If you are looking for a detail oriented amazing lawyer then look no further. Jon Katz successfully defended me from a felony cannabis charge which would have had me in jail for 5 years. He literally went over every detail with a fine tooth comb until he found the flaw in the prosecutions case. Which took running all over interviewing the 20 some officers involved in my arrest as well as lab employees who had processed evidence. He eventually bargained a deal which dropped the charge down to a misdemeanor, kept me out of prison and from losing my job. If relentless is what you need then Jon Katz is definitely your lawyer.

I was referred to Counsel Katz by my lawyer which is an awesome lawyer3, but my problem was so deep that my lawyer felt I would better served by some one like Counsel Katz. Mr. Katz is a gifted defense attorney. He has my highest recommendation to be your defense attorney. He represented me twice, in VA and MD courts, twice for charges with more than a year jail time possible, and obtained better than I expected results. He lived up to his reputation (according to my former attorney who recommended him) as the go-to lawyer for difficult cases.

The first time it might have been luck or a lenient court, but the second time he also obtained superior results. He works hard, pays meticulous attention to the details to prepares his arguments well covering all the bases with what he has. Possibly more important is that he thinks very fast on his feet, and has a smooth, compelling, charismatic court presence. Based on more than 15 years of daily work experience with (and for, in several instances) many lawyers at all levels - including top grads from top schools, top clerks at all levels, work on my cases with several defense attorneys, and personal acquaintances with lawyers at all levels, he is on par with the best in the legal profession, and heads and shoulders above his peers.

Back in June I was pulled over for DWI in Fairfax, then the next day after my arrest I was pulled over and was given a ticket to show up in Arlington since I was driving on a suspended license due to the DWI the night before, I didn't know it was suspended for 7 days, so now I had two court dates to go to, one for DWI and one for driving on a suspended license. It was a mess, I started calling around for a good attorney, I called some and visited one and I just didn’t feel right about them and they were pushy, then luckily I found this site and I read Jon's reviews, at first I thought maybe the reviews were posted by his friends or people working for him since he had a perfect score on the site. So I did some research on him and decided to make an appointment with him. I went to his office in Tysons and once I sat down with him, I felt at ease and his sense of humor made me more relax about my situation.
So I decide to hire him, he is more expensive than others but what he did for me I doubt no other lawyers could have done. The case in Arlington, where I was looking at 3 months suspension of my license and possibly a week or two in jail, this could have been the deal breaker for me, l could have lost my job. He went to court and went to battle, prosecutor didn’t want to give any deal so he told him then we will go to trail, as we were getting ready for trial, the prosecutor came decided to give us a deal,
a weekend in jail and 30 days suspension of my license, we agreed to it but Jon noticed there was an error and went back to the prosecutor and he came back with an even better deal, 7 days suspension and a weekend in jail so I didn’t have to miss work. It was a lot better than 90 days suspension and 1 or 2 weeks in jail!
The court in Fairfax, I was looking at 1 year restricted license plus having DWI showing on my record.
The prosecutor didn’t want to bargain so we went to trial with this one, once again he went in and just nailed the prosecutor and the cop and we came out with only 30 days restricted license and reckless instead of DWI. Jon had the prosecutor and the Judge figured out even before we went to trial, I was a little nervous but I knew I was in good hands since I already seen what he did in Arlington.
I do remember Jon telling me while we were sitting outside the court in Fairfax, when I first came to his office with both of my cases he was close to now taking on the cases since my case was a wimpy one and it wasn’t really a challenge for him and now I know why.
The guy is a magician in the court room with a great sense of humor!
I’m never going to get myself in the situation I got myself into, but if I ever do I know I will be calling Jon,
I will also be recommending him to anyone that has a similar situation as me.

