I am an attorney licensed to practice law in Maryland and in the District of Columbia. I have offices located in downtown Baltimore, Catonsville, and in Columbia, Maryland. My practice areas include criminal defense, family law, estate planning, and civil litigation. I am a member of multiple local bar associations and the Maryland Criminal Defense Attorney's Association. Above all else, I am committed to putting my clients at the center of my law practice.
I began my legal career as an attorney with the Maryland Office of the Public Defender in Baltimore, Maryland. As an Assistant Public Defender I spent thousands of hours in court defending criminal cases involving drugs, theft, assault, weapons, and serious traffic violations. There I gained a good knowledge of Maryland criminal law, evidence rules, and the U.S. and Maryland Constitutions. Unlike many of my peers in private practice who began their legal careers as prosecutors, I have never handled a criminal case where my client’s personal freedom or property was not at stake.
Prior to law school, I received my Bachelor of Arts degree at St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland. There I completed the school’s four-year Great Books Program, a course of study that uses only primary sources and roughly equals a double major in Philosophy and History of Math. My pre-law work experience included working as a technology consultant to the advertising industry in San Francisco and teaching English as a foreign langugae in Surin, Thailand.
Please do not hesitate to contact my office at if you need assitance. New client case evaluations and consultations are free of charge and involve no obligation.

A +++++++ Lawyer
Mr. Baum was extremely professional and proved himself to be so knowledgeable in working my case. He also kept me well-informed about what he was doing and what his strategy was. Maybe most impressive was that he didn't talk to me in legal jargon that someone untrained in law wouldn't easily understa...
"Matt and I were co-workers and he has represented co-defendants in cases where I am also representing someone. I have sent him cases and will do so in the future. I call him for advice and trust him completely. He is knowledgeable and clever. Many of the endorsements on AVVO are by attorneys who actually don't even know the person they are endorsing. Look on other attorneys' pages and you will see that they are being endorsed by people in other states and other fields of law. That is merely a trick to get a higher rating. This endorsement is not a trick. I know Matt Baum, I have seen him try dozens of cases with my own eyes. He is a great lawyer."
"Matthew Baum is an extremely intelligent, creative and knowledgeable lawyer. He is the guy that many of us turn to with the tough legal question, or when we need an "out of the box" take on a case. I highly recommend him."
"Matt knows criminal law inside and out. I would not hesitate to refer any client to him who found themselves on the wrong side of the law in Maryland or D.C. Matt makes sure that his clients get the representation they deserve."
