his schedule.

He is an expert on civil rights as shows in his fascinating daily blog. It is worth reading for lawyers and laymen alike. My experience with Jon Katz was phenomenal. As a corporate professional, a severe lack in judgement cost me my job and twelve felony counts in February 2008. I felt my life was over until I met with Jon. I was devastated and humbled when I sat down with Jon. When I was arrested for a DWI in Washington, DC, I was petrified. Between the fear of going through the court system for the first time, the stress of figuring out how to pull myself out of the situation I put myself in, and the shame I felt for even being in this kind of mess, I really wanted to find a good lawyer. Well, I did one better and found a great lawyer in Jonathan Katz.
His advice was spot on, he was always so well prepared, and he gave me my dignity back by outlining exactly what steps I needed to take in order to rectify my situation. My one request, that I not do jail time, was singular but difficult to attain considering my circumstances. He was able to fulfill my request, and he did so while holding onto his scruples. Extremely intelligent, effective, and very experienced, I recommend Jonathan Katz without reservation. This means quite a bit coming from me, because I have high expectations of myself and those around me. I had an issue with with the local government impounding my car and keeping it unlawfully for a very extended period of time. Mr. Katz was responsive, diligent and hard nosed. These qualities plus his tenacity resulted in my property being returned to me far faster than i would have obtained alone. i was floundering as to what to do. Once I contacted Mr. Katz, I felt much more in control and was extremely pleased with the results.
