Chance Xcaliber Oberstein

I hired Chance for my son’s probation violation and he successfully saved him and got him home again. I have never met an attorney who is more caring, compassionate, and diligent as Chance. He always had time to speak to us, and explained everything so we all could understand. He was not timid about... telling my son he had to take responsibility and he alone could change his life. My son is like a new person now. Chance also spends much of his free time trying to change punishments and laws for those convicted of sex offenses. Having a sex offense already has you pinned behind a rock and hard place. I had tried to reduce my charge to a misdemeanor with a different lawyer many years ago, but probation and the DA did not merit it. I was lost until I was referred to Mr. Oberstein. Mr. Oberstein was very sympathetic with ...my plight and took on my case despite the uphill battle that lay before us. He was very up front and laid out all the possibilities, including not getting the decision that we both would like. It took a lot of planning and patience to prepare for my case. Mr. Oberstein was able to provide a plethora of legal statutory support for all what the court would have thrown out or not acknowledge and he did it with a calm decorum during the court session. That display reminded me of a cliche, "A good attorney knows the law; a great attorney knows the judge." I am afraid of being at court, but Mr. Oberstein kept me afloat. Mr. Oberstein reminded me of what was laid out and how the chances have improved since the first time I tried, but also reminded me there is no guarantee. In the end, the judge reduced my charge to a misdemeanor. I was and am still in shock at the decision because the success rate for my type of case is not great. There is so much gratitude that I owe to Mr. Oberstein and his tactful planning. Although reducing a charge to a misdemeanor is a small hill to many, to a person with a post-conviction sex crime, this is a significant mountain to overcome. It signifies that the State of California believes in your efforts of rehabilitation to grant the reduction. Mr. Oberstein has given me a strong foundation for the next step in my post-conviction strive to regain my life and I thank God for blessing me with Mr. Oberstein's help.

Genuinely Grateful! When I met Chance some years back. I was on parole looking at 20 years (yikes). I set up a consultation with Mr. Oberstein. Where he was able to break down the law to me. I thought for sure I was NEVER getting off. It felt like I was being set up for failure. Any number of thin...gs could happen in 20 years. Especially if a parole agent doesn’t like you. Needless to say they were shocked that I knew such information. Things started turning around 4 months later for me. First 20 years turned to 10 years. Then 10 years turned to 3 years. Next thing I knew I was off parole. All it took was one encounter at an ACSOL meeting with Mr.Oberstein and my life changed for the better. No more ankle monitors. No more parole. I’m thankful for the way Chance navigated me through the last two years of my 3 year parole. If Not for Chance’s help. I’d still be on parole today.

I lucked out and found Chance through the ACSOL website. I was looking for an expungement and reduction to misdemeanor after completing my probation. Every lawyer I talked to said that because the laws had changed since my conviction, I would have to see an appellate lawyer to get my rights restore...d to be eligible for what I wanted to do and wouldn't take my case until that had been accomplished. When I contacted ACSOL to see about this change in law, I was advised to contact Chance and explain my case to him. BEST DECISION EVER! It was immediately obvious that Chance knew the law pertaining to my conviction better than any of the lawyers from my local area. He immediately explained how he could approach my request and it made perfect sense to me. In court, the judge's first inclination was to deny my request for expungement because my conviction wasn't eligible for one. He calmly and eloquently argued the merits of my case citing case law favoring my position and I walked out of court that day with an expunged record! Our next move is to go back into court for a reduction of my felony wobbler to a misdemeanor which would make me eligible for tier 1 status when the new registry takes effect in 2021. Fingers crossed. I wish that I had know about Chance when I was first arrested, the outcome might have been different.
