John S. West is a partner at Allred, Maroko & Goldberg.
He graduated from Loyola Law School in 1981. He specializes in employment litigation and employee claims negotiations. His clients include highly compensated senior executives.
Mr. West has also represented individuals in many noteworthy business, tort, civil rights, and appellate cases. For example, he represented a child injured when baseball star Vince Coleman detonated an explosive device in a stadium parking lot. He also represented a video photographer attacked by rock musician Tommy Lee.
In another highly publicized case, Mr. West represented a female client who, during infertility treatments, had her eggs stolen, fertilized, and implanted into another woman. He also represented a young woman who was the victim of a conspiracy by a number of priests, enticing her to engage in sexual intercourse (see Rita M. v. Roman Catholic Archbishop, 187 1453, 232 . 685 (1987).
Mr. West won a leading case decided under the Unruh Civil Rights act, Engel v. Worthington, 60 628, 70 526 (1997). In that case, a publisher refused to print a photograph of a man and his male partner in a high school reunion yearbook. Mr. West successfully appealed the case from three separate decisions over a ten-year period. (See also, Engel v. Worthington, 23 329 1994.)
Over the years, Mr. West has also litigated many business disputes and matters involving injunctive relief. Acting on behalf of the Women's Equal Rights Legal Defense and Education Fund, Mr. West co-wrote an amicus curiae ('friend of the court') brief that was accepted by the United States Court of Appeal in the case brought by Paula Jones against President Clinton.
He recently obtained a federal appellate reversal from the Second Circuit (New York) for a client in a case involving a conflict of laws between the states of New York and California (see Cap Genimi v. Nackel, 346 F 3d 360 (2nd Cir. 2003).
In 2000 Mr. West and his partner, Nathan Goldberg, won a $1 million dollar jury verdict in an age discrimination case. The Court also awarded $550,000 in attorneys fees in that matter.
Mr. West is the author of a number of published articles on employment law, including articles on the circumstances under which partners are covered by employee anti-discrimination statutes, conditions for triggering "hostile environment" prohibitions of Federal law, and trends in holding employers responsible for sexual misconduct of employees under tort law principles.
Mr. West's professional activities include serving as a member of the Executive Committee of the Labor and Employment section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association. He frequently speaks on employment law for attorney and business groups. Mr. West also serves as a court-appointed arbitrator in civil disputes.
