I am a dual U.S. / E.U. (Germany) citizen and I am about to travel to Germany in a few days. A relative of mine in Germany threatened to file an inheritance claim against me and seize/freeze my financial assets the moment I set foot in Germany. I wasn’t sure if this legal threat would be carried out ...but I wanted to have a clear understanding of German law before my trip so that I could travel with peace of mind. My German father recently died and I, as someone who has lived in the US for 35 years, was at a loss on what to do as the heir to his small estate. Beibehaltungsgenehmigung. That's the word that kept popping into my head. Should I have applied for one of those a long time ago? Is it too late? That nagging feeling kept coming up. He answered my questions. All of them. On the spot. And yes, he did stop my worries.
