110% Satisfied Client

Emily Smoak and her team were there for us when we needed her most. She was able to represent our family's best interest and negotiated a settlement that was far better than originally proposed. Regular communication and consultations were very much appreciated. Working with her calmed our fears duri...ng a most difficult time.

Good Attorney

As hard as divorce is Emily was always there to answer my questions and a pleasure to work with . She was always available to answer my questions quickly and competently. I would highly recommend her to assist you in a most unpleasant legal matter. What I found is that you need someone that you can c...ommunicate with clearly and that listens to your needs. Emily did both 100% for me.

She could have been worse

If you're at the beginning of your divorce process you're probably a little scared and looking for someone who can give you advice and who you can trust. At first Emily seemed like she was exactly that and during my free consultation with her she came across as someone who would fight for me and prot...ect me. I hired her thinking she was a high powered attorney that would get the job done, but in the end all she ended up being for me was a high priced attorney who cared more about getting paid than protecting my best interests. With only an 18 month marriage and a full pre-nup in place I should have had a slam dunk case, but Emily consistently dropped the ball and got caught off guard by my ex-wife's pro-bono freshman lawyer's antics and it cost me dearly. Emily's response to me everytime I'd get screwed was "well it could be worse" and she'd quote some other case she was working on that was a lot costlier. I never felt like she was in control or knew what she was doing, her communication was spotty, and she was constantly charging me to fix her blunders. Ultimately I felt like she didn't really care about me as a client and had more important things to worry about. With that said, I gave her a couple of stars because I guess she could have been worse.

To anyone reading this comment, I want to add some context to Ryan's complaints. I sat with and advocated for Ryan for 11 hours during his divorce mediation. He left mediation fully satisfied with the signed settlement agreement we reached on his behalf. The Divorce was entered April 27, 2021. Ryan failed to timely pay his financial obligatons as he had agreed to do and as he was ordered to do in the Decree of Divorce. Months later, on June 21, 2021, opposing counsel filed an action to collect the monies that Ryan should have paid. Although my office offered to help Ryan with the civil action for failure to pay, Ryan refused our help. Ryan then posted this negative review at the end of August 2021. I hope you find this helpful. Best, Emily

Do not hire!

Absolutely horrible to work with! I wouldn't recommend her to anyone! Charged me $10,000 for a simple fill in the blank protective order document that was only supposed to take just a couple hours to fill out. She filed this document with false information despite me asking her to fix the mistakes.... She was belittling and bullying to me throughout the couple weeks I tried to use her. It was so bad that I told her that I was thinking of using someone else for my divorce, and she got upset and dropped me for the protective order case which I had a hearing for just a couple weeks later. I had to quickly try to scramble to find a new lawyer and ultimately lost my protective order after having to spend even more money to try to get a new lawyer up to speed and to try to fix her many mistakes. Absolutely a nightmare of an experience! Do NOT use her!

This client came to me after firing one attorney. This was a highly contentious matter. The husband had gotten a temporary protective order and had filed for divorce. She fired her first attorney for not obtaining a protective order using scaldalous information that was not relevant. She was the same with me. It became clear that she wanted to use the protective order process along with salaciaous and unfounded claims to deport her husband. We did succeed in getting her a temporary protective order based upon actual facts. At that point, she grew even more angry because the order was not based on her unfounded allegations. At that point, I could no longer work with her so I withdrew. Yours, Emily

Relationship: Fellow lawyer in community

"As a colleague, I would say that Emily's distinctive feature is that she is very easy to work with. This character trait is essential to being able to settle a case with an opposing counsel generally. In the practice area of family law -- where emotions run high and opposing counsel are ofttimes difficult -- I find Emily's approach to be a breath of fresh air. For that reason alone I think she is an impressive family law practitioner. I have also discussed various cases, colleagues, and court staff with Emily on occasion, and Emily appears to be well versed in family law practice and procedure. Emily is a wonderfully supportive colleague."

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