Jon did an awesome job for me!! my case was simple DUI but my situation was so complicated. I am not American, got arrested during a short visit here in D.C, missed my court dates since I couldn't stay longer for my first court appearance because I was scheduled to return to my home country. So I ended up completely missing my court dates and was unable to return to the U.S. It was such a complicated situation for me and I didn't know how to fix everything, so I started to look for a lawyer. First thing that lead me to Jon is that he speaks more than one language. At first he seemed a little unsympathetic to me, but I realized he was only being objective and looking at my situation how the court would look at me. So there was no misunderstanding on my end of what I was dealing with, which could have had a very bad ending for me. Jon introduced me to another immigration lawyer that handled me being able to get back to the u.s. without being stopped at customs and going to jail. Than once I was here, Jon scheduled all of my court hearings and used all of the advantages possible to help with my case. He made sure the court treated me fairly and that they fulfilled all of there responsibilities to me as a defendant without any hardship for me. He knows how to exploit any holes in the case the prosecutor has, and also knows how to take your situation to higher levels of appeal or put in requests that are above the courts level. For the most part the court never wants to mess with the paperwork, so it helps get what we want to happen to benefit me. He even picked me up and dropped me off at my house one time for one of the court hearings because had transportation problems. It was nice not having to coordinate all of the aspects of my case after I retained Jon. He even got a court appointed interpreter for me free of charge even though my English is good. But it helped cause than I didn't have to talk much, and they left all the questions to Jon. So to put a long story short, I had a warrant for my arrest for failure to appear, A DUI charge, and i was looking at a possible year in jail, alcohol program classes, and many fines. After Jon's help, I was given no jail time, no alcohol classes, my warrant was dismissed, and I only had to pay less than $600 fine and 3 years unsupervised probation. Before Having Jon as my lawyer, I was overwhelmed and felt like I was stuck in a black box trying to find my way out. He helped me get out of that situation so I could move on with my life!!! Thanks again Jon.. you have no idea how much I appreciate everything you did for me.

I first found out about Jon Katz through a google search for lawyers near Maryland. I came across his website, checked out his blog, and looked at his AVVO reviews. I was a bit skeptical that it seemed like everyone in here was giving him an extremely high rating. I made an appointment with him, felt comfortable and decided to hire him for my possession of marijuana charge. I have major depression and generalized anxiety disorders and was using marijuana for self medication. I had always thought that the medical marijuana defense legislation from 2003 was only for people with certain conditions but Jon made it clear that persuing a sentence for my mood disorders was possible; something that i feel that other lawyers wouldn't be willing to do. There were times where i questioned doing this because i was afraid that the outcome wouldn't be pretty, but Jon kept my spirit up and gave me the confidence that it could be done. He can be tough at times, and he will have you doing everything that you can possibly do to prepare for court, but trust me you want to do everything you can possibly do to show the judge that you have remorse for your actions, and that you are taking the situation seriously.
Jon responded to my e-mails, he has a very good assistant that is patient and willing to help, and i was able to schedule a meeting with him everytime i tried within a week of when i called. He is very personable and understanding but at the same time will let you know if you are doing something wrong for your own good (kind of a tough love). The day of my court date he negotiated hard with the prosecuter, kept me calm, discussed my options with me, and we ended up getting what i wanted which was the medical marijuana sentence. He was indeed "calm in the eye of the storm" and articulated my situation to the judge in a very intelligent and intuitive manner. After court he notified of a new legislation that is waiting to be signed that allows medical marijuana patients in maryland who provide sufficient proof that their use was medically neccessary to be found not guilty. He expressed a possibility that this could apply to me if the ammenment was retroactive somehow so i am going to research and try to figure out if it could apply to my case (the previous legislation from 2003 allowed me to get the charge on my record and the new one says i am not guilty). If i do figure something out and am going to try to get it corrected I am going to contact Jon Katz to represent me again. Thanks Jon,

I was stopped for speeding 21mph over the limit in Northern Virginia, which is Class 1 Misdemeanor if convicted. Jon fought hard to reduce my charges to a choice between improper driving (19mph over limit + fine + points) or speeding 9mph over limit + higher fine + points. He then suggested that I accept the speeding charge (which I did), clearly pointed out that the points would not carry over to my Maryland driving record, and he was right!

Jon represented me for a shoplifting case (less than $100), and because of him, I am able to come out with a victory. At that time, I first went to interview with another lawyer, I was immediately disappointed, since he is the type of lawyer later on I saw many in the courtroom, who finished the case in less than 10 minutes by somehow convincing you to take whatever comes down.

