Our practice takes family law cases, including surrogacy, dissolutions, parentage, prenuptial agreements, cohabitation agreements, domestic violence, and guardianship cases in Ventura County and Chatsworth.

Admitted to the California Bar in December 1996, I started as a solo practitioner in Westlake Village. Later, I began enjoying work on key areas of dissolution, custody, parentage plus cohabitation issues, prenuptial contracts, surrogacy, adoptions and division of retirement plans. I moved to the office I have now in Thousand Oaks (Newbury Park) in 2005.

I was raised by divorced parents and have been my own client in a divorce case. I realize why clients become depressed and arrive at the court with devotional books and best friends. I share my children with my former wife on a weekly rotational basis.

Fighting in court (litigation) is not necessary, although I do litigation (this is often unavoidable, especially in custody cases). Lawyers are also able to provide 'limited scope' services.  In recent years I have built a considerable practice doing mediation and keeping clients out of the courthouse.

New clients are entitled to a free initial consultation. We accept credit cards. Virtually every family lawyer asks for an advance payment, commonly (and incorrectly) called a 'retainer.' I like, virtually all family lawyers charge hourly, although, on rare occasions, I have charged a flat rate for a case. My hourly rate is $300.

Fearless and Does an Excellent Job - Highly Recommend
This review is highly overdue. In 2011, Tristan agreed to represent me in my divorce, when other Ventura County attorneys shied away because of who my husband was. Tristan didn’t charge me an arm and a leg. He got me an excellent order for spousal support which enabled me to pay for attorney fees, and he represented me for around 19 months until my divorce was finalized. Tristan is known and respected in the Ventura County Superior Courthouse. It is now 2023. Because Tristan secured my portion of pensions (and I am now collecting Social Security) I can actually pay for my living expenses. Not everyone can say that at retirement age. Thank you, Tristan! Thank you for looking after matters and getting me through my divorce, so that I can be where I am today. I would highly recommend you to anyone in their search for an attorney!

Tristan teGroen is a fabulous, extraordinarily experienced, ethical, well-respected, meticulous, quick, wicked-smart, Mensa-type, 100% on-top-of-it lawyer and as a bonus, a wonderfully clever, creative, compassionate and honestly most caring individual I have ever met. He goes over and beyond to take care of your case - frequently working the weekend/late nights to keep a hot issue at bay. If you are FORTUNATE enough to have Tristan in your corner - which is most likely a truly difficult time in your life - you are VERY lucky. An unexpected divorce or legal matter can be an emotional and financial train-wreck, and could change/will change your life. Having Tristan in my corner gave me the ability and strength to forge my way though this dark forest - truly territory uncharted. My case was very simple, and a matter of writing a settlement - until - it was not, when my X hired a "Ready for Trial" go-for-broke aggressive lawyer. Tristan approached this aggressive adversarial attitude with a smart, meticulous, professional, monk-like calmness and a "We-got-this-don't-worry" strength with his ever cool head. To someone like myself, who is not familiar with the legal system/processes, these things are unbelieveably frightening, shocking, scary and soul-devastating. This is a time to hire someone you fully trust - your future life counts on it. Tristan will have your back and keep the emotions and interactions calm and cool despite the heat he is dealt (extraordinarily rude and unnecessary aggressive assaults/demands from opposing counsel) - which ultimately creates a better outcome. A real gem, a diamond under pressure, I cannot recommend Tristan enough.

Tristan teGroen has been my attorney for over ten years. In my experience he has been professional, thorough, thoughtful, methodical and kind. Highly Recommended
I have spoken to many lawyers throughout my custody case, and even hired/fired several for incompetency. I had a consultation with Tristan and would hire him should I need to in the future, as I am now in the tail end of my case after the judgement has already been ruled on. He was very patient, knowledgeable of the questions I posed and didn't play games dodging answers just because he's not hired as some lawyers I've experienced do. Effeciency with morals
Unfortunately Tristan was not my first family law attorney. I wished he was. He is knowledgeable, fair and reasonably priced. His primary focus is doing the right thing. One of the few attorneys I have met that has morals and standards.

Excellent Attorney!
As a retired attorney myself, I think I know a good lawyer when I work with one. Tristan is an outstanding lawyer. He not only knows the law and the court system, but he also understands people and takes his clients' best interests to heart. He is trustworthy, honest, hard working, and insightful. I just found this website after referring Tristan Tegroen to a friend. I initially went online to look up Tegroen's address and phone number, but would like to leave a review here on behalf of a great attorney as a way to thank him for everything he's done so far. Before I hired Tristan Tegroen, I had gone to another attorney for consultation with about 30 years of experience but was put off by the visit. Something just didn't feel right there. The attorney I intitially contacted seemed too cut-throat, with priorities that were not quite humane to the nature of the case. I was then referred to Tristan Tegroen eight years ago by a neighbor, and Tegroen has handled my custody and support case ever since. I've come to understand that his approach to custody matters is realistic and trustworthy. In the recent past I have referred him to several friends. One of them, Tammy, however actually found Tristan Tegroen through the court system for pro bono representation, yet at the time I didn't know we had the same attorney. Tammy told me one day that she was going to try to fight for more custody of her two daughters. She's had various issues of her own but they were not doing so well with the arrangement at the time. When I asked Tammy if she had an attorney, and what she was told, she said 'yes', and that he had told her 'Ok, let's try it..Let's shoot for the moon.' She went in to court with a really complicated case and came out with more than anticipated. My case was not a divorce case, however as I had said, Tristan Tegroen is trustworthy as well as thourough. He has been my attorney for the duration of my case and I am hoping to keep it that way.
