I hired Sam to represent me in my divorce. I was the plaintiff. After two years and $20k +, I fired him. Sam let the defendent miss deadline after deadline, never pushed to settle, and let defending counsel walk all over him. After two years, I was no further ahead than when I began. He let oppo...sing counsel cancel and reschedule my deposition FIVE times over eight months. He didn't know the judge we were assigned, could offer no real insight into opposing counsel, and never offered clear advice. I regularly received documents from him, in the mail, AFTER the dates they referenced. Sam had no paralegals (he works entirely solo as a side hustle to his day job). Nonetheless, he charged me full attorney rates for paralegal work. He has no modern technology (all documents were exchanged via USPS. Every single thing. He could not accept documents via Dropbox, for example). The only thing I have to show for two years service is a bulging notebook of paperwork. Utterly a waste of my time and money. The attorney I hired in his place has already made huge progress on my case, and most of her billing is at her paralegal rate.