I was charged with DUI, trespassing, and refusal to submit to a breathalyzer on federal property. After searching online and conducting interviews via the telephone, Atty Katz seemed to be the best choice. After working with him the past 3.5 months, I can tell you that it was the best decision I could have made. Since I am in the military and wanted resolution quickly, I wanted a plea that would enable me to continue serving honorably; I got just that. I walked away with full driving privileges, alcohol safety course and a $300 fine! I pled to the refusal, but I am now on my way to paying my debt to society for my carelessness and am a step closer to putting all this behind me. Jon also gave me a a substantial portion of my fee back because my case was settled so quickly!

Anyone with any kind of case Jon covers...HIRE HIM! This guy is knowledgeable, a master in the courtroom, intelligent and tolerant (I have a mother who is very difficult to deal with) and he even dealt with her, sometimes better than I do! My drug possession case, which I was concerned with for over a year, ended in a Nolle Prosequi (no prosecute), and only because I listened to Jon's preparatory advice before the trial and when in the first trial before my continuance, Jon advised me to reject the prosecution's bum offer when they weren't prepared. Which gave me more time to prepare a better case! I would have had a record if I had accepted the offer that may have affected my future educational opportunities, and thanks to Jon, that is no longer a problem. He is brilliant in the courtroom, fears NO PROSECUTOR, and will fight for you to the very end for the best verdict possible. I am a person with anxiety and depression issues, and his humor and drive helped me to feel much more relaxed in and out of the courtroom. Furthermore, he will be completely honest with you about your situation and the possibilities, even if they aren't pleasant. And to be frank, there are lots of lawyers out there charging far more for less quality work. I also had a DUI case and as expensive as she was, the service was crap. Jon Katz respresented me in a criminal charge resulting from a pending divorce. The complainant orchestrated a vicious campaign of revenge not only by filing a criminal complaint, but also with family members, my employment and elsewhere. During the course of the case, the complainant inflated the circumstances and lied to the prosecutor. Jon was unrelenting in his approach, and thorough in his preparation. I pretty much had an easy 2nd dui case for the prosecution, but Jon did his best to fight it to the last second. Instead of 25 days, I did 20 (and that too in the pre release center which is a lot more relaxed than the main jail) and I got to break my sentence into 2 ten day terms separated by a month. And this was all because of Jon's skills in the court room! And after the year suspension was over, Jon was so very helpful and got my restricted license!

In July 2009 I was charged with 2nd degree assault and false imprisonment. I was facing a harsh outcome that would ruin my career and life. Thanks to Mr Katz's help I can relax again. He was able to have the judge drop the false imprisonment and lower the assault to a much lesser charge with 1 year of unsupervised probation and no jail time! The victim wanted an outrageous amount of restitution payments and Mr. Katz helped me get away paying a fraction (fair amount) of what the victim wanted. Jon, Thank you for the excellent effort on my behalf. Though we were not successful against the lies of the illiterate county deputy and deceitful commonwealth attorney in defending the refusal, which is near impossible in VA; you were quite successful with the more serious charge of the DUI being determined as NOT GUILTY.

In addition, if you had not been representing me, I am convinced that the commonwealth attorney's attempt to have me charged with a Felony, based on false testimony of the sheriff's deputy to the Grand Jury, may have been successful if left up to the local good old boys and girls of the county. But thanks to your awareness of the attempt and representation the indictment mysteriously changed from indicted to not indicted without explanation from the county officials. I don't imagine the potential for a law suit for Malicious Prosecution had anything to do with their decision not to pursue the false allegations.

In my opinion, though a serious issue warranting laws that protect the public at large, the law in Virginia has gone too far regarding DUI. It appears that a person is now guilty until proven innocent in the Old Dominion and is subject to whatever abuse of authority an officer and commonwealth attorney want to levy against an accused. The cop is not even required to articulate what he is reading to a person in a manner that a person can make an informed decision. My impression is that the only reason that King George County deputy is in his job is because there was no opening for which he could qualify in collecting trash. You made it obvious why the Deputy Commonwealth Attorney works for the county; she couldn't do the job well enough to be successful in private practice. She was successful only due to luck and corruption in the local system that is perceived or well known in the county.

