FAMILY FIRST | FAMILY LAW

I am a partner attorney at Randle Palmer & Bernays, PLLC, where I practice in the areas of family, juvenile, and adoption law.

I attended the University of Arizona's James E. Rogers College of Law, where I served as a Note Editor for Arizona Law Review (see We've Still Got Feelings: Re-Presenting Pets as Sentient Property, Note, 60 Ariz. L. Rev. 485 (2018)), as Vice Chief Justice of the ASUA Supreme Court, and as President of Pride Law. While at school, I participated as a Rule 38(d)-certified limited-practice student for the Child & Family Law Clinic, through which I acted as an attorney or guardian ad litem for children in juvenile-dependency cases. In addition, I also helped to run a biannual name-change clinic for transgender and gender nonconforming clients and worked as a summer intern at the Pima County Public Defender's Office.

Although I grew up in a southeastern suburb of Phoenix, I prefer to consider myself a native of Tucson, where I have lived since the beginning of my adulthood, where I met and married my wife, and where I have made my home. I have a past full of eclectic experiences, which I believe serve me well in approaching my legal cases with knowledge, empathy, and creativity.

Always went above and beyond
From day one I always felt comfortable with Kayla. Prior to Kayla I had 2 other attorneys (My original divorce attorney and a child support matter) When I went to Kayla our situation was more complicated. I wish I would have found her a lot sooner. She always responded to questions either by email or a phone call in a timely manner. I never felt like any question was a dumb question. I really felt she went above and beyond. I even had an urgent matter come up on a weekend and she called me on a Sunday after reading my email. She had paperwork ready for an emergency hearing the next day. I recommend Kayla and her firm to anyone who asks. Great service every time.

Professonal and compassionate
When our son decided to give up his 2 boys my wife and I contacted Attorney Bernays for advice. Our first choice was adoption. Kayla asked the right questions and uncovered that the boys were part Native American and told us of a law that gives the tribe first right to the boys. Kayla said that this could take many months to years before a decision came down and we still could lose our grandkids to the tribe. She suggested another option, Guardianship. We did not have to involve the tribal council and the whole process would be much less lengthy. My wife and I proceeded on this course with the assurance from Kayla that this would be a better option. Within 5 months we had full Guardianship of the boys and child support from their father. Every meeting we had to discuss the case, Kayla was always concerned with how the boys were taking this change and made every effort to make it as smooth as possible. I cannot express well enough how comfortable Kayla made us feel during court appearances as this was all new to my wife and me. Kayla comes with our highest recomendation for first, her professionalism and second, her compassion for our family in this case. Thanks a million Kayla.

Amazing!
Kayla is an AMAZING lawyer! She's personable and pleasant. Her disposition is warm, kind, charitable, and inviting. She put me immediately at ease. Considering the sensitive nature of our business dealings, her professional attitude, and demeanor inspired a sense of confidence. She was a "True North" when I felt overwhelmed and lost in the chaos, that comes with divorce. She is extremely knowledgable concerning the detailed inner workings of the legal system, and associated proceedings. She helped me achieve a fair and equitable settlement. She's level-headed and poised under pressure.

Truly invested and dedicated Attorney
Kayla represented me in a complicated matter in juvenile superior court here in Pima county. We went to trial 7 days throughout a month's time. Trial in civil court based on criminal allegations was probably the most far fetched attempt I could have imagined to bring justice and security to my child and to ask my counsel and my child's counsel to advocate under such duress was absolutely gut wrenching. I felt confident from day one however, we had a plethora of credible witnesses and a child's testimony and disclosure, a team of lawyers who communicated amazingly, a very aggressive Kayla B, but that wasn't going to be enough. We had a judge who listened, who took a copious amount of notes and after 7 days and 1 month in court and a 30 day deliberation, we all saw that there is an honor system in place and we won! Kayla's closing statement calmed my anxiety once and for all, she remembered every word spoken throughout, she kept a detailed script throughout, she paid attention and she represented me to the fullest. I am eternally grateful. And I have retained her once more to finalize some things that are necessary at this point, now that we can move on with life and a child has been saved.

Deceptive marketing
I would describe Kayla as an easy-going and relatable individual. My child's mother filed a petition for complete control. Kayla explained to me that Arizona law presently wants both parents to share time and responsibility for decision making 50/50 by default, and that the only circumstances that would constitute a change to the forementioned plan involve one parent being proven to pose a danger to the child. This is precisely what the opposing party attempted to do, and at the expense of truth they did a great job. Kayla took my case and after a year of back and forth including three trial dates the judge returned permanent orders. Though I find Kayla professionally competent, I felt deceived by the way I was billed. Kayla marketed herself at a discount rate. While the industry standard seems to be $350/hr. Kayla advertised a rate of $200/hr. I thought fortune had smiled on me until I began receiving bills for service. I do not know how other family legal professionals bill but I found certain charges to be rather frustrating. Among them included routine charges to respond to an email (as much as .8hr. each) even though I sent an average of fewer than 1/mo. Kayla had mentioned that she would charge for transit time to/from court which is certainly understandable. I did not know however that I would be charged for more than two hours "preparation for trial" per court appearance. Particularly confusing given that I found her rather unprepared...(didn't touch on any evidence that we had entered durring her cross-examination, began drafting closing arguments during trial etc...)

Family Attorney | Mar 12
Relationship: Opposing Counsel on matter
"In an area of law where tension is primed like a powder keg, it is refreshing to come across another attorney that recognizes that the client's interest is not served by stoking the flames. Professional respect is an apt description, whether its in negotiations or at a hearing. Don't be fooled, though. Kayla's willingness to find the agreement where it can be found is borne out of a desire to get the best outcome, not out of a fear of litigating where she comes prepared with the right evidence and compelling arguments."
