Case Conclusion Date: 02.10.2017
Practice Area: Criminal defense
Outcome: Hung Jury & Mistrial
Description: Client charged with Rape in the Second Degree (4 Counts) under RCW 9A.44.050, Indecent Liberties under RCW 9A.44.100 and Unlawful Imprisonment under RCW 9A.40.040. The allegations were a combination of Class A and Class C felonies punishable to a maximum sentence of 5-20 years life in prison on each count. Making matters worse, sex offenses "triple" an offender's score under RCW 9.94A.525. With that, Client faced life in prison if he was convicted of the offenses. For a number of years, Client allegedly met different women at local bars, took them to his home and sexually assaulted them by forcible compulsion or lack of consent due to their intoxication. Eventually, the different alleged victims communicated online, formed a secret/closed Facebook group, and colluded their stories with each other before reporting to police. Mr. Ransom argued numerous pretrial motions to dismiss charges and suppress evidence. At trial, the court dismissed one rape charge due to insufficient evidence. Ultimately, the jury deliberated for 4 days before deciding they could not reach verdicts on any charges. The judge declared a mistrial.