I appreciate your honoring your advertised word in providing me quality representation at a cost affordable in consideration of the market. Compared to what it could have cost me, you were very fairly priced.

I hope not to need such services again, but if I am so unfortunate as to need an attorney I will not hesitate to call you again for the job!

Jon repesented me in two CDS posossion cases one in Marlyand and recently one in Virginia. I got favorable outcomes in both case a non-prosecution stet-doc on one case and a a dismisal on the other case.

Jon was a great lawyer from the start. He got straight to business and even though he can seem harsh at times he does it for your benefit. He knows what he is doing since he has been practicing law around the area for 20+ years... He is comfortable with the surrounding court systems and the personnel within them which helps when it comes to the court date. Also, whenever you had a question he would respond right away and would give you an itinerary for what is going to happen at court (or the prelim trial).

The last thing I ever thought to happen to me would be arrested for a DWI with a high BAC. My son is an attorney out-of-state and did some quick, but intensive research and recommended Mr. Katz. Mr. Katz made himself available the very next day, though I could see how busy he is. I was impressed immediately with his manner, knowledge and professionalism. He managed to reinstill the self dignity that I felt was lost for at least a while. The two-month wait until trial date seemed like an eternity, but Mr. Katz checked in regularly and helped me arrange helpful and important activities to help my case. I was terrified of jail time and losing my license, but he worked skillfully with the prosecutor.
Because of him I avoided jail time and am driving with a restricted license. The greatest strengths I found in Mr. Katz were his experience, his ease of working through procedure and possibly most important, his dedication to the client. He is an attorney who truly cares and as he said to me once when I remarked that I knew he had another client calling soon, "My only client is the one I'm talking to now".

I did not think that a judge would consider rescheduling the court date so I told Jon to forget about it. At that point he asked me: "Do you have a lot of quit in you?" I realized he was right, showed up in court with him the next day, and had my court-date rescheduled (was able to move, much to the relief of my girlfriend). Eventually I was found not-guilty of a .088 DUI. You want this guy in your corner because he gets sincere pleasure from being right. Jon has a tough personality- in and out of court. He will fight for you, with killer instincts. Jon gracefully navigated our way through the legal system. He identified weaknesses in the case, and attacked those weaknesses like a dog. What threatened to take over and ruin my reputation was successfully handled by Jon because of his knowledge of the court system, and his unending commitment to puncture holes in the case. A client should be thicked skinned when seeing Mr Katz for the first time. In my experience, he used F-bombs and carried himself in a manner that extinguished any hope I had to make a case. After I was visibly shaken, he did tone himself down and became receptive to what I had to say. He took my case and there were a few instances, in accordance with our contract, he would threaten to drop me over unexpected events or failure to contact him in a timely manner [which was the fault of his staff not getting him the message on time]. He blamed his staff for a couple of mismanaged incidents. In addition, during meetings, Mr Katz is very aware of time that's spent with him. So much so, it's a distraction to the meetings. Lastly, the final bill that was verbally stated turned out to be different than the final itemization. I write this criticism because Mr Katz boasts a 10.0 AVVO rating on his website and this is simply not the case. I compare him to my experience with a divorce attorney and it just may be a simple fact that you can't compare a family attorney to a criminal defense attorney. Be prepared for an abrasive experience.

I was referred to Jon Katz by a family friend and it certainly paid off. I was up for a first offense DUI and was expecting to get a PBJ but Jon wanted to fight it. I had court with Jon as my representation today. I had a miserable driving record, and was charged with yet another Reckless Driving offense (number 3). Intially, the Commonwealth Attorney (in VA, they are not called a DA or Prosecutor....but same thing), would not offer a plea bargain. Jon was like a bird dog, got the plea I wanted, and I left with a traffic infraction (instead of a misdemeanor criminal offense), a much lesser fine, no restrictions on my driving. All MUCH better than the 1-year in jail that I could have faced if we had gone to trial. Jon also counseled me on what I could do proactively to mitigate my risk of an unfavorable outcome (he had me complete several driving courses, do community service, get my speedometer checked, and visit a psychiatrist).
