Peter D. Haroldson has been serving Washington families since 2004. His practice emphasizes family law, guardianship, probate and estate planning. He has represented clients in Pierce, King, Thurston, Kitsap, Snohomish, and Skagit County.

Peter represents civilian and military parents in all manner of domestic relations, including divorce, child custody, paternity, parentage, third-party custody, non-parental custody, and relocation.

Peter also has extensive experience representing certified professional guardians and family guardians in court-created guardianships under RCW 11.88. Peter is qualified as a court-appointed guardian ad litem in RCW Title 11 (probate/guardianship/trust) cases. He has handled cases involving elder abuse and protection of vulnerable adults. Peter is also available to consult with and assist residential care facilities, nursing homes and adult family homes in guardianship proceedings for their residents.

Peter believes that a basic estate plan is an important tool that every family should have, not just the “1 percent”. Simple wills, powers of attorney, and health care directives (living wills) can prevent financial and emotional stress during already difficult times. Peter is committed to providing affordable estate planning for every family, including yours.

A Northwest native, Peter graduated from the University of Washington with a BS in Cell and Molecular Biology, and performed cancer research at the University of Washington prior to obtaining his JD from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Peter is a member of the Washington State Bar Association, and the Tacoma Pierce County Bar Association, and was a past chair of the TPCBA Guardianship section.

In his spare time, Peter is an avid car enthusiast, a shade-tree oenophile (wine lover), and loves to read. But most of Peter's time is spent being the proud father of his two beautiful children!

Very helpful, considerate and generous attorney
Mr. Haroldson responded to a posted question of mine regarding a family law case Im currently involved in. His answer was genuinely thoughtful and empathetic to my situation, providing me with a solid understanding of what I could anticipate when going in front of a judge. I appreciated his reply so much that I sought out a 30min consultation with Mr. Haroldson in order to discuss more specific details regarding the best way for me to proceed in this situation. The consultation was at no cost to me which I was deeply grateful for him providing to me. During our conversation, he was upfront, honest and forward about his true thoughts with what I was going through and gave me the best he was able to within this appointment. Not only that, but he was also very generous to me in regards to his offered available services. If I decide to hire an attorney in this matter, hands down, I would contact Mr. Haroldson right away without hesitation. I feel completely confident that he would provide me with exceptional service and legal assistance. I am deeply grateful and appreciative of his time and the advice I received that day. Thank you so much.

Wonderful guardianship attorney
Mr. Haroldson was courteous and professional even when the court-appointed attorneys were not. He gave me great legal advice and stopped the litigation from snowballing out of control in my father's guardianship case. (I was the fly in the ointment who contested my criminal brother's petition for guardianship.) Mr. Haroldson came to my rescue after my first attorney withdrew and another refused to accept my case. He is honest and honorable, a precious rarity in lawyers these days.

Estate Resilution
Mr. Haroldson is a very knowledgeable and focused lawyer. He listened to what I think needed to be done and then added his thoughts from his knowledge. He did all this in a very efficient manner. This kept costs to a minimum with excellent results. My thanks to him and his firm during a very difficult time for our family.

Don't hesitate to hire Peter!
I was referred to Peter for my divorce - a complicated one given that my ex husband and I are both active duty military with a child. Peter counseled me at our first meeting- our behavior during our divorce would set the tone for the next 18 years of co-parenting. That stuck. Peter led me and advocated for me, called me out when I was being petty, and ultimately we reached an agreement that I feel is the absolute best for my son. Exhusband and I are both happy. Peter was always prompt, he was professional, easy to contact and very fair with his charges. Never felt nickel and dimed. I'm in the medical field- we become accustomed to disliking lawyers; then I found myself needing one. Peter has taught me the value of good counsel with the wonderful work he did for me. Don't hesitate; I couldn't recommend him more. I'm so glad I found him.

Guardianship Attorney
Mr. Haroldson represents me as a Certified Professional Guardian. He has done so for over 8 years. We have a great working relationship. We have worked through many challenging issues and I feel he has always had my back. He helps me advocate for my wards best interest. He is knowledgeable and advises me well. He is well versed in the area of Guardianship, but it also is an ever changing area of law and we continue to learn something new with every case. I feel we are a team and look forward to many more years of working with him.

Fantastic Attorney, The Best Hands Down
I hired Peter in 2009 for my divorce and custody. I fought him on everything because I wanted to be nice. He ALWAYS listened to what I had to say and did EXACTLY as I asked even if he didn't agree with it. He is very knowledgeable in his field, is very respected by his peers and judges alike. He is great at explaining everything in detail and works very hard to meet clients goals and expectations. Because of his hard work and complete dedication, my family is seeking to retain him again in a current matter as the current attorney is doing absolutely nothing, and will continue to seek his services for anything in the future!

