For over ten years I have practiced as a criminal defense attorney in Washington State. My practice was focused on DUI & misdemeanor Domestic Violence cases from 2006 to 2010. From 2010 to 2015, I focused my practice to felony cases, including Class A violent offenses, strike offenses, and other serious charges. While in law school, I clerked at the local district attorney's office and prosecuted DUI cases. From 2006 to 2010, most of my cases were DUI or other misdemeanors. I have represented client charged with felony DUI, vehicular assault, and vehicular homicide. I represented a client on his 13th DUI and secured a sentence to the mandatory minimums, and exceptional result in Thurston County District Court,

Alex Frix has been practicing law as a public defender since 2006. He is currently the Director of the San Juan County Public Defender's Office, located in Friday Harbor, the county seat in the beautiful San Juan Islands of Washington State.

He has represented over a thousand clients in jury trials, motion hearings, pretrial hearings, and post-sentencing hearings. He only represents indigent people who qualify to have a public defender defend their constitutional rights in court.

In 2009, Alex worked with local judges, prosecutors, social workers, and the Washington State Department of Veterans affairs to create the first Veterans Court in the Pacific Northwest.

Alex was born into a military family and went to the University of Washington where he studied marketing and entrepreneurship. He later went to the University of Oregon Law School, where he was President of the local chapter of the American Constitution Society and a charter member of the Oregon Innocence Project.  While still in law school, he worked for the Lane County District Attorney's Office in Eugene, Oregon as a law clerk, where he prosecuted cases including DUI and drug possession.

For his work in Veterans Court, Alex has received awards from the Thurston County Board of Commissioners, the Washington Defender Association, the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs, the Governor's Veterans Affairs Advisory Committe, and the Washington State Bar Association. In 2014, he received the Disintinguish Young Alumnus Award from the University of Oregon School of Law.

Alex enjoys seakayaking, hiking, and computers. He is passionate about Veterans issues.

True professional!
Mr Frix was court appointed and was nothing but amazing from the get go. He reviewed the information, noted serious holes in the case from the state and got to work immediately to gather the evidence to prove my innocence. After all evidence had been collected, he got the erroneous charges against me dismissed. Even after my case was dismissed, he followed up with me from time to time to check on me. I can't thank him enough.

A Great Lawyer!
Alex was appointed to represent me in a case in the past about 2-3 years ago and that moment when I thought my life was over, this dedicated and determined lawyer gave me hope again and saved my life from being over! It was one of the lowest moments in my life and words cannot express how grateful I am to have met such an amazing person/lawyer like Alex to fight for me and got my case dismissed. He is dedicated and passionate about his job as a defense attorney and very understanding and goes above and beyond to do everything he could to help. He is good at following up with his clients and checking on them to make sure they are doing good; even after my case was dismissed. He cares and it shows in the work that he does as a defense attorney! Thank you Alex, I am forever grateful for everything that you have done for me!

Best Lawyer I Have Ever Had.
My issue is still in progress, however I have 100% Trust and Confidence in his ability to do his Job.
Response from Alexander Frix February 26, 2014
This client's case resolved with the prosecutor agreeing to refer his case to the Friendship Diversion Program. If the client completes the program, his felony charges will be dismissed. I have every confidence this client will be successful in the Friendship Diversion Program. It was an honor to represent him and I wish him luck.

"Mr. Frix is an attorney who has earned the respect of not just attorneys, but judicial officers as well. His personal commitment to his practice is above reproach. Mr. Frix is devoted to his clients and community, and he uses his vast knowledge and experience to advance his clients' interests and advance the interests of the community in general. He has also taken his personal time to assist and mentor less experienced attorneys on matters concerning criminal law and the intersection of the criminal justice system and poverty."

"Alex Frix demonstrates a style and competence that evokes the archetypal "Super Lawyer" model, and I have improved my own practice greatly by observing his work. Alex has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the law, and his opinion and perspective are widely regarded in the criminal defense community. Despite his expertise, Alex is a straight-forward and no-nonsense attorney who works incredibly hard for his clients. His dedication and willingness to pull long, sometimes thankless hours are perhaps his most commendable qualities. I strongly endorse Mr. Alex Frix."

"I heartily endorse this lawyer. I don't know Alex well personally, but I do know his work. He is a regular contributor to the WACDL List Serves, where lawyers of all stripes seek and provide advice. Alex is always there with speedy, intelligent and thoughtful input, often assisting older, more experienced lawyers with his fresh, well-informed insights. Alex also clearly demonstrates that commitment and hard work are the cornerstones to achieving success as a criminal defense attorney. Most significantly for his clients, Alex proves every day that public defenders can be at least as skilled as (if not more skilled than) many members of the private bar. His clients don't need to worry about the cliche "public pretender" (a term I hate). Alex isn't pretending; he is very much for real. I wish him all the best."

Criminal defense Attorney | Aug 07
Relationship: Worked together on matter
"Alex and I have represented several clients in common because they have matters pending different courts. He has always gone the extra mile to ensure the best possible results in every situation. His trial advocacy is second to none. He has a keen ability to quickly but thoroughly parse through discovery to uncover obscure issues that would make any prosecutor take a second, much longer look at his/her case. Furthermore, Alex has pioneered the Veteran's Court in Thurston County which has already served many of our country's veterans. His concern for our veterans in particular is obvious and he works relentlessly on their behalf. Alex will serve you well."