Very Professional
Thoughtout the entire time of the most difficult situation I have yet to have in my life, Peter always remained professional at every turn of events. I was on a rollercoaster ride in which it seemed as though I had NO control over and Peter did an excellent job in smoothing my journey. My wife had what I call a "shark" for an attorney and I said just that to Peter and told him I wanted to have a shark as well. His reply is exactly why I hired him, "If you have 2 Sharks in a tank you will have blood everywhere. You need a Fisherman to catch a Shark." He has an amazing way of wording things for any situation to help your case and he uses his vocabulary to help your struggle that you are in. Divorce is not an easy thing for any one to go through and it won't be for you. Peter helped me see things in a manner I didn't understand or realize, making things calmer for me. Which was absolutely what I needed because of my Children and what they needed and wanted from me as a father. I'll never be able to thank Peter enough for that. Being Active Duty military there were things that become so complex for me and Peter explained it all to me before hand so I wouldn't be unaware when those things came up, and they did, so it better prepared me for what will be happening during my divorce. Peter will work with you and for you regardless of the hour of the day when needed and more importantly he will take the time you deserve to just talk with you (he even stopped the "clock" with me a few times as we talked about other things) and that shows he actually cares and understands what your going through. Peter keeps your feet on the ground and knows a divorce is hard and let's you know that. He keeps your children and their best interest in mind always. I stated to him I will give all I have for my children and their best interest regardless of cost. His reply let me know he has my children at the top of his mind saying "if you do that then what about their College funds, etc." and showed it by getting my children the fair time they deserve with their father. "Thank you Peter" I highly recommend Peter and if you read this please know that I mean this fully. As a Soldier, Man, Parent and Father he will do what is right by you and your children. Peters morales and ethics are without question. Call him or even go sit and speak with him to see for yourself before going forward without help during a difficult time in your life. If you have a daughter Peter will even order some Girl Scout cookies from her to show you he gets it because he's not only a Family Law Attorney but he is also a Man, Parent and a loving Father to his children. "I give you my best if your going through a divorce and please don't go at it alone if you don't have to, call him today and let him do what he is good at for your benefit." -Sean

Competent but lacking attorney
I hired Peter to assist me with my divorce. A decision I have regretted since. To be fair, he is a knowledgeable attorney, but he lacks wittiness and passion before a judge. During my temporary order brief, he failed to disclose information to reduce support. I had to speak up for myself to get a better ruling. Peter also has a habit of stating he is not going to do something, not because its unethical but because he does not want to. That was one of the main reasons I terminated our lawyer client relationship. I could write a book on why not to hire Mr. Haroldson, but I will end this review with one telling statement. If you want a lawyer who will settle and not fight for you. Peter is your man. If you want a bull dog, please look elsewhere.

Response from Peter Haroldson March 2, 2016
I am sorry to hear that one of my clients felt that my performance didn't meet their expectations. I am prohibited by the Rules of Professional Conduct from revealing client confidences, which makes it difficult to meaningfully respond to the allegations stated, and I will always err on the side of protecting my client. I take pride in working very hard each and every day in court and out of court on behalf of my clients. I encourage any client, past, present, or future, to contact me with any concerns so that I can help make it right.

Very unhappy
I also had an ugly divorce. He was mentally verbally financially controlling and abusive. I feel that Peter also did not believe me. It shocks me in this day and age that people still believe the abuser (man) and not the abused one (woman) It's so disturbing, sexist, and shocking. Peter didn't want to hear about it. He said he didn't have to believe me to be my lawyer. I said it was important that my lawyer believed me. To me! Then with a few days warning and 2 days before I had surgery he left the practice and dropped me after $17,000.00 of my money and he didn't fight for me , believe me, in fact I felt victimized again. I have almost no money left. Had to find and retain another lawyer. I feel like I was robbed ! Extremely unhappy with his lack of sympathy/ empathy and like I was just a pain in his neck that he couldn't wait to get rid of and move on. He was even referred to me by a family member of his!! I spoke to the Alliance group practice explaining that I was broke now, no further on than I was a year ago?? They should re imburse me some of the money. But I have not heard anything from them!! I would NEVER go there again!!

Move on
I had a very contentious divorce. I'd never been through something that ugly or hurtful ever. My x-wife made horrendous lies and basically didn't care if I lived in a cardboard box with our kids. Pete could've cared less. He believed her lies and I had to prove I was innocent in each lie. He didn't fight for me and gave me the advice "if you can't agree, then the judge will decide." Although true, I needed a lawyer telling me that $ 4000/mo, (her lawyer was asking for) was too much. Especially since I had 50% custody. My financial life has been demolished thanks to poor representation. Other attorneys I'm looking at hiring to modify this ridiculous situation cannot believe what happened. Divorce is truly a life changing event and having good representation can save you happiness and health. I wouldn't ever hire Pete again.

Response from Peter Haroldson February 8, 2017
I am sorry that this person had a bad experience and I am especially concerned that he thinks I didn't care about him or his situation. I welcome and request that he call me and I invite him for a no-charge consultation to discuss this matter and see what I can do to make things right. If he wants to use another attorney, I would be willing to discuss the matter with this person's future attorney, with his permission, if it would be helpful. Generally, it is always difficult in contentious divorce cases when parties make accusations against one another which the other side doesn't feel are truthful or justified. In cases where allegations are "he-said she-said", additional proof is the best way to show the other side is lying, that you are telling the truth, or both. I can see how talking about this might have been misinterpreted as me believing what the other party said, and that would be frustrating for a client to hear. I am committed to client satisfaction and I will use this experience to improve the way I practice law. Sincerely, Peter Haroldson
